Hotel was very nice, the only thing I wasn't pleased with was when I booked this hotel it stated it had a restaurant, however when we arrived the hotel restaurant was under construction. I was a little disappointed that it was not mentioned when I was booking this hotel.

We stayed here while my daughter was auditioning and touring Columbia College and I can't say enough good things! The Staff was EXCEPTIONAL... Nothing else to say but "wow" they treated us golden, very pleasant, and not just helpful but eager to help and please... We will definitely be staying here for future trips to Chicago. The restaurant was closed for repairs, next time we will try that also!

The hotel was in a great location. My husband and I went to the aquarium and only walked less than a mile. Bus stop and Metra close to hotel too. Hotel was comfortable but my only complain was the shower that was a bit dirty. Overall very satisfied with hotel. We are planning another visit soon and will be staying at the same hotel again.

The Essex Inn was in the prefect location! Close to Soldier Field, Museums, and night-life. The hotel is older, so keep that in mind, but for the price and location it was perfect for me!

The only bad thing was that we had planned on grabbing a quick bite in the hotel resturant but we were not informed that it was closed for renovations. All in all it was a nice hotel for the location and the price. Our intention was to go to the aquarium and it was great for that purpose. We made a 10 minute walk through the park and we were standing on the front steps of the aquarium. The staff were friendly and the pool actually has a deep end. The hotel had a great view of Lake Michigan. One more bad thing was, if you rely on a fan to go to sleep you may want to bring your own. The rooms heating and cooling system didn't put out the noise that you would want out of a fan.

This hotel is very noisy. We were kept up all night by people in another room or in the pool area, and when we asked the hotel staff to do something about it, nothing happened. We called the front desk multiple times but had no success. The pool was closed and the gym had very old, outdated equipment that looked nothing like the photos.

My husband and I checked into this hotel and were only in the room for a half an hour before we had to leave. This hotel is either cranking out the heat or the air conditioning. You cannot control the temperature in your own room. When we got in our room it was about 85 degrees and we could not even turn on any type of fan or cool air. We determined that we could not sleep that way. We also booked this hotel on the pics of the pool and the facility available. When we checked in at the front desk, there was a sign that stated that the pool and fitness area were closed.

THIS WAS A FAMILY GET AWAY, COULD NOT USE GYM, POOL, OR RESTURANT! VERY, VERY DISAPPOINTING NOT EVEN INFORMED ABOUT THE ISSUSES. PICTURE ON WEB ARE VERY MISLEADING.

It was a great place to stay if you are visiting the musuems in Chicago, or is you would like to be in a short walking distance to millenium park. Also, if you are looking for a hotel with a pool, which I have found hard to find in downtown Chicago. The pool is very large, and the sauna is nice too. Good place for a family stay. They also have nearby parking area's about a block away, if you want to avoid paying the expensive parking fees to park at the hotel. Overall, I was impressed. I would rather stay there, than a 5 star with nothing but expensive restaurants, and fancy ammeneties, no pool, or hot tub. Chicago gets expensive, so it's always nice to have something to do at the hotel that doesn't cost you money.

Location & maintenance not bad. The advertised pool, workout area, and restaurant were closed, however. Service ok , but light bulbs not replaced or all linens fully replaced. On the other hand, the staff was pleasant and cooperative when reminded. For the rate we paid, it was good.

The rooms are somewhat clean but they are a little tired and loud. The major issue is the tiny bathrooms. Definitely not a 3 star hotel.

Great room except the bathroom was small, but that wouldn't keep me from staying there again.

A hotel I always wanted to stay at in January. Great location and just minutes from work.

Located right across from Grant Park in downtown Chicago, helpful staff. Too bad the ground floor restaurant was closed, it looked interesting. But Yolk is right down the street and a great place for breakfast or lunch.

The location, price, and amenities make the Essex Inn a wonderful choice for the touist in Chicago. In is conveniently located near all of the attractions around Grant Park, and the hotel runs a free shuttle throughout the day to take you to the upper end of the Magnificent Mile. While you are staying at the hotel, take advantage of the indoor pool and exercise room.

The Essex was a great hotel to stay at. The people that work there are very nice and very helpful. I would recommend this hotel to everyone.

Good Clean economical hotel in the loop

Got to the hotel to find out there was a $41 parking fee. I didn't know Chicago and got there late so I just paid it. Hotels.com needs to make fees like this visible up front! The next day I found a public parking garage one block West of the hotel for half the price. Also it was $5 to use the internet for 15 min!!! I've been all over the world and never seen the internet cost that much even when I'm staying in hostels for a fraction of the price of the Essex rooms

small hotel, and bathroom was small but it was comfortable and clean. Good location, right on Michigan Avenue. There's a great place to eat breakfast 2 blocks south of the hotel.

Essex was great! It's right on Michigan Avenue and conveniently located by beautiful Chicago landmarks. The hotel provided me with a list of all nearby restaurants that included distance from hotel. This was great for me as I didn't want to travel far for dinner.

The hotel was quiet and close to everything we wanted to see and visit over Christmas weekend. The hotel was very good at giving us lists of places that would be open on Christmas Day to eat and visit. The room was on the small side but the view was nice and easy to walk down Michigan Av and the lake and Grant Park. The front desk people were very nice.

