The hotel is in a good central location to surrounding areas and sights. the hotel is kind of small, no ice machine, kinda run down a bit. the rooms are big and very modern looking. you can smell the bleech that the cleaned with. the walls looked like water was leaking inside of them since you could see the stains. shower did not work properly, bed seemed like it was about to fall apart!!! i would not stay here again unless i HAD to.

The rooms are simply and tastefully decorated. They have free garage parking, Direct TV and the central location is ideal. My only complaint was that the thin walls allowed me to eavesdrop on an actor preparing for his audition. I slept like a log, but if you're a light sleeper the street noise might wake you.

great staff,the love dogs.

The hotel is very modern and different than your average hotel. They are under construction so I think when they are done it will be a lot nicer. My main complaint was that they didn't have a refrigerator in the room and didn't have an ice machine. How am I suppose to keep my drinks and food cold??? The walls are a bit thin so I Could hear neighbors but wasn't too bad. I loved the convenience of walking right down the street to catch the metro. The bed was super comfy and I enjoyed the modern bathroom. I would stay here again when they are done remodeling to see how it looks.

Hotel outside appearance can use some work (I was a tiny bit nervous when I arrived) but once you walk in its all worth it . Staff is all super friendly polite and helpful I was checked in and out of my room in less then a minute .. Front desk staff was Prepared and aware of incoming guests (even suggested a great restaurant in the area) . Room was well kept clean and fresh. Bed was very comfortable, fresh sheets , towels ,toiletries , mini coffee machine .. Bathroom was very clean great size tub for soaking and relaxing . Close to all must see sights ..over all I was very satisfied and would gladly stay here again on any upcoming trips to the area .. :-)

Everything was fine! As a matter of fact everything was wonderful, couldn't get better! Its just that the room above me had noisy people staying there and it was hard for me to sleep, especially late at night! I heard them pulling chairs across the floor and stepping very very hard!

Good location to Hollywood,Downtown,Art museum---Room was large with a sparse art deco appearance'; bath was extra large with separate bath tub and shower----the bath had no soap and no soap dish in shower we had to request bath towels and the air conditioner had a mind of its own--at least you could open the windows . The tv is a 32 incher with satellite reception, it takes a few minutes to figure out controller, The bed is very comfortable. Ice is available from the owners refrigerator and coffee with donut etc. is provided in the morning--we didn't learn about donuts until the day we left. The check in desk is on the second floor and the staff was very friendly and helpful---if some of the bugs are worked out it could be economic alternative to some of the high priced rooms in the area. We felt relatively safe walking the area. Parking can get tight --no problem on our visit.

I have been staying at Shelter Los Angeles since they first opened. There really isn't another hotel in the area that I would prefer stay in. I have watched this hotel grow and improve throughout its existence. It is evident that the owners are constantly working to upgrade the hotel, especially in the newly renovated public areas. Having said that, there needs to be a little more attention to room details. Upon my arrival I discovered that the clothing rack and shelf was missing. I immediately notified the front desk, and within minutes a guy came up with a new rack and shelf. He was however quite surprised that no one on the staff had alerted him about the missing rack. He stated that he was shocked that no one from housekeeping had even noticed the equipment missing, much less alerted the front desk. Hmmmm, curious. Also during my stay, there was a substantial rain storm on Friday. When I returned to my room I could hear water dripping, but couldn't immediately identify where it was coming from. I soon noticed that there was water on the floor near the window, and that water was leaking into the room from the frame around the window. I always stay in the same room on the top floor, if I can get it. I had alerted the management a few years ago when I first noticed the problem. While this is not an inconvenience, it appears that no one has followed up on this potentially expensive problem. Come on guys, you're better than that.

We went for a romantic getaway for one day and it was perfect and cozy. Had HMO and watched movies with my honey. The only thing that was missing was it had no iron for my husband suits or and ice machine for our drinks. Besides that everything was just nice!

This hotel would be worth raving about for its simplicity and design; I liked all three people I met working behind the desk, the bed was super comfortable, the room was spacious and the bathroom well-appointed. The only drawbacks to this hotel were the limited parking (accommodated by a friendly person shifting cars around in a confined underground garage) and, unfortunately, the loudest slamming doors I've ever heard in a hotel. Of course people have to come and go, but every door in the entire hotel slammed shut and shook the otherwise quiet building. That's a real shame, especially during times when everyone is coming or going early in the morning. They could easily fix the doors to close less violently; I hope they do. I'd like to stay there again.

