everything is excellent except the hotel needs to upgrade their coffee maker and hair dryer is so scary to use and very loud. and so as the beddings, it looks so old...

The online photos of the hotel did not match the hotel when I arrived. They were remodeling, but it did not state that in the ad. They were friendly, but I would not stay at this hotel again

Great location, fantastic bar food and easy access from the BART. Typical Union Square SF hotel, the only down side the elevator. Smaller than a closet and seems to be used by EVERYONE in the hotel, including staff.

The room was small but cute, the walls are very thin, could clearly hear the conversation next door to me. It has the typical old SFbuilding charm. Was good for the quick over night stay as I did not spend much time in my room. Would suggest not using the valet as it took 45 mins to get my car in the morning - there is a parking garage at the end of the block that is easy and same price.

Good stay. I recommend the hotel. But two things are needed to improve it: 1- Install anti-noise windows; 2- increase breakfast options.

Unbearable noise pollution , the walls are paper thin and we could hear people snoring in next room. Its was 40 *F and the moisy radiator type heater ( dangerously located 3" from the bed) quit working 2 nights. Never going back to this hotel.

good central location, rates reasonable, would stay again.

Parking is HORRIBLE...Waited 38 minutes to get my car from valet service on the 1st night. On my 2nd night, I waited 25 minutes. Not only did I have to wait to get my car, when I returned to the hotel to park my car, I had to cirlce around hotel 5-6 times to get valet to park my car. I wasted alot of my time over parking issues..

I booked through a website and based on price only. The place is old not vintage. It looks and feels like an old hostel. When I flushed the toilet the water came up and all over the floor. It is loud at all hours. I do not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Hotel Mark Twain has excellent accessibility for union square. It takes 5 minutes to go for union square by walk.

The hotel was in disrepair and though construction was going on- there was dry wall, plastic on everything. The rooms were old and small, and I had requested a wake up call that I never received. Just not good.

When I arrived the concierge was on the phone, but she didn't even look at me or anything for several minutes, even though there was nobody else in line. She then hung up and continued to ignore me while working at her computer. A bellman finally showed up and asked if I was being helped. I said "no" and she then looked up and said it would be just a minute, they were having computer problems. So I sat down and waited for about 20 minutes till that was taken care of. For a 4-night, weekday stay, I was given a room at the back of the hotel with an alley view. I was 4 floors up, but every night, the garbage was collected very loudly for a very long time around 2 am. It sounded like a demolition derby! Our room was cleaned sufficiently, but on two days the maid cracked a window, then re-closed the shutters and left it open. I would find myself freezing late in the evening only to search around and discover why. Then she took our bed covers for no apparent reason and hid our throw pillows in the closet. The room was a lot smaller than it appears on hotels.com, by the way, and the hallways (though thankfully not the rooms) smell of a nursing home. It's also right next to a homeless shelter, and the homeless people in SFO are very aggressive. I went to the bar twice and found the service similarly lacking. One bartender was friendly but she cranked up her rap music from her ipod while I had to watch basketball on TV. I asked her to put on the news or something else (since I was the only one in the bar) and she did so, but kept turning up her music every time a song she liked came on and gossiping loudly with a server over the music. The next day I went back and a different bar tender took about 15 minutes to look at me because he had to input someone's food order at the computer. After doing that, he had to go back to the kitchen for some time (isn't that why they have computer?), and when he finally returned, gave those same customers another round and then asked me what

I chose this hotel for a one-night stay because it was within walking distance of my appointment the next day. This hotel has been refurbished; has excellent accommodations and service; and is reasonably priced. Every effort was made to make my stay comfortable. And I particularly loved the cosmopolitan feel of hearing so many different languages spoken by visitors also using the hotel. I wouldn't hesitate to stay again--although I would ask for a room without a window facing the street which gets a bit loud at night.

We like to be in walking distance of points of interest and this was perfect and reasonablely priced. We took some wrong turns and ended up walking through some seedy territory, but we weren't bothered as a police station is right there. The hotel is a few steps up in class from our normal Days Inn, Travel Lodge stays. No free breakfast, but it's more fun to walk to a local diner to eat anyway. I got a credit for the valet parking, which I wasn't expecting. It was the best place we stayed at in California.

Not a bad hotel for the price. Close to the BART and the wharf. Hotel staff was not very helpful, but the location was great for my stay. I would stay there again.

