Hotel Carlton - بيلباو

The Carlton is a superb, last-generation luxury hotel that is perfectly maintained, with an excellent service-oriented staff. I'd stay there again. It is within easy walking distance of the Gugenheim and many other museums for which Bilbao is known

Difficult to park and communicate with door staff.

I do not consider this a 5 star hotel because I asked for several things to make it more comfortable and they were not available. Specifically, i asked for a bath mat to avoid slipping; a tea kettle so I could make tea in my room; a bathrobe to borrow, and none of them were available. The other 5 star hotels i have stayed in always had these things for me upon request.

It was excellent. The food in hotel dining room for dinner was quite good and the service was very nice. However, you could make the lighting much more appealing with softer lights and some candles.

Definitely worth the price and very central. Don't bringa car downtown though, parking is a nightmare.

it was a landmark that all should see. if u are luck enough to stay....DO IT. Clean and the most comforatable bed in spain. A Hotel that will never be forgoten.

Nicely maintained old world comfort. Staff couldn't be more pleasant.

A beautiful old building in a central square. The interior doesn't quite live up to the exterior but the room price reflects this. It's not a four star hotel though it must once have been. I stayed in a superior room which has been refurbished - probably a few years ago - in a modern, all white, sort of Austin Powers style. Lovely bathroom, spacious room. Overall, great value for money but not a top notch hotel by any stretch.

My fourth visit there and it was great as usual.

Best in Bilbao

Location was superb - bus to airport across small street - cost was less than 3 Euro for two people vs. 30 Euro cab fare. Hotel staff were helpful and knowledgeable with all questions. Would definitely stay again in the beautiful and charming city.

The Carlton is a beautiful historic hotel on an exquisite circle with a fountain, wonderful flowers and other historic building. The rates are very reasonable for old fashioned luxury.

Beautiful hotel with spacious rooms. Great location. Breakfast, while a bit pricey, was good. Our only complaints were with an intermittent humming sound throughout the night audible inside our room (#304) that distubed our sleep. Another concerned the large semi-frosted glass partition that separates the bedroom area from the bathroom. The light and noise when one person used the bathroom disturbed the other person. People that design these rooms don't use them. If they did, they would specify solid walls. Finally, the lighting in the bathroom is not adequate for women desiring to apply makeup.

Not quite up to 5* standards but a very comfortable hotel. The service could have been friendlier. Dinner was very average but they did have a function on that night.

Fantastic room with a MONSTER king-sized bed. Staff very friendly and helpful, all of them spoke English (apart from the chap in the parking garage, but the two of us managed). Parking is a bit limited and pricey. Excellent central position, 30 metres from a metro station linking you to the old town, and a 10 minute walk to the Guggenheim.

On a beautiful plaza, within walking distance of the Guggenheim and old town. Quiet, elegant turn of the century hotel.

The staff were wonderful, very helpful and cheerful. The hotel is perfectly situated. And our room was very nice. Very comfortable. Surprisingly comfortable bed. There must be amazing insulation in the widows. The room was facing the central square with traffic swirling. Yet so quiet in the room. I recommend the hotel highly.

Value for money

We stayed in a totally refurbished room, which was exactly as on the pictures. Large bedroom, fancy decor, large bathroom. However, the room was not cosy - it was very glitsy and very luxurious, but lacked coziness. The common areas of the hotel are grand, but not very new. So there is a large difference between the modern luxury of the room and the faded luxury of the common areas. Also, there was a slight problem with noise. The windows are not very tight so you hear a little street noise (not a problem, but shouldn't be like that in a 5 star hotel). Also, you can easily hear conversations in the hallway. I didn't get a chance to test the quality of hotel service, but the way we were greeted upon arrival was not adequate for a 5 star hotel. Basically, we were not greeted at all and noone helped us with the luggage.

Beautiful hotel in a great area of the city. Only a few blocks away from all of the museums. I couldn't believe the price of the hotel given how nice it was, especially compared to hotel prices and quality in the US.

I found the hotel staff quite cool and unfriendly.

We needed a one night stay prior to our flight home. The location in Bilbao was perfect to shop or walk into the historic old town.

