Great hotel and even better location! The hotel is within walking distance to pretty much everywhere you want to be and it is very reasonably priced. The only downside is that there is no AC... which can make for an uncomfortable night's sleep.

Great little hotel in the old part of town. Room and en-suite very adequate. Ideal for our overnight stay prior to cruise. Definitely would stay here again.

I really enjoyed this hotel. Front desk service was good but my room wasn't ready when I arrived even tho it was after 3pm. Had a drink in the nice bar and only waited 15 minutes for the room. Excellent beds and pillows, haven't slept that good in a long time. I stayed 3 nights and the only thing i didn't like was on my last morning, the older gentlemen running the breakfast bar was curt with me and rude regarding my payment. Other than that, great place to stay. I would go back there if ever in town again.

I am so glad we picked this hotel. It's a really old building and we didn't expect too much. We were lucky, our room was really big and our window faced a small quad so there was no traffic noise. All the people staying here were young or old couples so no worries about stag or hen parties getting in late at night waking everyone up. The decor wasn't modern or anything special but we didn't care - we were only in the room to sleep! At least it was plenty clean enough and the shower was decent. We had late nights and didn't get out of our room til noon or 1pm and even then, when we got in that night we found our room had been cleaned so the maids work later than most other places I've been. The location was nothing short of perfect; 2 mins walk from dam square, 1 min walk from supermarket, 10 min walk down the road from Centraal Station and 10 mins from the dingy red light district - well out of the way but still close enough to visit regularly. Also, it's on a main road so no need for us to risk going up and down dodgy alleyways. Would DEFINITELY stay here again!

We enjoyed our stay here. The room is fairly basic, but was clean and quite spacious. It could certainly use some upgrades, but was just fine for a night or two. Good location.

We came into Amsterdam with very little knowledge of what to see and where to go. In fact we had never really intended to travel there. The hotel location was the best, it was so close to so many things and had all the transportation right at your front door. The hotel was old but very well maintained, clean and had alot of character. Would very much recommend this hotel to everyone.

Nice hotel in the center of Amsterdam friendly and helpful staff lovely old bar with very nice bar staff the only negative thing was the air conditioning didn't work on a hot night so wee had to sleep with window open in the 24 hour party city very noisy outside

close to the tourist district, but rooms are small and the hotel and resturant is very expensive. the main thing I have negative to say is it is VERY NOISY!!! They loaded pallets in a truck right under our room window all night. They threw them in the truck and workers talking and laughing all during the night. We mentioned it to the desk clerk and she said they were expecting more deliveries the next night also. They did change us to another room, but it was even smaller and still noisy. Coming back, we stayed at the Quality INN DAM BY THE AIRPORT. IT WAS HALF THE PRICE, VERY NICE, BIG ROOMS, OFFERED FREE SHUTTLE TO AND FROM THE AIRPORT, FREE BUFFET BREAKFAST, GREAT RESTUARANT, QUIET AND HAD SHOPPING

The location of the hotel is perfect, close to Dam Square and within walking distance of the Central Station. However by international standards the hotel and its restaurant were expensive and for the quality of both one felt that standards could be higher.

Very nice place to stay during vacation in Amsterdam. Everything is so close. You don;t need the tram or any other kind of transportation. Room are quite big an quite compering to other hotels in Ams.

It was pretty close to everything which was great- however the room was a bit cold and it seemed like there was only a building temperature and we were not able to make it warmer. I actually slept with my feather down jacket for the beginning of two of the nights and they did not have extra sheets. It got warmer later, i guess they don't turn on the heat until a certain time. They also had free lobby internet which was great. The front desk was also very helpful. We might stay here again.

Overall, this is... or should be a great hotel. Decent location, good history, traditional, great bar etc.. However, our room itself was more like a 2 star than a 4 star. Cold, not cleaned properly, badly furnished, very 70's looking. Saying that the hotel was being refurbished so we'd be willing to give them the benefit of doubt! Would we stay here again... Yes we'd give it another try if we came to 'Dam' again! Great city, nice people and Humphrey's restaurant is fantastic and only 2 mins from Die Port van Cleve hotel.

