Great location, easy walk to shops, restaurants and train even with a 4 year old and stroller! Staff was friendly, helpful and welcoming, even to my daughter. they even arranged a treat upon our arrival, child sized slippers and child's toothbrush/paste set. My daughter keeps asking to go back! Only issue mentioned by other reviewers was the shower. Had a superior suite and there was no way to stop the flooding onto the floor, but we made it work in the tub. This is not an ultra modern or sleek hotel, but a classic with outstanding service.

Quaint hotel situated conveniently close to all the sights. Hotel staff were very nice and polite. General cleanliness is good, overall looks a bit dated, but still quite nice. Had a great weekend and enjoyed the stay.

This is possibly the best hotel I've ever visited in terms of service and attentive personell. EVERYTHING could be done in order to assure the comforts of our stay, absolutely everything, best service ever. And although I've seen a few other hotels that could perhaps be a small fraction better looking (not many though), all in all the great service of Hotel Excelsior Ernst makes this the best hotel experience ever. And I will stay there on my next visit to Cologne in a heartbeat. Note: breakfast is expensive and should thus be much better. But it was fine, although by no means great.

This is definitely NOT one of the nicest hotels in Germany, as many travel guides will have you believe. The location IS phenomenal, so if that's all you care about then this is the hotel for you! I had many gripes about the property, though. Problem 1: They still use actual keys for the hotel room and they will only give you one key. This was a problem for my husband and I as we were not doing the same things while staying there. Problem 2: The room was dirty. Very dirty carpet and dirt smudges on the doors and walls. Problem 3: Cheap furniture and drab room. I expect to have a room that was obviously designed by a professional when staying at a five star hotel. Problem 4: There was no heat available in our room (they wheeled in a space heater for me!) and there was a tacky window air conditioner unit blocking my view. Problem 5: Nearly killed myself twice getting out of the bathtub that was elevated to a dangerous level. There is no shower curtain on the tub, so you completely flood the floor every time you shower, which makes the bathroom even more hazardous. Other than that, the bathroom was clean and spacious.

Just a great hotel. Staff was incredibly professional. Would stay again in a heartbeat. Worth the $, in my opinion. I wish we could have stayed there for more than one night. Cologne is amazing - happened to be there for Christopher Day Parade - great energy as a result.

Excellent hotel in brilliant location right opposite the cathedral and within a short walking distance of railway station. We asked for a quiet room and were delighted to be given one - which was indeed quiet, despite the central location of the hotel. Staff were friendly but not overpowering - you really felt that they wanted you to enjoy your stay. We had dinner which was expensive but an experience. The wine list is very impressive but we managed to find one within our budget.

I like the hotel from the start. Great first impressions. Good staff. Car was taken and parked for me no hassle... no hidden charges. Free mini bar with the room - thats always nice - And the staff were very courteous and helpful. The only drawback really was that the room was very warm. The air conditioning needs to be looked at. And the controls on the wall are not very clear how they operate. Seems a bit antiquated, and the air conditioning unit was also quite loud. When I opened the window instead - the church bells from the cathederal then woke me up at 7am and they rang consistently for the next 3 hours on and off. I couldnt close the window because the room was way too warm... this is my only problem. Everything else was perfect. I didnt bother reporting it at the time as I was only staying for one night, but if it was more than this I would have made an issue of it. All in all I would recommend it. On a weekend trip it is a great place with a great location and the rates were good value when I booked in late April 2011.

Fantastic hotel - would recommend to anyone. All the staff were extremely pleasant and would always have a smile and a hello for you. Nothing was too much trouble. The room was superb and very clean. It was very large and included a free mini bar. Location is perfect - 2 minute walk from main train station, across the road from the cathedral and a five minute walk to the main shopping area. Breakfast was expensive but there are plenty of cafes nearby so this was not a problem. As we did not have any meals at the hotel we cannot comment on the quality of the food. We will definately stay here again. First class staff, first class service and first class hotel.

The hotel is fantastically situated just across the road from the cathedral. We caught the train from Dusseldoref and walked to the hotel literally 50metres way. Wifi is free in the business centre, drinks are free from the bar fridge, our room was quite, there are plenty of nearby restuarants. We went to Cologne for the Christmas markets which were fantastic and even better within easy walking distance of the hotel. Iwould happily stay here again and recommend it to friends.

Excellent location, great and friendly staff. Free internet was great bonus. Pillow selection could have been better. Outstanding amenities including free mini bar. Best location in Cologne, directly across from the Dom Cathedral and major shopping area and restaraunts and walking distance to the train station

Awesome hotel. We were treated very well. The hotel staff bent over backwards to please us. Everything in the mini bar was complimentary, including beer! Free internet in buisness center. great location. We came in on the train and walked to our hotel. It is directly across the street from the magnificent Dom Cathedral and across the street from the shopping area. Plenty of restaraunts nearby. My only complaint was that we did not have a room with a view and we were in the older section of the hotel. they should place their suites in a better location. My daughter had a superior room and I swear it was better than our suite. The beds could be better, not very comfortable and a better pillow selection, but for the most part it is a 5 star hotel.

