Great stay-friendly staff & great location. Comfy bedding and room. Complimentary breakfast was so-so.

Friendly staff and comfortable rooms right in the middle of town. A good stay.

Loved this hotel. Very clean, comfortable, great location. Loved La Jolla. Convenient to shopping, freeway, the cove. Want to come back for more. Restaurant was 1st class too.

We arrived on a Saturday evening for a one night stay with no valet outside and nowhere to pull up. Upon hopping out we were advised we could have valet meet us for $18 or find our own parking two blocks away. Inside, we were given the first room on the first floor next to the restaurant/bar advertising live music. There was also a wedding party sitting in the front area, upon expressing our desire to have a room in a quieter location we were ignored and told it wouldn't be loud when they moved onto their next venue. I assure to not take a room on the first floor. when we asked advice on where to dine the staff had zero recommendations and actually stated, "I don't know Im out of La Jolla at 7pm everyday." Ok, what?! If you can do nothing else, spit out the name of one restaurant! overall, a disappointing experience.. and if you're lucky enough to get a spacious handicap accessible room try not to end up with a spinal cord injury from the flood that results in your uneven bathroom floor. Dangerous and a shame.

Very clean & newly updated bathrooms & a wonderful continental breakfast is complimentary each morning! The location is in the heart of La Jolla and off street parking can be found two blocks away to save yourself the valet charge!

Feels a little tired. Didn't have hair conditioner in the bathroom. Breakfast is terrific. People there very nice. Didn't feel it was the best value but we were comfortable and safe.

Centrally located, very clean. My only criticism would be there was strong food odors coming from the restaurants. If you like sautéed garlic your in luck.

We have stayed many times at this hotel. However we have never had a room above the restaurant. Because it was New Years Eve and very busy we had the smells from the kitchen permeating our room. It was overwhelming. The dinners went on until midnight so the smell never went away. We were on the third floor but still it was very bad. Recommend asking for rooms in the even numbers to avoid this. We will stay there again just not in the rooms that end in 07!

This is probably the cleanest hotel I've ever stayed in. Although I was given a first floor room with a window to the street, there was no problem with light or noise. The desk staff were very accommodating and friendly. The breakfast was deluxe (croissants, hard boiled eggs, cold cuts, breads, yogurt, fresh fruit, waffles!). The in-room coffee was fantastic, the room included a microwave and refrigerator to store leftovers from the delicious surrounding restaurants. The bed was very comfortable and the room was super clean. Toiletries were also quite nice (peachy-papaya and organic, paraben-free). Free wireless internet, too! I would definitely stay again.

Do not accept this room as it is right above the restaurant. I was half sick after an evening in this room. Also, the noise of wine bottles being dumped in the dumpster and a roaring engine at 1:30 a.m. after the bar closed was rather disturbing. I'm looking for a different property to stay in while in La Jolla.

Very nice hotel. Friendly staff. Convenient to dining and shopping. Restaurant in the hotel was OUTSTANDING! Service was excellent, elegant and friendly. Food was amazing. Definately a nice place for a celebration, so we will be back. "Breakfast" left a lot to be desired, the only negative comment we could make.

from the minute we walked in they made us feel comfortable and welcome.Great stay.

The Hotel is situated just 10 miles from Seaworld. The surrounding area is beautiful. All variety of food options are available within radius of 0.2 mile. Only parking was a bit issue as you need to use either street parking or go for the Hotel Vallet Parking.

The hotel is a little worn when you get off the main floor, but the rooms are comfortable (especially the beds!) and the windows actually open. Always nice when you're near the beach, even if your room overlooks the roof and alley! Walking distance to everything, and can't beat the price for such a great location and a comfy bed. Friendly service, easy check in, easy check out.

The Staff was AMAZING! They were their at the door when I came in and when I checked in I felt like they were interested in me and where I was from and they just seemed very sincere. The location was great too!

Great location which is so key in a town like La Jolla! Right in the cute downtown area. Clean and upbeat! Great price and would stay again!

