Tim at front desk was wonderful. Lacks major ammenities like gym and business center, but very accomodating front-desk and hotel services. Very ecclectic place. I would stay again.

Enjoyed wine and cheese everyday between 5 and 6:30, relative proximity to Union Square at a competitive price , and complimentary continental breakfast. Missed having a mini refrigerator.

The staff was very welcoming and the hotel has a great location, close to Union square. Nice rooms.

The stay was nice.

The hotel is ok, but for the price, the rooms are extremely small. Also the walls are paper thin. There was a restaurant outside my room and even though I was on the 3rd floor, I could here conversations word for word. I was kept awake unitl 1-2am by how loud it was outside. The staff was friendly and helpful and the room was clean.

We had a great time and loved our room. It was cozy & the service was amazing!

Nice little surprise of a hotel. Grateful for the upgrade, as I received a charming corner room on 7th floor. Old old building has been remodeled nicely. Didn't take advantage of complimentary shot of tequila at check-in (got there at 10am...although it probably would have made the conference I was attending more fun). Down sides: noisy location, very sketchy neighborhood (MUST take cabs at night), hair in bathtub. Up sides: great bed and wonderful staff.

We had a wonderful time in the beautiful city of San Francisco! The staff was friendly, helpful, and fun. Breakfast and the afternoon wine and cheese was very nice and appreciated. Overall, The California Hotel was a lovely place to stay!

The hotel staff were warm & inviting, but our room was right next to an outdoor night club with partying going on into the early hours of the morning, be sure to check your room is not on that side of the building if you are a light sleeper. Otherwise it was only a short walk to Union Square & all the main shopping areas, so very convenient, & reasonably priced.

We liked our room, it was cute, clean and had a lot of character. The wooden floors were quite special, along with the huge windows. The staff were very helpful and nice. The only downside was that the king bed had a pretty big dip in the middle. Otherwise I would rate this 5.

I loved the hotel, its not for children at all. because the roms are small n cozy. Book this is its just for you and your sweetie, no kids.... This hotel is located in the heart of downtown so if you DONT like noise dont book here, we njoid it very much. They serve a nice breakfast thats free but we tried DOTTIES which is in walking distance for breakfast is a must go to, you will have a line but the food and service was well worth the wait, must go see Beaches of Babylon excellent play I must say, Tim, & Baji at the front desk were great!! Dont rent a car if you plan to tour Alcatraz unless you dont like to walk, we walked there it took us 30 min exactly to the pier leave hotel make a left out front door make a left on Stockton and keep it straight down to the pier, no hills or nothing. Excellent walk with sites to see.

This hotel was clean et had a good location ! We found our stay without any incident for a one night stay !! The personnel was kind and polite

Overall good. Matteresses need to be changed out for new. Bath towels too small. Staff helpful. Dont go for the next door cheaper parking; they are a bunch of money grabbing thugs.

Only go here if you want to party all night. The bar down stairs is extremely loud and you need ear plugs to sleep. The rooms are small. The TV did not work in one room. All of the people that work there were nice except for the chef that verbally attacked my wife in front of my 6 year old son over him trying to help pour milk on his cereal. The guy was absolutely ridiculous in his behavior and should be fired for the way he acted. This went on for ten minutes with him continuing to give every one in the family dirty looks the entire time we had breakfast. This is the worst treatment I have seen from a hotel employee toward a guest in 20+ years of traveling.

I really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel California, small but nice room, ok bathroom and good breakfast but some of this was overshadowed by the poor neighborhood. Every night on our way back to the hotel we were confronted by the homeless population, panhandling. The men were not dangerous but not something I like to deal with when on vacation. Be aware of your surroundings when you enter the Tenderloin district and take taxis. The neighborhood goes from bad to worse the further in you venture.

Unfortunately the beds are the most uncomfortable beds I have slept in. You should also not let the room opposite ther lift unless it is the very last one. We spent every night/ morning listening to people talking outside room witing for lift then the door banging not pleasant.

Excellent service, very nice staff. Great location. Comfy bed and pillows. Nice hotel. Only complaint is there is some kind of restaurant/night lounge next door and at night it got very loud from our room. It didn't really bother us though, we fell fast asleep.

My husband and I enjoyed our stay. It met all our expectations; continential breakfast and WI-FI. The room was comfortable and spacious for both of us. We are used to vactioning in historic hotels and expect that the rooms will be small and without air conditioning. The weather is mild enough that opening the windows or having the ceiling fan on made the room plenty comfortable. I read the reviews about the street noise and thought it might be an over exaggeration, but that was not the case. The hotel does offer complimentary ear plugs and in all honesty we got used it to it as best we could. Most of the staff members were friendly and helpful. So all and all I would recommend this hotel for the amenties and price.

We first got to the hotel there were hairs in the shower and sink. The water pressure was weak. The fire alarm went off twice in 2 days. The hotel is old and smells. The sheets were itchy, I had to request new ones. Valet takes forever because they park streets away and is very expensive. We checked out and went to the Westin St. Francis and loved it!

In the bathroom, the sink faucet nozzle sprayed out water everywhere. It got our clothes wet, the toilet set wet and floor. The nozzle needs to be taken off and either clean or replace with a new one. Everything else was good. We would stay there again when coming to SF.

Great hotel if you don't mind the noise of the party crowd

The staff was great... the location was perfect. Could walk to lots of places and cabs were easy to get. My bed and pillows were so comfy. My home away from home for the week. I'd stay there again. They had wine and cheese in the evening and a work-out room.

nice place but a bit noisy.

It was great that we could check in early - the hotel was ok but the area was not the best. No AC in the room. Overall good exerience.

Great Location & Friendly staff. Complimentary breakfast, wine tasting, cheese and a shot of tequilla when you check in. It was perfect.

We really enjoyed our stay at the hotel the location was great in walking distance to Union Square,where were able get on&off tour bus.We really enjoyed the wine and cheese hour.The front desk staff was very helpful in our tour planning.

This hotel is a full two city blocks from Union Square. I have stayed at several hotels closer to Union Square that were much nicer and cleaner and that cost less. This hotel is overpriced. The rooms are old and stained. The guest services were poor.

It's true, you're offered a free chilled shot of tequila at check-in! The desk employee was very friendly and check in was very smooth. The room, like you would expect in a city, is smallish. For two people, a queen room is fine. Flat screen wall-mounted tv is nice. Bathroom is nice but water pressure was very, very low. I'd definitely stay here again if I'm on a budget!
