I travel to Tokyo regularly with work and this is hands down one of the worst hotels for the price I have stayed at. Additionally if you find yourself in the misfortunate position of staying here avoid the steakhouse that is in the restaurant at all cost. There is wonderful food in Japan but this is not the place to find it. You'll pay dearly for wandering into this trap as well.

The Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa is a lovely hotel situated about 8 minutes walk from the Shinagawa station, while some may feel that it is a walk you do get to walk through the wonderful views of Sakura and the garden on your return or departure. It has depending on the room a lovely view of the garden or a view of Tokyo city including the Tokyo Tower and Sky Tree. Rooms are spacious and clean. Staff are very helpful and will try to help you with any query. It is helpful to learn some Japanese before your stay as this will help you not just at the hotel but elsewhere. The hotel is served by the Limosine bus so makes for an easy trip to and from the airport.

The service and hotel standard is very high, as with most Japanese hotel. Cleanliness of room is top standard. Cant really find any thing to fault at all. The location is very accessible and safe, with the Shinagawa subway station just 5 mins away. There are malls and restaurants around even for late night snack or supper.

I really enjoyed my stay. One reviewer gave me a heads up on how to enter the hotel through the sister hotel and walk through garden, Very helpful. It meant I didn"t have to climb up that hill twice a day.

The first room they had me in was small and "regular ", it ended up being very smelly and when I pointed this out to the manager I was put into a very large and very bright room where I spent the remaining 4 nights. Very nice, it is not that there is a problem every once. In a while but how one takes care of it.

The place is fine. Old, but fine. I suppose it was my own fault for not realizing that a 'New' version of the hotel also exists nearby.

It was very nice and comfortable and definitely will visit it next time.

The Takenawa Prince complex of hotels and gardens are a lovely oasis in the city with easy access to the Shinagawah train station, a major hub for connections all over the city. The modern hotel is spotlessly clean, beautifully maintained, with an accommodating and courteous staff that do everything possible in the way of service to assure your comfortable and pleasant stay. There is as free shuttle bus to and from the station every half hour but most days we enjoyed the brisk short walk to the train. The concierge and front desk are wonderful supplying maps and offering suggestions for local sights, restaurants, and entertainment. English fluency is also quite good which was helpful to us. Reasonable rates too!

Staff were very helpful. Clean rooms. Location is convenient being close to Shinagawa station. Will come again.

I would do it again. Very close to train which allowed me to get around easily. Also, a couple western food places (when you want to eat something you recognize).

The Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa is an ideal location within walking distance to the Shinagawa Station. From the airport, you take the Airport Limosene Bus which is about 1.5 hours away directly to the hotel. The surrounding is beautiful with a Japanese garden that connects 3 hotels and easy access to all of them for restaurant choices. The room is a bit on the small side but you do get free internet service in the room.

Brilliant. Wonderful staff - beautiful surroundings. Well maintained - wonderful decor. Top-shelf property. About a 7 minute walk from Shinagawa station - 15 with luggage (uphill). Next door to the Shinagawa Prince Hotel with the aquarium and aqua center. Your Takanawa room key entitles you to the same discounts as Prince guests. Great choice if you prefer the ambiance of Japanese gardens and decor. The garden can be seen through massive windows in the lobby - a 'good morning' view you'll miss immensely after you return home.

This hotel is conveniently located for easy access to all parts of Tokyo and the airports since Shinagawa Station is only 8-minute away. Hotel staffs are very professional, friendly and helpful. They provided us with excellent service. We had a superior twin room with garden view. This room is spacious. Beds are firm and comfortable. Bathroom is large and clean. The amenities include: shampoo set, tooth brush set, disposable razor, bathrobe, slippers, shower cap, comb and hair dryer; cotton swabs, ladies' personal care accessories; safe, electric kettle and tea bags, as well as a small fridge.

Lovely stay at Takanawa. Business center isn't great though. It is a coin operated computer and I never figured out how to print. Breakfast was fabulous, but pricey. Other meals were great too. Very close to subway and they have a convenient shuttle. Good option for Tokyo!

The hotel staff was very helpful and quite accommodating. We truly enjoyed our stay.

Very nice hotel with excellent service from all staff. The garden area in the rear of the hotel is beautiful and a very pleasant stroll. Restaurants in the hotel are quite expensive but many reasonable options are within walking distance. The hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the train station.

