Staff seemed inexperienced and not very helpful

Shoddy place, rating too high. Our city view room overlooked the valet and front door, was wrought with noise, smelled of marijuana, and the king bed w as a queen. The shower behind the bathroom door was my personal favorite... The design work/theme and architecture are pathetic.

My husband and I stayed here with our pets two years ago and had a fine stay. Therefore, we decided to stay at the Waterfront Hotel again. Great location, decent value, and pet friendliness all factored in to our three night stay. The night manager that checked us in promised us a pet friendly room. Unfortunately, the floor didn't look like it had seen a vacuum cleaner in months. There was mold in the corner of the bathroom, too. Sorry, but pet friendly room does not equate to substandard living conditions in my opinion. My husband and I went out to eat in the neighborhood (Jack London Square). Not five minutes after we left, I got a call on my cell from the front desk. The night manager reported that our dogs were being a disturbance and we needed to come back. Upon further investigation, the noise had been coming from a pit bull on the same floor as ours, not our chihuahua and Boston Terrier. The straw that broke the camel's back was when the front desk told us we could not leave the hotel room without our pets because we signed their pet policy. We ordered room service that night (and the next morning so as not to leave the dogs alone). We decided to cancel the remaining two nights' reservations and book a room elsewhere. The manager at the front desk told my husband in the morning that all pet friendly hotels in the area make their guests sign the pet policy, and that we would just run into the same problem wherever we go. We have checked in to our new hotel room, and I attest that this chain does not have the same Draconian pet policy that the Waterfront Hotel now has. Glad we moved over here, too...the room is nicer, the price is cheaper, and there's no mold in the bathroom!

The decor of the Waterfront is charming and witty -- maritime posters mixed with old ads for tatoos. Some visitors may find it a bit much, but to me the lively decor and color scheme was a nice contrast to the grey weather we encountered. I think kids would love it. The location is a bit isolated, however, and parking is "valet" parking a nightly charge.

DONT BOOK A STREET VIEW ROOM AS THERE IS A TRAIN WHICH RUNS THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND NIGHT BLOWING HIS WHISTLE CONSTANTLY. WE COMPLAINED AND STAFF MOVED US TO A DIFFERENT ROOM WITH A WATERFRONT ROOM FOR THE SAME RATE!!! VERY HELPFULL ALL AROUND. WOULD RECOMMEND

The Waterfront hotel is delightful. Elegant without being stuffy. Instead of flowers, the foyer had a basket of red apples that were not only edible, but yummy. The pool is non-chemically salt water. The kids loved the place as much as I did.

Only downside were the early morning trains passing by.

Our stay was short but wonderful. Room was spacious, great view and quiet, and we had a fireplace too . Staff was friendly and accommodating and the afternoon wine and cheese by the fireplace in the common area didn't hurt either. In room coffee was a Keurig - great little machine, loved it. The adjoining restaurant/bar, Pearls, was very convenient, and great food too. All in all, we'll be back!

Nearly half the price of hotels in SF and only 15 minutes away...Jack London Square is nice but only a few blocks away, not a good neighborhood. The trains were really noisy, but the front desk had a supply of ear plugs which helped a great deal (they should have given them to us when we checked in). Overall a great stay! And the Oakland farmers market was amazing.

The hotel was very nice and worked well with our San Francisco Giants game. We were steps away from he Ferry that dropped us off and picked us up from the ball field. The bed and sheets were very nice and comfortable. We would deffinately stay again!!

We were going to a concert at Yoshi's, and needed a nearby hotel. This was not only convenient, but a nice hotel. Beds are comfortable, the staff is friendly. We would definitely stay here again.

NO one told me about the extra $20 a day for parking!!

I stay here regularly for business and it a great hotel.

You might think you're getting a good deal, and then when you get there you have to pay an extra 20% to park.

Waterfront in Oakland locates next to Ferry to San Francisco. It's not far from Bart as well. The view is great. The challenges to stay at the hotel are the extra daily charges of parking fee ($20), no refrigerator, no microwave, no breakfast provided by the hotel. There is a movie theater (walking distance from hotel) has Tues. and Sundays all day $5.00 movie. There is Sunday Farmer market right by the hotel (Jackson Square).

The Waterfront Hotel is an older facility, with some upgrades. The setting is great, with views of the harbor, and of course it is close to restaurants, jazz spots, and other attractions at Jack London Square. The ferry to San Francisco is just steps away, and it is easy to walk to old town Oakland. The hotel aims to please and we enjoyed our stay.

The Waterfront on the estuary at Jack London Square in Oakland is ideally located for downtown Oakland and this little slice of beauty on the square. An appealing hotel and friendly staff it is still a journey to top tier hotel. Major downside is how noise/talking penetrates every room - I heard too many conversations that made me blush! My room happened to be next to the stairs and I heard everyone who used them. Otherwise, a good experience and an ideal location in Oakland.