Excelsior Hotel Ernst was first class from top to bottom. It is perfectly located next to the Cathedral Dome, train station, and city center. There are other nice hotels in the area but none can match the elegance, style and service of the Excelsior. Upon my early arrival, the front desk manager accommodated my request for an early check in so I could freshen up and get over to the convention center. The room was nice but dated so when leaving I asked for one of the newly remodeled rooms. Fabio later came through and personally took me to my new room. This room (#425) was one of the best rooms I have ever been in from “top to bottom”. DB (Baton Rouge, LA.)

I can't say enough good things. My only suggestion is that you bring a significant other. I stayed with my best friend and found it a bit too romantic.

Most old-school luxurious Hotel in center of city within walking distance of all main attractions. Make sure you request your room in the new wing as this will make the difference in your stay at this hotel, specially during hot days of summer, since the older outdated rooms only have ventilation and no a/c. By the way: if you want the best upscale German food of the city, you don't have to go anywhere, as there is the Hanserstube" in-house, which is excellent!!!!

This hotel was absoutley incredible! Location, appearance, ammenities, room size, everything was simply outstanding!

Great location

Das Hotel liegt direkt neben dem Dom, zwei gehminuten vom Hauptbahnhof und eine Haustür von einem tollen Brauhaus entfernt. Der Service lässt keine Wünsche offen. Wir wurde herzlich empfangen und persönlich aufs Zimmer geführt. Das Zimmer war sehr geräumig und mit allem ausgestattet was man braucht. Die minibar wird täglich kostenlos aufgefüllt! Der Zimmerservice kommt gleich zwei mal täglich vorbei. Super sauber und alles in einem guten Zustand (bis vieleicht auf den Teppich, der schon ein paar Jahre auf dem Buckel hat). Falls ich mal wieder in Köln bin, ist klar wo ich übernachte!

Hotel très bien placé, employés très efficaces. Seul bémol, les chambres donnant sur la rue sont un peu bruyantes… c'est dommage car il est vraiment très très bien, mis à part ça…

Dagje naar de Kerstmarkt geweest in Keulen. Hotel Excelsior ligt aan het domplein, hartje Keulen. Prachtig hotel met zeer vriendelijke medewerkers. Zonder vragen een upgrade gekregen naar een junior suite. Absoluut een aanrader dit hotel.

Otroligt vänlig och hjälpsam personal, och läget är fantastiskt......kommer defenitivt att besöka detta hotell igen :-)

Alles tip top - und mein Wiederkommen ist sicher garantiert. Alle meine Extrawünsche wurden zur vollsten Zufriedenheit umgesetzt und ich wüsste nun gar nichts, worüber ich motzen könnte - was bei mir schon recht selten vorkommt. Ausgesprochen freundliches Personal. Die Lage des Hotels geht nicht besser. Super bequeme Betten.

Nice hotel but the question is: is it a five star hotell if you dont have Wifi-access and hot water in the shower.. not in my oppinion. And when I complained about the water they did not do anything to compensate me.. that is definitely not five star manners. Not worth the money in other words.

Mycket bra service. Fina sängar. En av ingångarna till det stora parkeringsgaraget vid domkyrkan finns på andra sidan gatan.

Vorsicht- e gibt noch viele unrenovierte Zimmer, die von Ausstattung und Standard den heutige Ansprüchen und dem Prei nicht entsprechen!!! Unbedingt auf ein renoviertes Zimmer bestehen!!!

Ligt letterlijk tegenover de Dom, op loopafstand van het Centraal Station. Parkeren in de parkeergarage aan de overkant van de straat (of valet parking). Bijzonder vriendelijk personeel, gezellige pianobar, ruime kamers met een heerlijk klassieke uitstraling. Erg schoon, zeer goed restaurant en eigenlijk niets om op aan te merken. Absoluut een aanrader

The Ernst Hotel is in a prime location in Cologne, right next to the cathedral, a few meters away from Cologne central train station and within walking distance to the Rhine and the historic old town. The rooms are comfortable, mini-bar included and excellent service from the hotel staff, which is, by the way, multi-lingual: there were staff speaking not only English and German, but also Portuguese, Spanish and French. This was my third stay at the hotel and I strongly recommend it!

Vi försökte hitta ett ord för detta 5-stjärniga hotell och kom fram till anrikt, det är ett hotell med anor. Det må vara 5 stjärnor men nybyggda hotell med 3-4 stjärnor slår högre med tanke på standard/inredning. Rummen är stora och rymliga, personalen servicemindedn som sig bör. Frukostpriset på 27 Euro är inte försvarbart. Jag ger det centrala läget 6 stjärnor! Tar ca 10 min att komma till mässan som ligger på andra sidan vattnet. 1 min så är du på gågatan i city.

Een mooi hotel met uitstekende serviice. De ligging is optimaal .Behalve het geluid van de kerkklokken, wat wij helemaal niet storend vonden,een en al rust.. De service is van hoog niveau en attent.. Je krijgt het gevoel dat je echt welkm ben!