It was much too short. Room was comfortably decorated in traditional tatami and wall hangings. Helpful staff willing to help even if they could not speak English. It would have been better if Internet access was included in the room package.

Would stay here again -- especially at the good rate we had for this stay. Excellent staff and beautiful property.

Nice enough room, great garden, but no wireless? What's up with dat?

First, let me say I hated this hotel, and I would never return there or recommend it to anyone. The location is in the most boring part of Tokyo, you will need to leave the area to do anything, decent shopping, decent restaurants, decent nightlife - none of that will be found anywhere near this hotel. The hotel advertises wifi - well, for a surcharge, and only if they happen to be able to supply your room with a route, of which they have a limited supply. So there's a good chance you won't have to spend an extra Y1000 per day because there's a good chance they won't have a router to give you. Oh, and the concierge service - useless, totally useless. Anything good about this place? Well it is only 10 minutes (uphill walk) from Shinagawa Station on the JR line, a key subway line for getting around Tokyo, and one you will use often, because there is nothing to enjoy in or near the hotel Avoid it like the plague!

Hotel - given that we went during spring (cherry blossoms, sakura period), the hotel has a Japanese styled garden right in the middle of its premises (where the outside public is also allowed entry), which is beautifully-naturally decorated with lots of cherry blossom trees, old Japanese huts/shrines, rocks, architecture, zen-looking rock arrangements. This is just absolutely scenic! There was even quite a fair of outside public seen walking the premises and snapping their cameras for a photo or two.. The hotel has an brick-styled facade which is typically of old-styled japanese hotels, but filled with rich, modern interiors, giving the hotel a very modern-yet-old-feel-kind of hotel. And accompanied with such a scenic garden, this hotel is quite worth even cent. The room is decently sized, just like all other Japanese hotels that we had stayed in before during our trips, but coupled with great amenities. The hotel has even bars/resturants/cafes for guests to hang out, within the hotel itself. A full fledged hotel. Service from the staff is good as always, just like any other Japanese service staff that you may see during your shopping trips. Surroundings - given the hotel is located on top of a small hill, the surroundings thus is a little quiet but peaceful. Shinagawa is almost like a business district area, so do not expect much night establishments open around the area. Convenient shops are around 7-10 mins walk away.. Transport - Shinagawa is one of the busiest/important train interchange where both the subway/metro lines and Shinkansen (bullet trains) are present. So it is extremely convenient for one to travel to and from Shinagawa to explore Tokyo. And yes they operate pretty early till pretty late.. so there is never a worry for you to be stranded out somewhere in Tokyo. I had stayed here about 5 years ago, so when I booked this time I knew what to expect. This hotel is a bit dated - the lobby and architecture makes you think it is 1972. The rooms are comfortable, but also a tad dated compared to the latest business hotels in the same area (like the Intercontinental Strings). However it is at least half the cost of that hotel, and I think a fair tradeoff. The location is just a 1.5 blocks from Shinagawa station, and a great place for business. The garden next to it is amazing, and I think makes up for the datedness of the lobby. Overall I think this hotel is a great trade-off for price/comfort/location for doing business in the Tokyo area. One caveat: The "free" internet is ONLY for WIRED internet. If you want WIFI it costs extra. I was okay with this, but I saw other guests in the hotel who were a put off by this.

When leaving Shinigawa station, there are numerous Prince Hotels in sight. The Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa is a little harder to spot and the walk is only a minute or two farther, but it is every bit as luxurious at a much more competitive price. The staff was eager to make the stay as pleasant as possible. If you need to access the Shinigawa Station and can tolerate up to a 5 minute walk, I highly recommend this hotel.

It is an older hotel but clean and room's size is adequate for Japanese standards. It was a challenge to communicate with the reception staff because we were a group with 4 rooms and breakfast charges. Their English skills are not that great. The location close to Shinagwa Station is a big plus especially for those who use JR Pass. If we ever return to Tokyo we would probably stay there again if the price is right.

A short walk from Shinagawa Station so very easy to get anywhere quickly by train. Hotel is a little dated but don't let that dissuade you. Rooms and bathrooms are a little small by modern standards but perfectly comfortable - unless you are an NBA basketball player in which case you may prefer to stretch out in the corridor. It has always been an excellent hotel - with the usual outstanding and genuinely friendly Japanese staff.

