Rio hotels are ridiculously overpriced, but this one offers good value - two blocks from the beach, lots of shops and stuff nearby, decent free breakfast, nicely decorated. Rooms aren't huge but are nicely done - would stay here again.

We stayed for five nights with my girlfriend and we were really not impressed by this hotel. The staff are efficient, but not particularly polite. Our room was supposed to be superior, but it actually seemed to be one of the smallest rooms on our floor. Also, there was a connecting door with the next room, making every noise from our neighbor audible (they should have thought about putting a couple in a room with more privacy). Overall, it would be an ok hotel if it wasn't that overpriced. Apart from the location, there's nothing special about it.

It's a nice clean hotel in good location in Ipanema, the hotel is a little bit expensive for what it is, but everything is expensive in Rio, i really recommend this hotel, good neighbourhood, good staff, within walking distance from a great beach of ipanema.

We were in Rio De Janeiro for the week of Carnaval 2012. The hotel is centrally located in Ipanema... the shops and restaurants are just at your footstep. (Note: most shops shut down during the Carnaval long weekend, so don't plan any shopping that weekend) Downstairs is a great bar that gets busy in the evenings. The room was very clean, modern and nice. We had a view facing the street. Ipanema beach was a 2 minute walk... the hotel is great as they provide towels, beach chairs and an umbrella (on the beach vendors rent out these items, so we were lucky we didn't have to waste money). Bring a little cash to buy drinks and snacks from beach vendors. Cariocas hit the beach from 11am-3pm then continue to the street parties. Every girl wore a bikini (no exceptions) and most guys wore speedos (boardshorts make you look like a gringo) on the beach. During Carnaval there were so many street parties at Ipanema beach that we were glad we didn't select a hotel on the beachfront as the streets got completely trashed, crowded and rowdy. Mar Ipanema was great as it was located 1-2 streets away from the overcrowded street parties. Hotel service was impeccable. Hotel staff spoke english and gave us great tips on places to eat, provided tickets for Carnaval (with best seats(section 11) and bus transfers), and arranged Rio day tours for us. We felt that Ipanema was very safe and even found ourselves walking around the streets late at night. Great hotel with a perfect location for Rio Carnaval.

Very well located, just a short walk to the Ipanema beach and the Rodrigo de Freitas Lake. The food quality served at the restaurant is also very good. The only down side is that they don't offer bigger rooms, with 2 queen beds for instance, which can be a problem for a family of 4. Other than that is great.

I recently stayed here and was pleasantly suprised by how lovely the place was. Its a small hotel but the rooms are comfy and clean and of a good size. They are stylish and the hot water is plentiful. I would say that the location here is really good (2 mins from the beach and near loads of places to eat in a safe area) - especially as it is located/linked to a small bar and restaurant. This was one of our holiday highlights and was busy all day and all night! The caipririnas and the local food dishes they served were excellent. What a find! This is understated in the write ups about the place. Definately reccommended!!

Seriously, this hotel really did make our stay in Rio 100% better. We made the mistake of staying in a cheap hotel room for the first couple of nights, near the beach on the Copa side. We had a below standard experience, which was impacting our view of Rio. I couldn't take another night, so jumped on Hotels.com and found something far, far better - Mar Ipanema, near Ipanema beach.. They really looked after us and, though we paid more than we had budgeted, it's a totally reasonable rate for a very nice room. I think it contributed to my fiancé saying yes to my proposal! Will definitely stay again.. Thanks Mar Ipanema!

The Hotel is in a great great location.. two blocks from the beach and is in a very busy comercial street full of stores, bars and restaurants. The pictures of the rooms are much better online than what really is... The rooms are nice and clean, renovated but in a simple style (best western style) the shower is nice what is a plus :) and the staff is really nice, the elevator is old and takes a long time. It´s a great place to stay if you want to stay in Ipanema paying less really close to the beach and hang out places. If you don[t expect fancy this is a place to stay! It was fun!!!

great location, above a devessa bar/resturant.. 2 blocks from the beach.. all the busses stop outside the hotel, great buffett breakfast in the devassa resturant for free.. totally enjoyed it for location and great room

This was a good choice for us. Hotel was two blocks from beach and hotel provided umbrella, chairs & towells for beach providing we carried them back and forth. It was close to a variety of restaurants but area was on the pricey side. Front desk folks were helpful, spoke English, and very friendly. Room was plain but comfortable and clean and had a small refrigerator which was very helpful. Breakfast included scramble eggs, cold cuts, cheese, fruits and variety of breads & pastery, also coffee, tea, and juices. Hotel and restaurant, which joined the hotel lobby was clean. No one in restaurant spoke English. English speaking tours were available at front desk. We,ll return again with our adult kids.

One of the best hotels i stayed at only problem is small but thats modern for you now adays.

I left two shirts worth over $500 dollars in the wardrobe and they were not found... despite calling the hotel an hour after check out. Great location... but i'd pay a bit extra and get a hotel with a pool.