Walking distance from Central train station. Really down town. Convenient distance from Schiphol Airport; 15 min by train plus 10 min walk. Friendly staff prepared to help. Nice restaurant with good breakfast.

We were pleased with the location, but our room smelled of sulfur, there was alot of noise at night, our early wake up call never came and the hotel resturant has a poor breakfast and over priced.

This is my second stay at this Hotel. It is well located, about ten minutes walk from Central Station. Right next to the Magna Plaza shopping Center, The Dam Square right across the street, and the Red Light District at about 5 minutes walk. Therefore it's all about location, i would recomend this Hotel based on location.

This site of the original Heineken brewery is a stones throw from the Royal Palace, Dam Square, Damrak, and shopping boulevard. A perfect launch point for museums and galleries. The key is to advance book the breakfast buffet at check-in for a discount. This buffet is fantastic. Bathtubs are so spotless they welcome you to jump right in. Flat screen TV and elevators in lieu of the crazy canal house stairs were nice to have.

Overpriced. Not sure how this can be a 4* hotel. Everytime we needed something, we would be left queuing at the reception desk for at least 15 mins (usually listening to others complaining about their rooms).

The Hotels Location is amazing, walking distance to most of the attractions. The hotel is very old, and well i guess could use some renovation. The staff are friendly. The only problem i had was that the rooms were small and the whole hotel is really old. If you are looking for just a place to sleep and do not care about how the room looks, then the location is excellent.

This is a wonderful hotel. It is close to everything, is very clean and comfortable, and has all of the ammenities. The staff was very helpful and friendly. We found it to be very quiet - no crazy, loud people running the halls, or anything like that. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Amsterdam who wants a safe, comfortable place to stay.

The hotel was wonderful. Staff was very helpful, breakfast was good and the hotel was located in the perfect spot. The room was small but didn't spend much time in it. Too much to do and see.

1. Wifi didn't work in the room I was initially given. 2. The manager was not helpful and was completely aggravating to deal with 3. my initial room smelled like the inside of a commercial kitchen due to the fact it was located right above the kitchen and that was the view from my window. 4. While in the room I would hear the kitchen staff that was standing below the window talking in dutch. 5 No A/C in the rooms 6 The restaurant connected to the hotels was good 6. Then when checking out their credit card machine wasn't working properly and even after I called and my credit card company told them there was nothing wrong with my card they want me to pay some other way.

You can't do better in Amsterdam than this. But there is no A/C if it's unusually hot.

Die Port Van Cleve Hotel is great! We stayed for two nights. The room was clean and the bed was comfy! The front desk people were helpful and friendly. The location is amazing as you can walk everywhere. There is a grocery store very close by and a great vegetarian restaurant. The hotel bar was nice as you can sit outside and relax! Try some of their Drjopes! Yummy black licorice!

The Port Van Cleve is a nice Hotel. Very well placed. The Dam square at about 50 meters, the Magna plaza next to it, the Central Station at about 15 minutes walk, the Red Light District at 5 minutes walk, indeed very well placed. The room was smaller than i expected but clean. Staff very courteous and friendly. I will defenetely stay in this Hotel again

Great location for all the action. Staff was friendly and helpful but some were kind of seedy. Gave us a room in the core of the hotel away from the noisy exterior parts. Forgot I stayed here 7 years ago and it hasn't gotten any better. Same nik naks in the lobby. Same scary elevator. Same gloomy interior. Breakfast was not included and clerk insisted that $18 US was a great price. Found it strange when he made a copy of my plane reservations. Also strange that they charged us a city tax on checkout (even though room was paid in full)just like last time. Didn't turn on all the lights in room out of fear of what I might see. Lamp mounted on wall fell off when my wife turned it on. If you want a place close to the action this is it. If you want comfort this isn't.