An unpretentious hotel in Koreatown, run by a lovely young couple. Our room was clean, with a rather bare aesthetic (which we didn't mind) and an extremely comfortable bed with very nice bedding. The location was great--2 blocks from the metro with trains running every 10 minutes until late at night. There was free parking under the hotel, and we really didn't use our car. The neighborhood seemed quite safe, and there were great Korean BBQ places nearby. We were very happy with our stay and will definitely return on our next visit to LA.

I rarely do reviews and am almost hesitant to do so about Shelter because I want it to be a well-kept secret. However, I can't help but give it the praise it deserves. They are exactly what the advertise -- affordable, boutiquey, hotel in downtown LA. I was pleasantly surprised by the cozy comfy room. And though the parking lot does fill up at night, they are more than accommodating with moving your car should you be double parked. The people at the front desk were always kind and helpful. But the best part really is the location. I'm definitely making this my go-to spot for my trips to LA. Shelter is perfect for business trips and weekend getaways I'd say. I would only presume that it's not an ideal place should you be traveling with a family as it doesn't have lots of the nice-to-haves most chain hotels would provide. (ice/fridge in room/free breakfast) Then again, you're in the heart of Koreatown which has almost anything you'd need open at all hours.

As a mid-price hotel this delivers. The service on reception was amazing - very pleased to help out. First impressions were it was slightly run down but the actual room was good - v comfy bed and clean bathroom. Location is great, safe outside and easy to drive to hollywood or santa monica areas, or walk to metro. Would definitely stay here again.

There was only one lady with a lovely accent that was enjoyable. Once again, the staff made me crazy. Why did I come back???? Because it was dog friendly and near the area that I needed to be, and I booked it last minute. But, I will happily dish out and extra 30 minute drive and an extra $100 bucks to never come here again.

When we checked in there was no hand soap in the room and despite requesting some that night we did not get any until the next day. Our shower was broken and would not get really hot and that problem was not fixed during our stay despite mentioning it a couple of times. The staff seems overwhelmed - they mean well but have far too much to do to provide decent service.

The hotel itself was ok, looks like they are still going thru a re-model. The room was very clean and had a modern - deocor type look. The one thing I did like was the bed was very comfortable. Overall it was a nice stay. The hotel is located close to wilshire blvd so theres restaurants and some bars. I would say the worse thing about the hotel is the parking. They have a garage for parking but they double park the cars at night, so if you have to get out its very frustrating. And parking in the neighborhood is terrible. A friend came by to visit and it took 45 min to find a spot.

Hotel is in a residentaial community. Although the staff is only one person per shift, they are very accommondating to guests. Must request refrigerators. The hotel is in the middle of renovations. Central air system has not been completed. Much better security should be provided residents/hotel guests. Cable TV system continuosly lost the connections.

Usually a picture says a 1000 words. In this hotel however, the pictures are telling a far better story than reality. The hotel is a typical neighbourhood motel. Rooms are clean and spacious but lack any personality or equipment. The Korean neighborhood is fine but the restaurant selection is very limited (unless you like Korean BBQ). The Shelter offers a decent room for a decent price but do not expect more than that.

Great neighborhood and location. The room was always clean and the beds were really soft and comfy. I spent three nights and four days at the hotel and it was really convenient to walk to and from the subway, and finding places to eat wasn't a problem too. Although the hotel lacked faciliates it definitely made up for it with its modern touch and architecture. The faucet over the bathtub was a little too confusing to operate at first but I soon got the hang of it. I wished they provided a hairdryer in the bathroom though!

I had a fantastic experience with this hotel. The room was simple, but decorated nicely and clean. The bed was comfortable and there were no problems with noise. A dog was barking in the hall, but I could not hear it inside the room. The front desk staff were wonderful and very accommodating. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.

this hotel is great.. saved me for a week! the rooms are nice, private and comfortable, the staff delivers anything thats needed, and the neighborhood is quiet (for the most part) I feel the only major drawback to this hotel is the hood in which it sits. Still very close to the 101, The shelter hotel neighbors a public school, and busy & often filthy Wilshire Blvd. so there is a constant flow of kids and freaks walking the streets. Overall, the Hotel was clean nothing stood out as an issue. I recommend this hotel to anyone! business, leisure, sport.

Comfortable bed. Internet was fine, both wired & wireless. Was a good location for me (without car), with easy access to train and buses, and food places nearby. Was not as quiet as I wanted, with lots of sound on the floor above and in the corridor coming through, and some noise from vehicles on the street. The woman who checked me in was very pleasant but did not say anything about breakfast coffee and (non-nutritious) food in the lobby. I only knew about it from reviews. When the young man was on duty he offered me milk for the coffee, but the woman never did. Prior to when they lock the external door at night anyone could walk off the street into the corridors, so be sure to lock your room. The chain on my door came right off the door jamb, but that didn't bother me. I didn't stay out after they locked the doors but would have had a problem if I did as I didn't have my mobile phone with me. I thought it was a very reasonable price.

