great close walk to the wharf and the beach.

I really enjoyed my stay here. The room we had was clean and fresh, with a view of the pier and ocean. The room was a little small, but since my wife and I only stayed here for one night, it was perfect. The hotel location is awesome, and literally less than 100 yards from the pier and beach, maybe 250 yards to the boardwalk. I cannot wait to visit santa cruz again, and stay at this hotel during the summer months.

Hotel is priced right. Had a view of the ocean and pier. It is walking distance to pier and boardwalk and just a short drive to downtown night life. Room was clean but the tub was a little dirty. Hotel was quiet and plenty of free parking.

yes on 1 condition. I booked this room from Montana 4 my daughters honeymoon. They told my on the phone that there room would have an ocean view. Because that is they 1 thing they wanted, and it DID NOT have a clear ocean view. And they said it had a hot tub, but it was just jets in the bath tub. They came back and told me that it served the purpose but it was not what they expected.

I'm sorry but you have to tell people that you have a whirlpool tub and not a Jacuzzi. I was mislead when I booked this room because the listing said it was a king size room with a Jacuzzi. I guess their idea of a Jacuzzi is a 2 seater whirlpool bath.... in the bathroom...next to the toilet...nice!

Nice hotel for a short stay. The room we were in didn't have kitchen facilities, as such... but there was a mini fridge and kettle. Bath was spotless on arrival, and the shower head was awesome. Our had the bath/Jacuzzi/shower combo, and while we didnt actually try it out fully, it looked the part. The room itself was a pretty reasonable size - perfect for 2 people. Bed was pretty comfy, but we only had 3 pillows... seriously? There was also a nice flat screen TV with a decent array of channels I think the thing we enjoyed the most, however, was the location. It was literally a stones throw from the boardwalk and pier, but a little of the main routes, so nice and quiet at night... and we didnt have any issues leaving our car in the hotel car park. Overall, we had a great time and would highly recommend this place.

Overall the experience was great. The only thing I would suggest is they invest in some better mattresses. Both, my husband and I, tossed and turned both nights because the mattresses were extremely uncomfortable. Both of us had aching backs from two nights. It's hard to enjoy your stay when you can't sleep.

High priced for how old and small it is, BUT low priced for the location and service. Place is small and old, but decently remodeled. The location with regards to the beach and the boardwalk is great. The service is great. I was in town for a triathlon near by and the staff was very accomodating of our needs for a super late check out. If I do this race again, I will stay here again.

Room are cleaned everyday, good position, parking, internet. Don't count on breakfast, poor. SPA and pool is just a fake. I reserved an ocean view room and I got a "partial ocean view room" and very tiny for the price.

For the price the hotel suited our needs. Only discrepancy was the time of check-in. We arrived at 2:00pm since the internet said 2:00pm check-in, however the hotel desk said check-in was not till 3:00pm. Came back after 3:00 but room was not ready for another 20 minutes.

the ocean view room was really tiny..for the price its way too pricy for that size of room. the location was awesome though! For this reason i recommend staying at this hotel. The staff was pleasant as well. The continental breakfast was standard and the gentleman was very nice and made sure we had all we asked for.

Nice clean hotel. Of course a little overpriced, but thats what you can expect being so near to the boardwalk. Had a kitchen which was a surprise. Would have been cool if I needed it or was staying longer.

The hotel was an older hotel, but very clean and the grounds were kept up nicely. Their continental breakfast had a lot to be desired. We chose to eat out. It was within walking distance to the wharf and boardwalk. We had a great ocean view room. The staff was very friendly and right on top of helping us if we needed anything.

When we were leaving early (we paid for 2 nights but decided to eat the money and leave a day early), someone from the front desk called us and told us to hurry up and check out because they "needed" our room. He was pretty rude, I had never had that happen before at any hotel stay. The mattress was old and uncomfortable. Will never use a Howard Johnson again, especially in Santa Cruz.

Love the place, it is beautiful. Wish I can stay longer though.

Nice place in a great location. Not fancy but clean and in good repair. Walk to the beach, Boardwalk, Pier and Downtown....all the reasons you are in Santa Cruz.

The best part of this hotel is the location. It's a five minute walk to the pier and just a little further to the boardwalk. The rooms are small and not the best in the world, but for the price and location this hotel is awesome. I would recommend this hotel to anyone going to Santa Cruz for the boardwalk or pier, especially for families.