We enjoyed our stay at the Essex. The hotels room was quite small, so more than 4 people in a room would be pushing it. The room was clean and the hotel staff was friendly. The hotel provided a shuttle to local destinations, but no return service. Staff was helpful in planning return trips, though. The hotel restaurant was not in service when we stayed, but there are nice neighborhood restaurants nearbby. Starbucks, Caribou are located within a block and a Trader Joe's is located about 2 blocks away. The room had a fridge and it was great to have. We ended up packing picnic lunches for our days in the museums (no musuem had a problem allowing picnic lunches and most had a picnic lunch area.) The hotels pool was nice, though a "lifeguard" was a bit of an overstatement. Seemed more like a towel boy, than somone who was actively watching the pool.

Good swimming pool but located to far away from the downtown city scene.

Great work out facilities, pool (with lifeguard), hotel was comfortable and in a great location. Staff was very kind and accommodating. We would definitely stay here again. The hotel is very close to the Museum Campus.

We picked the Essex for their location. It was in between the Art Institute and the Museum campus. The Free Shuttle to the museums was very nice and the drivers were very friendly and helpful. We only ahd two dissappointments. One the restaurant was no longer in existence so we had to find other places for all of our meals and the shower pressure was terrible. Otherwise we had a pleasant stay.

I was looking for a budget-friendly hotel in a good location with a comfortable room which is exactly what I got. Bathroom is tiny but my room was a good size and the bed was comfortable. Next time in the City I would probably stay closer to Wacker because that is where I spent most of my time.

Great staff and friendly service but we felt a little deceived by the hotel's website and pictures. The lobby is not the best hangout spot (it's dated and smells strange) but who cares, you're in Chicago. The pool is not as impressive in person as it is in the photos and the same can be said for the rest of the hotel, rooms especially. Aside from that the location is pretty good and has beautiful views of the park. For the purpose of my trip it was great (I'm a young adult and was traveling with friends) but to a 30+ crowd or family I would recommend maybe looking around some more. I know that had I been with my parents we wouldn't have stayed.

Staff was very friendly and accomodating.. I like the diversity of the employees and the rainbow flag hung with all the nations' over the swimming pool.

I was a 10-year Chicago resident who now comes back into town several times a year. I usually stay in the Loop, but change hotels based on the offered mix of quality, location and bargain. I'd never stayed at the Essex, got the room at a fantastic rate, and figured I'd try it out. This worked well for me as a solo (business/leisure -- and to note, female) traveler. The most unappealing part was the lobby area, which definitely has an aged/retro look about it and makes you wonder what the room will be like ultimately. BUT many other bonuses more than evened this out: lovely reception service, a wonderfully updated room (business desk with free wifi, flat screen TV, halogen bed lights, upgraded bathroom) on par with the Hiltons and Sheratons of the world, frankly -- though fairly small (so not ideal for family travel). I had a corner room with a view of the Sears tower -- again lovely. Nice restaurant next door (and you're right in the heart of the southern Mich Ave. stretch -- Grant Park, Art Institute, etc.). And for those souls wishing to avoid spending $24/nt for the public lot parking or $50 for valet, this place is just south enough in the Loop that there are some meter spots; I paid $6 to cover 3 hours of the meter until 9pm, and then left by 8am when it started up again. I'd certainly return again and recommend for my similarly-situated friends.

I was visiting Chicago for three days in early December - purely for tourism: art, food and shopping. All the staff were welcoming, helpful and very friendly.It's location is perfect and in walking distance of major attractions. Also train stops are very close to the hotel. There are also excellent places to eat 5-10 minutes walk from the hotel - if you stay at this hotel you must go to Yolk (breakfast place) and Eleven Diner (corn beef on rye sandwich). The hotel is clean and the price was right. Chicago is a great city and if you are visiting I would strongly recommend this clean, friendly and excellent located hotel

Our room was super clean and very comfortable. Every person on the service staff we came into contact with was very helpful and friendly. The location was good too...not too far from Magnificent Mile, and close to many L and bus stops. I highly recommend this hotel.

The Essex appears to be newly appointed. Still some things dated, like the bathrooms, pool and workout facilities. "Hot" water wasn't as hot as I would prefer. The double room is small and the bathrooms are small but the King room is comfortable. All-in-all, the hotel is nice and the staff was very helpful. A perfect stay for those going to museums and Soldier Field. The restaurant was contemporary and had a very different flare to their cuisine.

The Essex was extremely reasonably priced and was located near McCormack Place. The rooms were clean but a little small and the hotel staff very friendly. There are a lot of great places to eat in Chicago but I am here to tell you that the restaurant and wait staff were good...really good and nicely priced.

Great location for a recent conference next door. Right on Michigan Ave. so the bus line is regular and very convenient.

Clean, reasonable and convenient. The hotel staff were helpful and friendly. Facilities include small gym and swimming pool which can get busy. Also has restaurant and bar where the meals were good. Recommend especially for location if you are going to watch a game at Soldier Field.

see note above, crazy fans everywhere. The third floor (one floor lower than mine) was the smoking floor, and all the cigarette smell and smoke was coming up. It was very uncomfortable, had to spend a lot of time at the lobby!!!!! Why pay for a room if you can't stay in it.