Everything was great... Make sure to ask for street view instead of ugly courtyard view.

What excellent value -- A 5 star hotel that lives up to its name. Would recommend this hotel to everyone. Perfect location!

Superb staff (with special mention to Ivan) helped to make this a great 1st weekend to Bilbao - a city reinvented. Hotel was clean, well maintained throughout and in an excellent central position to The Guggenheim, wonderful shopping lane leading to the Old Town as well as the Tapas bars and cafes. The only suggestion would be to make sure you specify Double Or Twin beds!

The hotel is very grand and in an excellent location - between the Guggenheim and Plaza Nuevo. The front desk person was very friendly and efficient. The only downsides were the air conditioning was not working and you could smell cigarette smoke - obviously there are some smoking rooms in the hotel. However the rooms were lovely and clean and the location can't be beaten.

The hotel was super. It is located in the center of town and is only a 10 minute walk to the Guggenheim Museum. It is also surrounded by great restaurants and superb shopping. The hotel management is very welcoming. The lobby area is equally pleasant. Our room was very large and well-equiped. It is clear that our room had been recently upgraded as well as the public areas in the hotel. The Carlton Hotel was the best of hotel we stayed in during our trip to Spain.

Well situated,within walking distance of all sites,plus opposite Metro,taxi rank and buses.Hotel efficient and functional,very quick check in and out.

Great hotel to unwind and take in Guggenheim at end of 3-week trip to Spain. Stayed two nights, 10 to 15 minute walk to Casco Viejo or to Guggenheim, many cafes/bars/restaurants within walking distance, very convenient to airport bus stop (exit hotel, turn left, and cross street). Very friendly/accommodating staff, comfortable/spacious room (we were on 5th floor overlooking the Plaza Moyua--what a treat!)

We stayed for five days at the end of April and found it a convenient Hotel close to public transport. hotel staff were always helpful with any enquiries and made several phone calls on our behalf. Bedrooms and public areas were well maintained. The breakfast was very good but too expensive for our pockets, so went to nearby cafe. I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Bilbao.

The beautiful building and fantastic location of Hotel Carlton would seem to be preconditions for a fantastic stay, but unfortunately the management of the hotel seemed to take that for granted and it did not live up to expectations. Service was appalling - rude, non-communicative and unhelpful staff. When we arrived, five people were behind the reception but not one of them made a move to help us, and eventually when they had stopped passing paperwork to each other and chatting amongst themselves, they deigned to help us check in with an extremely gruff manner. Not Five Star service at all, no pride in the hotel experience they are offering. Too many corners were cut - our room was beautiful and great view of the street, but undermined by shodding cleaning including a loo that smelt like a urinal. The advertised gym was a small room packed with outdated equipment and the 'Turkish bath' is hilariously non-existent - a bare room with a radiator. The location and decaying grandeur of the hotel do give it character, and Basque hospitality overall isn't exactly renowned so I don't want to single out the Carlton - but if you can find somewhere else in beautiful Bilbao I'd recommend giving this a miss!

I stayed only one night. The location of the hotel is very convenient, at walking distance on the Guggenheim and surroundings, and just besides the entrance to the Metro and major bus lines. You can also walk to quite a few restaurants and bars. Unfortunately, the internet Wifi wasn't working, not only in the room, but in the enitre hotel. The staff wasn't very helpful and only said it was a "security scan" from a nearby company HQ, and that it was common that internet went out on their hotel. If you must have internet connectivity, either buy a prepaid data plan with a usb dongle, or go to any of the other surrounding hotels.

I personally did not enjoy my stay. I had a floor on the first floor, and it was extremeely loud. They were playing loud music nonstop from the time I checked in the early morning all the way up to 2am. I was upset because I had to be at the airport by 5:30am. In addition, I couldn't figure out how to use the shower and how to use the television. I guess I could have called to figure that out, but I just didn't feel like it. Some of the staff speak Spanish and English. Others do not understand Spanish. One person couldn't just that he didn't speak English. He just passed me off to somebody else who also couldn't speak English.