Stayed there for 2 nights. The hotel is located in Ipanema close to everything and only 2 blocks from the Post 10 on the beach. Breakfast buffet was good, service friendly. Great shower in bathroom and clean. it does need some updating though. The best part was I stayed on the 11th floor (last floor) and had a magnificent view of the Christ and Lagoa. Internet wireless worked fine, no gym... Any how, how much time do you spend in the hotel.....

This is an extremely well-located, comfortable, well-run hotel in the heart of Ipanema, walkable to Leblon or Copa. The English-speaking (multilingual) staff is very good; included breakfast is good and generous, and the restaurant offers a handy place for a drink or lunch as well. The room itself was quite nice, with free internet, a good bathroom and well-stocked minibar, and comfortable bed. I recommend it.

Excellent service, clean modern rooms, updated bathrooms, fantastic restaurant and great location on a prime shopping street in Ipanema and 2 blocks from the beach. Would stay here again!

Although not on beach(and therefore not commanding such high rates) it is close by and surrounded by bars and shops. The bar where you have breakfast is lively at all times and the food is fine. Our bedroom was one of the best we experienced in brazil, bright bedding and subtle lighting with view over trees on main road. Staff happy to store suitcases until later departure. Pity that information in room was a long list of 'don'ts' rather than important info such as breakfast times!

great place for a very short stay in Ipanema. Front desk staff are very friendly and helpful, great location. The standard rooms are far too small for a stay of more than 2 nights. decent breakfast at Devassa on the main floor, and a great place for chopp!

Great location. Two blocks from Ipanema beach. Rooms are very clean. Staff very friendly and helpful. From an American perspective, rooms are a little small, however very comfortable. Who goes to Rio to spend time in their hotel room anyway! Great access to beach and to stores. We would stay there again without hesitation.

I had little expectations about this hotel, as it was kind of a last-minute booking I had to do where nothing else was available. Well, I was actually pleasantly surprised!! Yes, it is a small hotel, but the rooms are quite nice, well cleaned, with flat screen, wooden floor, a nice restaurant/bar (Devassa) attached to it where you get (good) breakfast. Staff was very friendly and helpful. I was on business, so I didn't really go to the beach, but I thought its location was superb in terms of proximity to it (only 2 short blocks). It is at the Ipanema/Leblon border area, which I've been told is one of the safest areas amongst all the popular beaches. Anyway, I'd definitely consider it again when I am in Rio next time.

Hote is CLEAN, comfortable and well located. Rooms are small but bathroom very nice. There is a wide range of accomadations in Brazil, I have stayed in more expensive hotels that were not even close to the quality of this hotel. I will stay there again next time I am in Rio.

After reading some really disappointing reviews about hotels in this price range and even higher, I was happy to find this hotel with good reviews. It lived up to all of them. I was extremely pleased with this hotel. The staff were excellent (which we relied on alot), the location was absolutely perfect. I highly recommend this hotel.

My trip to Rio had all kinds of scheduling/traveling conflicts (as some trips do). Flights were delayed, reservations for other hotels were "lost", etc. We found this place last second, checked in and never looked back. It was the greatest. Great location, great food next door, etc. Very friendly and helpful staff. Right off the beach at Posto 10. Loved it, would definitely recommend to anyone going to Ipanema, or Rio for that matter.

This hotel was a very good place to stay for the beginning of the holiday as it was close to all facilities including Ipanema beach which is a little quieter than Copacabana. The proximity to restaurants, grocery store, post office, Church etc. was useful to get to know one's surroundings on a first trip to Brazil before venturing on further. From the hotel we managed to be able to book a soccer game which is a must when on a first visit to Brazil - just for the atmosphere alone & we managed to go to a good game which was a bonus.

Very friendly front desk staff who did everything in their power to make our stay comfortable. This hotel was just a 2 minute walk to the magnificent Ipanema beach. The hotel organized a super "Express sightseeing tour" of many of the highlights of Rio. This was a great way to see these sights when we were only there for 2 and a half days. We did have a problem getting to the airport on Friday evening, we got into a taxi at 10minutes past 6 oclock and arrived at the airport at 20 minutes past 8 ! A journey of 2 hours and 10 minutes. This trip had taken us 35 minutes on arrival. Apparently traffic in Rio on a Friday evening does not move so beware if you are flying on a Friday evening. We did enjoy our short trip to Rio.

This is a lean hotel in a good location. The rooms and bathroom are a bit small.

The service was prompt and friendly, and the location couldn't be better. The staff is multi-lingual and very patient. They offered towels, chairs, and an umbrella for the beach, and an umbrella when it was raining. We would definitely return to this hotel.