I have been a user of hotels.com for years and this is the FIRST negative review I am writing. When it comes to accommodations, I am very low maintenance and it takes little to make me happy. This is an unfortunate case where the Empress Hotel is either falling apart or I just happened to be visiting during the perfect storm of failure. KEYCARD MIXUP - WE WALKED IN ON OTHER GUESTS Upon our arrival, we were informed that the main computer system was down. No big deal... they just had to check us in by hand. We were assigned a room and issued a keycard. When we arrived at the designated room, the keycard unlocked the door to reveal another guest was already staying in that room. He stood there wide-eyed while we quickly backed away and apologized for the intrusion. Luckily he was too stunned to be rude or hostile. The front desk explained how he intended to assign us to the vacant room next door. Computer AND human error... *sigh* WIFI DOWN OR WEAK SIGNAL Also upon arrival, we were informed that the wireless Internet access was down with no ETA for recovery. This was more than a mild annoyance since Internet access (free or paid) is one of my very few requirements for a hotel (due to work-related obligations). I ultimately wound up having to spend part of my day at a nearby Starbucks as a result. Access was eventually restored later that night. For the rest of our stay, the speed would fluctuate. Not sure if they are using city-provided wifi or their own internal system. *sigh* UNCOMFORTABLE BED When it was time to retire that evening, we noticed the bed was a little... spring-challenged which resulted in a noticeable dip in the center. While the girlfriend and I appreciated how the bed wanted us to cuddle at night, our backs paid for it the next morning. If we had more confidence in the cleanliness of the floor, we probably would have slept on it the following night. *sigh* VENDING MACHINE PROBLEMS Speaking of the following night, we woke up rather thirsty. I

Not a Kid friendly Hotel. Music was playing all night that did not allow us to sleep. They also don't provide any secure parking; parking at all wasn't available in the hotel. Our Iron did not work. We only stayed one night. The surrounding area looked great.

a little jewel! not stuffy or too fancy but convenient, clean and well-located to shops, hospitals, beach. We loved the cool Yoga gentre across the street & 24 Hr.Fitness down the block!, even an excellant wtch repair(had I have known!) and consignment shops, restaurants, etc...as god find'

Very roomy with an abundant amount of pillows and great linen. The blackout curtains were perfect for a good night sleep. The location was very central for my choices of entertainment. Great price too, looking forward to staying again.

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel but the room was very small. There was just enough space to walk around the queen sized bed. It was tight for two adults and our luggage. But the location was absolutely great and the service very good. If you are not going to be in the room a lot or if you don't have lots of luggage you shouldn't think twice about whether to stay here; you wil be very satisfied.

The highs include location location location. Free wifi and good breakfast. Although the room was clean, it seems quite old. The couch could have been something you would find in a garage sale. Bottom line is that this hotel needs to be modernized from the 70s. The staff were well trained and quite helpful.

Great location a short walk from shops and dinning on Prospect/ beach. Staff is friendly, laid back but responsive. Comp waffle bar for breakfast is a plus. Valet parking is steep $, but on par with the area. Good value. Would stay again.

The staff was great. Helpful and friendly. Beautiful hotel and convenient for walking ot the downtown area of La Jolla. Will definitely stay there again.

I initially had rated the place 5's across the board. That has a lot to do with the fact that front desk staff of Jason and Brett(?) were great. They immediately welcomed us, informed me of the parking situation around the hotel and even offered to park the car in a suitable area. That's enough to make me overlook the fact that the hotel isn't perfect, but is very well maintained and has been renovated in areas that count. For instance our room was basic for this hotel, but it featured a newly remodeled bathroom with appointments on par with fine hotels. The room while a bit small, was very comfortable with enough room for all of our belongings and then some. The surrounding area is what you're there for and this hotel puts you within walking distance to anything in La Jolla. We can't say enough nice things about the place and their staff. We really enjoyed our stay and wished that we could have had the same experience in each of our stops along the PCH. Given the chance we would stay here again and invite you or any of our friends visiting La Jolla to do the same.

Our king room was spacious, bed very comfortable.The location of hotel was close (few minutes walk) to all La Jolla shops, restaurants and the beach. The complimentary self serve breakfast was great - lovely pastries, cereal, fruit, coffees and delicious waffles.

Very helpful staff--excellent.

When I arrived, no one was at the front desk. Finally a gal appeared from a backroom after she heard me talking to another guest. Aside from someone smoking on the designated "non-smoking floor" and the rooms could use an update the accomodations were good and the staff was efficient. Breakfast was basic but sufficient. Fresh cookies in the lobby for guests. The location is near the beach and many restaurants. FYI- whether they be visitors or locals were not friendly and do not yield to the pedestrian "right of way."

It was fine, nothinng wrong, nothing great. Bed was a little too firm for me, but OK for my husband. No one there to take our car and the street was packed, so we carried all of our luggage down the block - we had a lot.