Room was comfortable, but in serious need of a major update. I felt like I was in an eastern European hotel in the 70's. Location is okay, a bit off the beaten path but close to Shinegawa Station. Understanding of English was minimal. I was told the room came with free internet. Wired internet, no wifi. I found that be be a bit dubious.

Pros: Great location, great service, clean and spacious rooms. Cons: Firm bed, stains on carpets, charges to call long distance even if using a phone card. Overall: Recommended

A bit pricey but a convenient stay. 5 minutes from Shinagawa Station which also has the shinkansen service. The service was nice and they speak English. The interior could do well and be refurnished, but nothing really to complain about. I could see the Tokyo Tower from my room and it was beautiful to see at night. You're best to get a taxi to the hotel (even if it's 5 mins away) as it's on a slope and can be quite difficult to wheel luggage uphill. Nevertheless, I enjoyed my stay.

everytime i come to tokyo i will stay at this hotel. the staff is extremely friendy and everything about this hotel is great. the room i had this time had a great view of tokyo tower which was beautiful at night. the train station is a 10min walk down the hill or you can wait for the shuttle bus thats free and brings you straight to the shinagawa station. i will always stay at this hotel when i visit tokyo no matter what. its the best place i have stayed for a decent price

I booked on a promo deal through hotels.com, the hotel is a very short walk from the big JR station. It is situated in the middle of a stunning garden, the rooms I booked was not available so I was upgraded and they apologised for it!!! I could not recommend this hotel hotel more. The only slight problem was the cost of the restaurants (of which there is a great selection) in the hotel, but I'm sure the food is superb. But if you don't want to spend more than the cost of your room on a meal there are plenty of excellent places within a couple of minutes of walk of the station

The room is spacious, by Japan standards. Pricing is fair, for the quality of the room and service. Hotel is 400 meters from a subway station, connecting you to almost anywhere in Tokyo. I was in the 12th floor, I had a great view of the city from up there.

We recently stayed at the Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa for a week while on a two week visit, in a twin room on the 9th floor overlooking the garden. From the moment we entered, service was at the very highest - helpful and courteous staff, attentive and able - and this kind of service continued all throughout our stay. The room was nice and large (even by non-Japanese standards), clean, and cleaning staff/bell service was great. When we first checked in the room smelled a bit, but one call and they quickly came up to change the previously damp shower curtain and spray room. The hotel has a large walking garden at the back, that connects to the other Prince hotels (regular Prince Hotel, Grand Prince New Takanawa, and Sakura Towers), which was nice to wander around during some downtime. Other facilities include free high speed internet, laundry service (additional charge), and direct shuttle bus to Narita airport. I believe they have a pool in the New Takanawa branch, however I'm not sure about access or charges as spent most of the time outside the hotel. On googlemaps, the Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa looks close to Shinagawa station - while this is largely true, the walk is uphill and a lot longer than expected (10-15 mins on a hot summer's day, after a whole day of walking around Tokyo is not the most fun thing to do). You can cut through the Sakura tower and garden for a shortcut, or use the Prince Hotel shuttle bus service, running between the hotel and station every half hour starting from 8am and ending at 9pm. Do note that you must book to get onto it outwards from hotel, though you just walk on to get picked up from station. In terms of proximity to things, the Takanawa side has a few restaurants, convenience stores, food courts and shopping malls. There are a lot of decent food places inside Shinagawa station (find the standing sushi joint and you will not be disappointed, as they are part of a chain that source directly from Tsukiji fish markets daily). Got room on 14th floor with view of Tokyo skyline and a tower that looked like Eiffel tower. The garden is pretty and the room was much bigger than other Prince hotels I stayed. Buffet breakfast is more expensive. The walk to Shinagawa station is a pain if you have luggage. I learnt just while leaving that the hotel has bus shuttle to Shinagawa station (for free??).

Excellent Hotel in a good Tokyo district for visitors. Within walking distance (10 minutes), right up the hill from the busy Shinagawa station, this hotel is a great choice from which to access the city. Front desk service is polite and professional, most importantly proficient in English, including a currency desk for obtaining the all important yen. Rooms were spacious and comfortable for Japanese standards.
