I have tried many hotels in the area. This was my second stay at the Valencia and I will return. Better than the Grande Colonial. Very different but as good as the US Grant.

Nice and very romantic! We loved it!

I knew from reading the reviews here that the elevator might be out of service which it was. The staff was great. I need something for a headache, my husband needed more pillows, and we needed ice at all hours of the day and night, all I had to do is pick up the phone and there was a knock on the door. The food was out of this world. The view was beautiful. For those of you who smoke there is no smoking on the property so needless to say I didn’t need to use the gym, I got some great pictures, and the hubby’s wallet is lighter from the shopping.

We had an awesome time there. All people working there were super friendly and made our stay a wonderful experience. The restaurant at the terrace offers a spectacular view together with great food. The hotel manager was a very nice gentleman from Austria who seemed to care about guests and personnel.

85 year old hotel, despite undergoing a "major renovation" is showing its age. Only elevator was out of service (for weeks), plumbing old, low water pressure, problems with leaks; rooms tiny, with inadequate storage space for clothing. Staff was superb- every single one we interacted with, but that couldn't overcome structural deficiencies.

My girlfriend and I decided to pay the extra money to stay at La Valencia because of the many rave reviews. However, we were both very dissapointed by the experience we had during our recent stay. While the room was clean, we were three floors BELOW the lobby level. This would not be a big deal, however, the elevator was not in service do to "ongoing renevations". Furthermore, the carpet and wall paper in the stairway were ripped out (presumably as part of the renovation). It made the journey to our room feel like we were descending via a service entrance rather than the grand staircase one would expect to find at such an upscale (expensive) hotel. There were other minor issues as well and overall we were extremely dissapointed by our experience. We could have spent a lot less for a much better experience elsewhere. I would not recommend this hotel in its current state.

We shold have been informed that the elevators were not functinioning prior to our stay. It was very inconvient for us continually using the stairs

From the moment you pull into the valet area you are met with friendly faces! From the valets, front desk, wait staff and housekeeping you couldn't be made feel more welcome or important. Even an impromtu dinner of pizza (not on the menu) and wine on the pool deck after a grueling round in the fog at Torrey Pines was made possibly with just a suggestion. Sitting around in our hot tub (lush!) robes, sipping wine and enjoying the night will be talked about for years to come! Then upstairs to slide into , what I can only describe as 'liquid gold sheets' , was the icing on the cake! Heaven! Our stay was for 5 days, next time it will be for twice as long. The seashore trail meanders forever and we took great pleasure in watching flora and fauna - the fauna being the hours-old seal pups being nudged to shore by their mamas! Who needs Galapagos when you have La Jolla in February? Every moment of our time at the grand dame La V was special - every meal most delicious that there is no need to venture off the grounds. I will highly recommend the La Valencia to anyone who will listen!!

Great hotel in a great location. Definitely worth the price

The staff was amazing! And the location is perfect. It's in the center of La Jolla and is literally steps to the water with views from the pool, their restaurants and most rooms. I stay in 4 and 5 star hotels and this was just as impressive. I'd recommend it to others and would stay here again.

This is our second time (honeymoon and 6th anniversary) to stay here. WONDERFUL and memorable, again. Only problem we encountered was that the elevator upgrade was not finished and we had to walk up two flights of stairs - OK, it was more exercise after walking all day along the magnificent waterfront. Concierge and the parking attendants were helpful with restaurant suggestions and things to do locally and in San Diego.

As of Feb 2012 the hotel is undergoing renovations and I would not recommend it at even half the current rates. My room smelled musty and damp, the top-floor lounge was closed, as was the gift shop ... right now it's pretty much a dump. I over-paid at Hotels.com outrageously and I should have been warned. Now you have been.

We had a great stay allowing my husband to tour San Diego while I was able to work. Hotel - though old, is nicely appointed. Only complaint was the remodel to expand the elivator - so in an 8 floor hotel, no elevator. Staff helped with bags and front desk let us know alternate routes to minimze stairs. I know sounds odd, but this is build on a click so you enter hotel on 7th floor. Great people, good food and views are fantastic.

This is a beautiful classic property, wondefulr views of the Pacific from the lounge and dining room,a nd some rooms but know it is presently under renovation

Had a fantastic time at the HLV. The staff was excellent, down to the bartender in the Whaling Bar remembering us. The elevator was under repair, which was annoying. But, we only had to climb 2 flights of stairs, and the bellmen got our bags to and from our room. In a great location, walking distance from many shops, galleries and restaurants in La Jolla. Not to mention the proximity to the ocean. Had a great time, will definitely return and we have found our spot in La Jolla...

Lovely staff! Friendly and helpful. Amenities lacking during the off-season. Concierge was missing for three out of our four days, room wasn't made up until the afternoon, not enough newspapers our first morning(though when we told the front desk we wanted one they immediately had a bell person go down the street and get us one). There should be deeper discounts during this period of renovation.

The 8 of us were there for a mother/daughter girls wknd and we absolutely loved La Valencia! From the moment we got there to when we left, the staff were so nice and accommodating. A big shout out to the valets. They were so nice about transferring golf bags and giving us directions. The rooms were clean, comfortable and large. We loved their hot tub and pool. We could walk to everywhere we wanted to go in La Jolla. The beaches and boardwalks were just a block away. La Jolla Cove was filled with seals and birds and we could've spent the day just watching them. It was a true joy to be there and I can't wait to go back.