\The property had litte to no security. \no front desk area or other amenities at all. You can access guest rooms from undergound parking which is not secured - open underground with maybe 12 stalls/ anyone off the street can get in elevator direct to room access. Other issue no central heating - heater did not work in room ( plug in style) . Corridor for room access was outside like motel style. Doors had large gaps cold air coming in from outside.

This hotel was surprising. Judging by its location, front desk, and hallways, I did not expect the room to be as nice as it was. You can definitely tell that the rooms have been recently renovated. Overall, the hotel as not bad. The location is not ideal and the views are terrible (apartment patios) but the room was comfortable, clean, and quiet.

Hotel convenient to our son's house, room clean and staff friendly. We would stay here again. If staying more than 2 nights and I would prefer to stay at a hotel with amenities such as ice machine and small refrigerator.

dont not stay here, if you do, request a room facing south, anything facing north and you will bums picking through the dumpsters, and DO NOT drive a BIG TRUCK there, it will not fit in their parking garage.

Really good sleep on pillow top mattress. Very minimal furniture. Needs touch up on the walls. No ice machine. They offer bottle water when they are not out. Most of the staff I found friendly. Paper thin floor...can hear people walking hard and dragging furniture around over head. Parking sucks to the most on high. Not enough spaces for all of the patrons. Be careful who you let valet your car. Not everyone is a good driver. Oops did I just hit the wall with the truck...hmmm It is an apartment complex turned into a hotel. Location Korea Town. Walking distance to local stores and restaurants.

Overall, this was an excellent place to stay, and great value for the money! The young man at the front desk was very helpful with directions and suggestions for dining. We were pleasantly surprised with the comfort and cleanliness of the room. The only negative comments that I have are that the lobby windows were dirty, and that the baseboards in our bathroom needed cleaning. Other than those two small items, it was perfect. The free wireless internet, and free parking topped off a great stay.

I stayed here with my husband for a weekend getaway. We definitely were not impressed but not completely disgusted either. The room reminds me of a studio apartment, clean and very simple. There were no amenities besides the satellite cable and wireless Internet connection. I don't know that I would choose to stay here again, unless my options were limited. Overall a good stay.

Free parking space provided, good if you go with a car. Very basic (the room condition is not exactly as shown in the pictures. There is no ipod alarm in our room), just for shower and sleep. Cleaning standard has to be improved as I found hair in the bed.

I was a bit worried staying at a hotel with a pink knight but it was a 10 minute drive to where our friends lived so we booked it. The reception area was under renovation and looked like a warehouse but the guy at the front desk was incredibly nice. Went up to our room and was pleasantly surprised. It looked like it was out of an IKEA catalog. Right at home for us. Very simple, clean, comfortable. If you need anything, all you got to do was ask. I needed a hair dryer and got one right away. No refrigerator but we didn't need one. It is in a safe residential area of Koreatown so we were super close to a lot of good food and a fairly large new mall. There was a lot of grass around too so our puppy could take his potty breaks. This is a convenient location that we could go visit our friends, drive to the area of the Hollywood sign (I forget the name of the observatory), saw Hollywood Boulevard, and Rodeo Drive. Everything touristy was only a 10-15 minute drive. The extra money we saved I spent shopping. There is no coffee maker but they have coffee in the lobby. Made fresh for you it seemed at any hour since we saw one guy with hot coffee and 10pm. Everyday we enjoyed the surprise morning snack. We had cake one day, some awesome muffins, and I think the other day was some pastry. Some of it looked and tasted homemade. When we stayed they said they were renovating the pool and kitchen but we had no intention on swimming outdoors in winter anyway. I start feeling chills at 70 degrees. Overall, my husband and I would definitely stay here again and have already recommend the hotel to our friends. It's reasonably priced for a nice clean place to sleep and really good service.

I had no closet, no remote, no hair dryer in the room when I arrived. It took me one day to get a closet in the room. The room was facing the inner courtyard with minimum sunlight. The AC/heater was very loud. When you try to open the window, you have to hear the loud noise of the AC/heaters of the other rooms facing the inner courtyard. The water pressure was very low in the shower, especially when you turned the hot water on. The walls are very thin and it was noisy. The water pipes make a strange sound when you turn the water on. Pillows are the worst ever. Oh, one more: No mirror in the room, either. You have to use the one in the bathroom. I was asleep when they called me from the reception one night at 11:00pm asking me if I double parked my car in the garage downstairs. If I had double parked, I would have given the car keys to the person at the reception desk...