This was the first hotel we stayed at on our 7 country/ 3.5 week tour of Europe. The location of this hotel is amazing. You can walk to almost all of the major tourist sites including the Anne Frank House, the Red Light District, the Central Train Station and it is directly across the street from Dam Square (I would recommend doing a one-day hop-on-hop-off tour to hit the few remaining sites that are a little too far to walk to, like the Van Gogh museum). The outside of the hotel is beautiful, but the inside is a little shabby. The rooms and bathrooms were clean, but dim, with bits of peeling wallpaper and itty bitty windows. Don't be surprised by the split level rooms (the bed and tv etc are four steps down from the bathroom and door). Overall, I would stay here again simply because the staff was very pleasant and helpful (they printed out maps for everything we needed, explained how to use the public transit and gave great directions) and the location was very central. If you aren't carrying too much baggage, you can easily walk from the central train station to this hotel. It is about a 20 minute ride from the airport (we took a shuttle for about 14 euro each, but were later told that the tram is very easy to use from the airport).

If you are looking to be in the center of activity you will like the location. I was looking for a place within easy walking distance of everything and this was a perfect fit. The hotel itself is a bit run down but that was more than made up for by the staff which was amazing. They were uniformly helpful and friendly. if you don't plan to spend time in your room, this may work for you.

The room was larger than any that I stayed in during a trip to multiple cities in Europe. Not large by American standards but not tiny. The location was within easy walking distance of the train station and the tram stopped right in front of the hotel.

It was a very clean hotel. The staff was great ad the location was central near the museums,Anne Frank House,other tourist attractions and train station.

The tram stops at the front door of the hotel. This means you can get to any part of the city in a matter of minutes with the help of a tram map. The hotel offers a nice buffet breakfast. It is offered for a special rate for guests. This special rate offer is based on guests taking breakfast every day of their visit. In other words if you agree to the special buffet rate you are authorizing them to bill your room a daily breafast charge even if you skip a morning. fyi....

hotel is great good location, rich history built in 1869 and was heineke brewlry. good food 5min from train station tram #5 20min from airport be train. KLM has a van that take you to the hotel. you cannot go wrong with this hotel..

This is great location, And this hotel has a rich history, it my be older building, but in 1869 it was the first Heineken brewery . Rooms are great, the bathroom has a deep tub. And tram stop is just out the door. From the rail-station take the # 5. till you see a big church on the left the hotel is just across the street. You will be happy with this hotel.

I was satisfied with Van Cleve; room was typical european central city room (beds fit in the room, small desk, not crowded but not large) and the staff was strikingly pleasant. of course no ice or fridge. Weekday price was good, weekend price was high.

The location is very convenient to all tourist destinations. Our room was very small, but perfectly adequate. Staff is friendly, but they often seem a little confused, and they gave us erroneous directions to a restaurant that should have been easy.

We walked in as the maid services was taking a bath towell, and wiping the glasses on the desk with it. I asked him if that was they always did, not put out clean glasses, he said yes. I looked around the cleaning room, no evidence of clean glasses any where. I wonder how many people drank out of the cup before us? I almost threw up when I saw that. Also the restrauant, if you go there, the service is terrible, you will see there usually only 2 or 3 people in there at any one time. Looks very nice. But when you sit for at least 10 minutes waiting for someone to come to wait on you, that is way too long. Location was good.

This hotel is in a great location in the center of Amsterdam. You can walk almost everywhere, or jump on a trolley in front of the hotel. The room was very tight. We had 2 twin beds, but not much space to walk around or put the suitcases on the floor, and there was little closet space. The bathroom was excellent, clean and spacious. Street noise made it hard to fall asleep. Breakfast was very good and so was the restaurant. I would ask for a more spacious room next time.

Wonderful hotel, highly recommended.