Stayed at Mar Ipanema our first night in Rio before moving to a rented apartment. Nice/safe location with drug stores (bought suntan lotion) and secure bank ATM steps from the front door, plenty of close drinking/dining and shopping, short stroll to the beach or the lagoa (lake). Room was clean and comfortable along the lines of hotels in Europe. Pleasantly surprised that our room had a view of both Christ the Redeemer and the lake. Can't say enough about the service at the front desk. All spoke english. Provided complimentary beach umbrella and chairs. I was unsure about leaving things unattended at the beach while we swam, so I had the bright idea of putting a bit of cash, credit card, and hotel key in a ziplock bag, and stowing in the velcro pocket on the outside leg of my swim trunks. The Ipanema waters can be rough, and after a few minutes of frolicking, realized my baggie had been dislodged. Front desk staff (Sotie and Anderson?) assisted in making international call to cancel the credit card. Later, after returning from a stroll into Leblon for dinner, was handed an envelope containing my bruised and battered baggie, with all contents inside. A lady had found it on the beach, saw the hotel key-card, and returned it. Also was granted a late checkout the next morning as we had a few hours to kill before moving into our rented apartment. Complimentary breakfast got the job done. Fruits, breads, eggs, coffee, teas, pastries, cakes, cereal, meats, cheeses, etc., served in street-level cafe with panoramic windows - good people watching as Cariocas begin their daily routines. I can't compare Mar Ipanema to others in the same location and price point, but I would not hesitate to stay there again. Plenty of good things to say. If pressed to find a downside, the elevator was small and slow, but that certainly shouldn't dissuade you from staying there.

The hotel is clean, staff is courteous, and the bed is comfortable. The location of the hotel makes up for all the missing amenities.

All was fine with stay except for breakfast, which was of less than average quality and depressingly the same every day. Service was almost nonexistent and they did not seem to recognize me even after 10 days. On a couple of days, the breakfast was not ready at opening time. To be fair, the restaurant is separate from the hotel, but breakfast is included in the rate and is served at this adjoining restaurant., so the hotel needs to be aware of its deficiencies.

I researched every hotel in Rio and was very happy with chosing the Mar Ipanema for my stay.. Mar Ipanema is at a perfect location. Area is very safe and close to the best bars/resturuants in Rio. The hotel is on the most stylish strip in Ipanema and walking around at night felt very safe The hotel staff was extremely friendly and the free breakfast was excellent. Hotel is in great condition and very clean. All staff spoke great English and many of the guest were American. This is the place to stay in Rio and I plan on returning there next year. Also only two blocks from the best beach in Rio..

We really found the staff very friendly and helpful. The location is unbeatable in upscale Ipanema. Plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars in the barrio. Most importanty a very safe area. You can hang out at the beach two blocks away into the wee hours safely.

Great location, friendly staff, nice breakfast and clean rooms.

Our room was not vailable for one hour on arrival. We were allocated a room on Level 3 (304) which turned out to be small by comparison to less expensive hotels we had stayed at in Jardins in Sao Paulo (up-market area in Sao Paulo). The lifts in the building are hopeless. The room was just too noisy. From the early hours of the morning the traffic noise was unbelievable! They really need sound-proof glass in the rooms. For what we paid for the rooms were small with barely enough room to store two luggage cases. The breakfast at the cafe downstairs was fair/good although staff had to be asked to arrange for the hot food (scrambled eggs, etc) to be replenished rather than being proactive enough to monitor the servery area themselves (like other less expensive hotels we have stayed at)! If you really want to stay at this hotel, having already been warned, do yourself a favour put up with the poor elevators and ask for a room on the upper levels to avoid the street and traffic noise.

I will certainly stay again at Mar Ipanema. Reception desk was friendly and competent, the room was clean and had mostly all you could need, including free wifi internet. No frills, but just fine for the price. Things they could improve: - Wifi signal was weak resulting in a slow connection - Cleaning staff has this bad habit of talking loud in the corridor, so you are very much part of their conversation, sometimes early in the morning - The safe is not a keypad locking one (some kind of old model with a key you have to ask for at reception desk) - Windows are single pane so you get the traffic noise from busy Visconde de Pirajá avenue. Other than that, all was fine.

My husband had a back injury so we were in the room a lot. So maybe a few more English TV channels would be nice. Only wished it was a bit bigger room.but for non US location found it larger than most. I felt comfortable going out by myself in this neighborhood without him. Lots of nice shops. Htl provided chair/towel for Ipanema Beach within just two blocks.

Don't bother paying extra for a Superior room, like we did. The room we got was about as basic as they come, there was nothing remotely superior about it. When I discussed this with the front desk clerk, he rudely informed me that ours was indeed a Superior room, and that no other rooms were available. However, the hotel has a great location, 2 blocks from Ipanema beach and very close to good shopping and restaurants. Bellhops were friendly and helpful.

Rather small and noisy as it is on a busy street. Clean and comfortable however, with a nice flat panel tv and movie channels. Very convenient, with a very good brewery/restaurant downstairs. You can order food to your room, but cannot charge it to it, which I thought was weird. There was a also a very noisy drain in the bathroom floor, where there was a constant drip, and movement of water in. All in all decent for the money.

Mar Ipanema Hotel is a great place to stay in Ipanema. The location is great close to the beach, restuarants, grocery store, post office, etc. The hotel staff was incredible! They were fantastic in helping me with places to eat, finding the Harley Davidson dealership, buses to Cococanbana, helping me with tours that I booked and where to buy some masking tape to wrap an item I bought that I needed to check in on the plane. No matter what time of day the staff was always gave 100% to help you out if you had a question. I had read on the reviews the staff was very friendly and they are. I was there six nights! If I went back to Rio I would definitely stay at Mar Ipanema Hotel again.