I seriously LOVE this hotel (and hotels.com for getting us such an awesome rate!)!!! Our ocean view room was spectacular, every morning we would open the balcony door and listen to the waves crash as the fresh ocean air swept through the room. My husband and I went to La Jolla for our wedding, and I honestly feel that we couldn't have stayed in a more perfect hotel. The building is a bit older, so it has a lot of character, but it is also kept up to date! There are a ton of restaurants and shops literally across the street and the beaches are just a couple minutes walk away. The valet and bellman were always very helpful, as were the waitstaff at the Mediterranean Room and the Whaling Bar. I hope we can go back for our anniversary every year :)

If you are in the San Diego area - check out this hotel and its surroundings. For just a moment I forgot that I was on business! Highly recommended.

Beautiful hotel and room with an ocean view, but what they failed to tell us when making the reservation online is that the elevator would not be working the weekend we were there, along with no ice machines in operation on any of the floors. We had to call room service each time to get ice from the hotel kitchen, and tip the hotel staff everytime they delivered. Doesn't seem right, having to pay for ice! Other than those two items. The hotel stay was very nice.

The staff were wonderful. Chatty and always attentive. We're world travellers, and the one thing that does concern me, is when the mattress is not replaced enough. Room 808 has a King Size bed, but it was so soft that both my husband and myself had sore backs. We would literally sink into the bed. Not a good thing. Should be some kind of process in place to replace mattresses, on a more timely basis, not when customers complain. Other than that, I would recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to LaJolla area. The bad: My mattress was wavy old. The iron and hair dryer didn't work. (I suspect big discount = unrenovated room.) Most shops on Prospect st. were closed at 7pm (or even vacant) on Thursday, December 1st. The good: This is an hotel with history and charm surrounded by art galeries, shops and restaurants. The neighbourhood was astonishingly quiet and the night warm enough so I could keep the door fully open to fall asleep on the sound of the ocean. The view is breath taking. The hotel's restaurant is top notch! There were special events during the week I stayed. (I could hear live piano one night, but was too tired to attend unfortunately!!!)

the best rooms are ocean front--with a spectacular view of the garden, pool, and most important--the Ocean.... the rooms are spacious, well appointed, and well positioned. The location is in the heart of La Jolla, the village. Restaurants, shopping, and walks along the ocean/cove are steps from the hotel. The staff is attentive and friendly. Eat at the hotels outdoor cafe--a great view of the ocean, and the food is great... It was a very relaxing visit

The elevator was non-operational (and will be that way for several more months) and the rooftop bar is closed until the elevator project is complete. Needless to say the hotel neglected to make that information available until we physically checked in. The location is great, right in the heart of La Jolla. That being said, I don't think the hotel was worth what we paid.

Great location, comfortable. very expensive parking and food

Our parents in law stayed at La Valencia while visiting us and raved about their experience. It's a wonderful hotel and we always have out of town guests stay here when visiting. The 4 stars for condition/maintenance of hotel is as a result of their renovations, which are greatly welcomed. We look forward to having out of town guests stay here again.

Good location, service and helpful staff. Hotel food was uninspiring but had excellent local restaurants. Enjoyable stay.

My wife and I had a lot to celebrate- my wife's birthday and our very first getaway from our now 2 year old daughter. We have visited La Jolla many times before, but never stayed at the La Valencia. Needless to say, it was a major treat for us. From right at check-in, our experience was 5 star. We arrived in the afternoon, our orig. room wasn't ready, but we were immediately upgraded to a 10 floor Ocean View. The room was amazing- ocean from the balcony, mountains from the window. At this point, the points I scored with my wife were off the charts! She was so excited, as was I. And to add to the "romantic factor" a wedding ceremony was just about underway right below our balcony. Overall, just a fantastic, relaxing, experience at one classy joint. Other Highlights: Great pool area (open 24hrs/day)- jacuzzi, great couples-lounge chairs and a ping pong table. The Sky Room Restaurant- the meal was absolutely amazing. The wait staff, the chefs- a solid experience. The Maid staff- super friendly, super respectful Two huge thumbs up to the classy and historic La Valencia Hotel!

We arrived at the hotel an hour before check-in, but had to wait about an hour after the check-in time to get our room. We didn't make too much of a fuss, even though we had a toddler who desperately needed a nap. They offered us a free drink at the bar. But when our room was ready, the hotel manager explained that they had bumped us up to a villa from the regular king room we had expected. He gave us a tour of the hotel on the way down to the room, and then showed it to us. It was a pretty fabulous treat.

Loved the room. The bed and pillows were so comfortable, it felt like being at home. This hotel is in fabulous condiiton, as it was built in the 1920's. It has stunning views. I hosted a party in the garden for my husband's birthday. The food was fabulous and the service exceptional We will come again.

Very charming hotel in an outstanding location. Room was small and minimally appointed. bathroom was tight. Food was average. Service was very good.

Loved the location. Parked car with valet and never needed it until checkout. Room was small but cozy and a wonderful, comfy bed and pillows. Pool area small but inviting. Great staff all over.

The food and service in the Mediterranean Room was horrible. I expected so much better. Terribly let down.

Lovely, lovely hotel, wonderful staff. Excellent food at restaurants and room service. Really an unexpected pleasure. When we return to the San Diego area, we'll be staying at the La Valencia.

Very disappointed with this hotel and the accommodations. Overly rated and pricey hotel that charged a $29 fee for valet parking. The King Bed room was very small and you could hardly move around in the bathroom. Only room for one person in the bathroom. Terrible...Bed was comfortable but the pillows were completely flat. Room service was not very responsive. Hair dryer didn't work well and overheated. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to others or stay here again.

Great accommodations. Very classy hotel. Really enjoyed returning to our room after dinner to a turned down bed with robes laid out and smooth jazz playing. One of the most comfortable beds I've slept in.