The hotel was very nice and the staff was great!

The staff was very welcoming. The heated pool was excatly the ticket for a weary traveler. We decided to go into San Francisco and Leo (sp?) helped us to arrange a town car for our transportation (our driver was awesome!). And one of Penny's recommendations - House of Chicken and Waffles - within walking distance of the hotel was just the ticket after a night of dancing in the City. Will definitely visit The Waterfront Hotel again.

I am becoming a regular at the Waterfront for my business trips to Oakland. Great, friendly staff, the location is convenient because of the complimentary shuttle service that runs every 30 min both ways. Prompt, curteous service, GREAT restaurant on site, Jack London square is great on the weekend if your travel allows. Highly recommended!

Very nice hotel with great staff - everyone was very friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome.

Stay away from this hotel. It took the Valet close to 20 minutes to park our car (he was also the bell hop), the room was fairly clean but it smelled really musty - like mold. Any noise in the lobby reverberates throughout the hotel, the 2:30 AM drunken gathering in the lobby had us up for hours with no help from the front desk despite 3 calls. Worst of all is the freight train that runs all hours of the night blasting it's horn at the intersection next to the hotel, even with a waterfront room the train sounds like it's running right through the middle of the hotel - the 4:30 AM express train had me out of bed and out of the hotel as fast as I could go - I would never stay here again and couldn't wait to check out

It was great to be looking out to the Bay, and we enjoyed being able to take the ferry across to San Francisco the following morning.

Believe the reviews - the train noise is bad. Its an old hotel, but the renovations make it ok to stay in, if you want to be in the heart of Jack London Square.

Don't plan on sleeping in here. The amount of trains that come by in the morning blaring the horn is absolutely ridiculous. Get the upgrade of the waterfront room if you plan on staying here. It must be the most active railway in the nation. Couldn't believe the trains coming through over and over again...

Make sure if you are making a reservation before April to ask for the water-side, even if it is a bit more expensive. The city-side has a train that runs by all night and blasts its horn. They are soundproofing all of the city-side rooms in March. It's a really fun and nice hotel. The restaurant (Miss Pearl's Jam House) is great w/ great service. Most rooms have balconies as well. Clean and nice place, great staff. I was traveling for work and found the wifi to be good. Definitely recommended.

3.5 stars is about right . For the hotel, maybe 3. The restaurant and bar and room service, all really good, probably justify the 3.5. Service in modes lobby is excellent. Rooms are spacious, but the quality of the experience is much improved with a water view as oppossed to a "city" (parking lot) view. Good restaurants within walking distance along the water. Great value!

We booked the Waterfront Hotel because we were going to a show at Yoshi's and did not want to drive back to San Jose after wards. It was a easy walk to a killer dinner at Bocanova and Yoshi's. It was raining and the valet offered to give us a ride the 2 blocks to the restaurant. The bay view was wonderful in the morning. The trains I had been warned about in other reviews where a non-factor, at least on the bay side. Oh and fried chicken and waffles a block a way was great late night.

One of the Best finds in Jack London Square! The experience that I had from the moment I walked into the hotel, was total satisfaction! The staff was very pleasant and professional.

I didn't think the hotel was much of a value. The room had deferred maintenance. It just didn't feel clean. The hotel products, linens etc were very basic. They didn't even have a shower cap. I had asked for a quiet room, that was not possible, since the trains are less than 1/2 block away and blow the whistle as the cross the intersection. Not to mention our room was close to the elevator, and inconsiderate guests woke us late at night and again early in the AM. The parking is bad. Had I realized where they would leave my car, I would have self parked at the covered parking down the street, and saved my $. I think that the management is fairly new, and I hope that they update and improve the hotel. Noise reducing windows would be a huge plus. On a positive note they did have an iPod connection on the radio....

While the staff was friendly, accommodating, and the hotel was in nice condition the neighborhood was scary. We would not have walked to the neighborhood movie theater or restaurants.

Jack London Square is noisy enough with constant trains and the sound of boat horns. Add in poorly insulated walls and you will also enjoy the sounds of your neighbors talking and an obnoxious elevator who's cables have not been lubricated in decades.

I am a pretty easy going and easy to please customer, but when i see managers be rude to their clientele, I find it offensive. Why manage a hotel if you have no patience for customer issues and can't do the basic thing - be nice!? Besides, the management being less than par to other guests and myself, the staff was helpful and the rooms were clean and comfy. I would have really recommended it, if and only if.... C'est la vie. You win some and LOSE some.

The hotel was relatively comfortable and staff were reasonably pleasant. However, the hotel is located right next to the train tracks and there is no sound proofing or insulation in the hotel. The incessant sound of the trains (which pass a few times every hour throughout the night) make sleep impossible. I cannot recommend this hotel.