Management was very helpful and friendly.

Basically, for the money we paid to stay at the Howard Johnson Inn we should have paid a little more to stay some where much more comfortable. The bed was uncomforable. The bedspread, blankets, sheets were so rough and hard it made sleeping a serious challenge. The spa was only warm from the solar blankets they had on it during the night time. Breakfast might have been better but after waiting in line behind all the maids, I was annoyed. On a brighter note, we paig a fare rate. I guess the old saying is true, you get what you pay for. I will not stay at this hotel again and will not recommend it to anyone.

Our TINY room was dirty (smelled like urine) when we arrived, and when we asked to change rooms, the woman working at the front desk was very rude. In fact, she was rude every time we had to deal with her. First she told us there were no other rooms and offered no help. Only when we asked for housekeeping did a room magically become available. The second room was much better. Too bad the service was so terrible. The hotel is in a good location for enjoying the beach, but next time, we will stay somewhere else.

We normally don't even consider 2 star Hotels, but we just needed a place to stay cuz we had reservations for a tour the next day. We were IMPRESSED as far as a 2 star goes. We were able to check-in early, the Hotel is right across from the Pier and the Boardwalk. The room was clean, with a microwave and fridge. The only issue was a nice, but Sour, shower curtain which they replaced immediately. We slept with the window open, on the second floor, all night and it was extremely quiet. There was no pool, but a nice sized jacuzzi - which was a little too hot for us (106). They had a cute breakfast room (very little to choose from). Overall, for a one night stay, I would stay here again.

The room was very small and way over-priced for what you received. You needed to move a table to turn on the heater. Barely enough room to turn around. If we had known this at the onset, we never would have reserved the room. Sometimes it is difficult to tell from a description, Howard Johnson Fisherman's Wharf. Leads one to believe that this is a nicer place. Everything about the room was out dated. Requested an additional blanket, and although received, it looked like it had been through the wringer. The only thing that would make me happy, full refund on the monies spent.

walking distance to Wharf. Management very friendly and helpful. Room was updated and clean. Too close to very scary area especially at night (many young people strung out on alcohol and drugs)

nice hotel - clean, nice view, good beds, good location - close to wharf and West Cliff walking path. It is not fancy, but for the price, it was a good deal, esp. compared to the cost of other hotels in the area. Only drawback was that it was a bit noisy (street noise) and we couldn't hear the ocean (tho it is not directly on the ocean, we were hoping.) We would stay again.

Hotel was clean and comfortable. Walking distance to the beach, wharf, and boardwalk. Staff was friendly. Far enough away from strip to keep the noise down, but close enough to walk. (Older hotel, not fancy, but thought it was a good place to stay for the price)

First, it's not a hotel, it's a motel, so don't go thinking it otherwise. But the location is fabulous, a quick walk down to the beach, boardwalk and pier but up a little hill so a bit out of the fray. Our room was fine, sheets clean, towels not fancy but clean and ample supply. One tiny personal complaint was that the pillows were too plump, (not down) so bring your own if that's an issue with you too. We were surprised and delighted that we had a full kitchen with small (not mini) refrigerator, stove and oven, microwave and extra room. We hadn't booked the kitchenette so I guess we were upgraded - thank you! Also we had a little deck with an ocean view. Really, way more than I was expecting. We usually stay at 'hotels' but needed the location and I have to say we are rethinking our travel strategy. Hilton, Marriott, and the like ding us $12.95 for 24 hours of internet access on top of the pricier room rate, valet parking, and of course if there's room service, our kids want it! I don't understand the 2 stars.....it's not fancy, I agree, but for what it is, which is a good old fashioned motel, I couldn't have been happier.

The hotel was within easy walking distance of the beach and boardwalk and conveniently located relative to the downtown and university. The facility was nice enough, though for the money I did expect a bit more in the way of amenities (i.e. a more expansive breakfast, couch in the room, etc...).

The biggest downfall was the fact it was on a one way street and had to circle around each time to enter the facility. Also exiting on a cirved one way street with fast moving vehicles was tricky.

Enkelt hotrll med eldre standard, men helt ok. God beliggenhet, men fare for trafikk- og byggestøy. Ikke tenk på å betale ekstra for jacuzzi. Meget enkel frokost - men man kan kjøpe pålegg selv for å spe på...