The hotel is not worthy the price they charge for it. Do not ask for anything, not even ice is available. No bf available, shampoo one for two people... Shower not well cleaned...

I was in LA for a few weeks and was staying at another place in West Hollywood before switching over to Shelter midway through my stay. I picked it mostly because of location, I wanted to be within walking distance of an office building at Wilshire & Western. I picked this one over others nearby because it seemed like a nicer place, the price fit the budget (cheaper than where I was by about 30%) and it offered free parking. The location is a little odd in that it's on a quieter, residential street that's mostly apartments and such, but walk a block south and you're on 6th Street, a little further and you're on Wilshire. I liked that and did a fair amount of walking around the neighborhood in daytime and nighttime hours. The building itself is a little older and you can tell they are working on the remodeling although it's probably a slow process. When I was there the lobby still had some electrical work to be done, some drywall & painting, etc. So if swank lobbies are something you need, give them a little time. But the room was fine. Very sparse and minimalist, but there was a lot space, and the bed was very good with nice bedding, pillows, etc. The bathroom was a little small in my room, but had a nice selection of toiletries available and soft towels. I was staying for a week so I asked for some extra hangers for the closet when I arrived and they had them up in my room that evening when I returned. I tend to be a low-maintenance guest and prefer a quiet and unobtrusive staff. There only ever seemed to be one person on in the lobby and I hardly interacted with them anyway, so I can't speak to any concierge services if you are someone who requires those... but it doesn't seem like that kind of place. It's a nice place for a reasonable (LA-scale) price, and they leave you alone to come and go as you please by foot or by car. I'd stay there again and would like to see it when the remodel is done. -JMK

Very few options for hotels in LA's Koreatown. This one option is extreme bare bones, e.g., nothing on the walls, no kleenex, orginal labels left on pipes, no place to hang towels, poor installation of outlets and fixtures (heating/cooling unit not properly installed). Advertised internet service does not work (upon inquiry was told it does not work with Apple products???). The quality of plumbing and electrical work made me a little uncomfortable. Strange smells in the room (sprays used to mask other odors?) I guess you get what you pay for. If you simply need a cheap place to crash (bed was very good quality and comfortable) then this is a good choice. Just don't expect anything resembling what you've seen in any other hotel.

Don't go by the website. Although it looks swanky chic and contemporary in the photos, the hotel itself is bare bones. "Shelter" in all sense of the word. It's a converted apartment building. The building itself is only painted on three sides. As you walk around to the unpainted side you will notice the unfinished pool (empty and back area). There lobby consists of just a desk and some couches, plus a bunch of empty doorways that lead to empty drywall rooms. Seems like they just wanted to do the bare minimum to start renting rooms and then finish as money comes in. As for the hotel room itself, there is NO CLOSET OR DRESSER, NO IRON, NO HAIR DRYER, NO FRIDGE, NO ALARM CLOCK, NO TOWEL RACK, NO COFFEE MACHINE, AND WALLS ARE BARE, NO ART ETC. Just a room with a bed, desk, one chair, two nightstands with lamps. That's it. There's an air conditioner, however no means of adjusting the heat if it gets too cold. The only perk is it's pet friendly and service is good/courteous. The walls are extremely thin and our room's window overlooked a empty middle concrete courtyard the size of a walk in closet. Like a prison courtyard. Continental lobby breakfast consists of a cup of coffee and a cookie or piece of box cake. There are no brochures or literature of surrounding sights or delivery food vendors. Another minus is after 1am you're pretty much stuck outside as there's no way to get in unless you call the lobby desk. Next time stay at the Howard Johnson a block away. More amenities, same price point. Maybe in a year or two this place will be done and it will be awesome, but for now it's still under construction and the rooms are rented out to make money rather than sit bare with no revenue stream.

Clean, comfortable, convenient. Pretty fantastic overall. The building is still partially under construction/renovation, hence the 3 star in condition.

OK, so from the outside, it looks a little sketchy. My guess is that it's converted from an apartment building built in the '60s. Inside, though, it's a different story: nice looking minimilist decor and a wonderful staff. My room was big, clean, and stylish, with a lovely bed and a bathroom that was everything you want in a bathroom. Add in the free parking and wi-fi, and it was a perfect deal for me. They are currently working on an outdoor pool, which I was told should be ready for summer, and may have an outdoor ping-pong table as well. After those are ready, I think I'll have to come and stay here again.