Despite reading previous negative reviews I decided to give this hotel a try. If convenience to other sites and price were the only factors that I consider when selecting a place to stay, I would recommend this hotel. At the end of the day I usually like to relax and unwind. With the very thin wall, it was not possible due to the noises next door. Laughter and talking continued way into early morning hours. We had a problem with the ceiling fan Saturday night, and when it was reported on Sunday we were told maintenance was not available until Monday. Though there is a homeless shelter nearby, we were not approached. It was easy to change the direction of our approach to the hotel to avoid potential encounters.

I would say this is a good place to stay only for a couple nights. Great central location. Absolute worst bathroom, no room, super small sink.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Mark Twain. Loved that lemonade in the lobby! Nice touch!

The best thing about this hotel is the front desk personnel. They were always helpful, kind, and in good spirits. Everything else was fine-clean and safe. Great for the price.

All in all the hotel is in a good location (close enough to the good parts of SF, you can get to the hotel during the night safely). The hotel staff are very professional and accommodating, and the lemonade/tea in the reception throughout various times is a very nice touch. The down side is the property's status. Run down carpets and bathrooms, thin walls (especially with the street), and not enough heating power for a chilly night. These can be a major drawback if you happen to stay in the room for long periods of time, but if you just need a base for sightseeing, bar crawls and such, this is a very cost-effective option.

My husband and I were recent guest's at The Hotel Mark Twain. When we got to our room we were surprised how small the rooms were. They have a radiator in each room that is VERY hot. I burned myself trying to shut it off. We had two young children with us and the thought of either one of them touching it was too much for us. We checked out early and went to the Hilton across the street.

I chose this hotel because I was attending a conference at the Hilton across the street. It was a nice hotel and the staff we very friendly. The WiFi was fast and easy to use. The room was comforatable and very clean. It is an old building and the shape of the room and closet is a bit strange, but it is well maintained. Our room faced the street so we could hear a fair amount of street noise, but I could sleep through that. Two things that I did not like about the hotel were that the water temperature in the morning was tepid, and the steam radiator was noisy.

The only real negatives were the surrounding neighborhood...bums, lots, just a street over. The hotel is a little older but the service was fine.

Lobby area was fine and restaurant seemed nice, but as soon as I walked in my room I regretted my decision to stay at this hotel. There are spaces between the floor and the wall. The carpet and furniture is very old and worn. The bed was hard as a rock and I wouldn't be surprised if they had bed bugs. The location is convenient, and service was good, but the conditioning the hotel is awful.

The room was very nice and in a great location, the only problem was the maintenance going on starting at around 6:30 am which was done on the weekend and during the holidays. Very frustrating and distracting. I could understand it happening during the week, but really, Sunday morning. Only reason I would not stay there again

Staff very helpful and nice.

Service was good. Front desk staff, excellent! Rooms were outdated, Heating system very noisy, thin wall, could ear people flush the toilet. I would not recommend this hotel, sorry.

This truly was the worst experience I have ever had at a hotel. Well you might enjoy it if you like sleeping with pillows over your head all night. Not only are the walls paper thin that you hear everyones conversation in the other rooms but also on the street. The rooms phone was broken so I couldn't even call the front desk. Which would not even helped probably because they were very unfriendly and not helpful. I was also not impressed at all with the cleanliness if that's what you call it. I would never recommend staying here. Was not worth my money.

Good location just a few blocks from Union Square, hidden away a little with no fanfare but it's a solid Hotel which if you can get it for a reasonable price is recommended. You can tell it's going to need a refresh in a few years but for now it's a solid option for a few days in S.F.

Great service, kamel is the best and very friendly! Only downside was the small rooms

I've stayed here a couple times. The location is decent, but sort of on the edge of the tenderloin, so the neighborhood gets sketchy within a few blocks. The hotel itself is decent, but nothing to write home about. It's definitely older feeling. Also, it was undergoing maintenance while I was there, which was loud and annoying, but probably isn't a permanent condition.

Walking distance to Union Square, the Cable Car, Bart and multiple MUNI stops! 1. Women, try not to stay here by yourself as the surrounding neighborhood to the West and South is questionable during the evening. 2. If you plan on sleeping in it most likely will not happen as you can hear the plumbing of any adjacent room. 3. If you need a large bathroom, this is not the spot for you as this is a refurbished historical building. 4. There is nothing wrong with the size of the rooms, or comfort of the space. 5. The staff are very kind and accommodating. 6. If you are flying the hotel can arrange for a shuttle to pick you up and take you to whichever airport needed for a nominal fee. Overall a good experience.
