I booked the room 3 mos. in advance for New Year's Eve and received confirmation after monies were withdrawn from my account. In September I received notice from Hotels.com that this hotel was unable to accept my reservation, and to please contact them immediately. Curious, I called the Riverside whereupon I was told they were closed for business by the NYC Licensing Board. Luckily, Hotels.com handled this matter very courteously and efficiently, finding another (even much better) room for us at the Milburn Hotel for NYE with less than 3 weeks notice! The clerk at the Milburn was aghast when I told him of our original booking and said he had received many guests with nightmarish experiences who had fled from the Riverside. The clerk also said that one must do their own due diligence and call the hotel directly and ask to see the room before booking. If they resist, then that is not the lodging for you. I highly recommend that you spend a few more dollars and stay the nearby Milburn Hotel if you can - the private bathroom and kitchenette alone is worth it! And, of course, I highly recommend Hotels.com. Thank you, Hotels.com!!

The Hotel Riverside Studios in New York is not clean and not kind. I do not want to recommend anyone. I regreted to stay there.

Having stayed on the Upper West Side in NYC and knowing the community and it's reputation I thought I would be getting a clean and safe but bare bones room on Riverside Drive at a great deal from Hotels.com. First, my Taxi driver would not go to that dead end..... When I walked in the lobby I saw large full trash cans, paint buckets and nothing else? I found an attendent who signed me in and gave me a key. I was given directions to walk thru a very small long hall, go thru a door, another small long hall and through another door and I could find my way up to the third floor? I only saw a maintanance man as I made my way and I was so afraid I did not dare go up two levels to the 3rd floor!!! I really feared for my safety!!! I wound back thru the halls and doors and gave the key back to the desk clerk (who did not seem suprised that I brought the key back). This facility is nothing but an accident waithing to happen.

only good thing about this place is its location ! Rude unhelpful staff , horrible dirty old place - a hostel would have been a better choice ! Avoid if at all possible

Even considering a shared bathroom and shower, the one bathroom on the second floor did not have operating lights over the sink, only in the shower. The window at the shower in the other shower room was jammed open and made my female friend uncomfortable The window in her room was in a sad state of disrepair..

Although the hotel looks like it has not work done since 1945...which was not a major problem ..what was need was proper vaccuming of the rooms under the beds and the blinds were beyond dusty and a few of the tubs were so old the paint fell off..I was not expecting the 4 seasons but what i was expecting was a place with so much visible dust and cob webs .. I checked out one night earlier .. jusr because i was sneezing non-stop

We just need to place to lay our heads in a safe enviornment. The room is not a five star but it was clean and safe.

it was the most horrifying hotel i have ever been to. they had no military discounts. no one should ever have to sleep on blood spotted bed sheets or share the same restroom for an entire floor. the staff did not even tell us our room number or what floor or building we would be staying in. we were escorted up to our room without a word. the man at the front desk was very rude and the place just looked like it was never cleaned.

Starting with the positives: the employees were helpful and kind. The neighborhood was great and quiet. But sleeping in this room was like sleeping in a dirty closet. The carpet looked very nasty and the walls were pretty scuffed up. I was happy with how well they kept the bathrooms clean as they are shared - this made sharing a bathroom less nasty. This place really should be categorized as more of a hostel. There is no signage other than what you see on the awning photo. There is no lobby and in the entry way there were some unsavory characters hanging out. Wouldn't stay again- worth it to spend another $100 and stay elsewhere.

I knew what I was getting into--that the bathrooms would be shared and in the hallways. The place was clean but reminded me of an old college dormitory. My biggest concern is that there is access to the hotel from the street from a door that is not locked or monitored. For security reasons-I would not stay there again. But for a two start hotel it was clean and has a TV phone refrig and sink in each room.

Among the highlights of our stay at this hotel are: bed bug crawling over my book while reading in bed at night (and yes, I know how to identify a bed bug, Cimex lectularius, and this was one); rooms have a distinct cellar quality to them; elevator smells like generations of roaches have lived there for a looooong time; clogged shower (i.e., over the ankles in the previous user's used water, yikes); clogged toilet; bathroom where someone had used towels (and I do not mean paper towels) as toilet paper and then left them in the trash bin....go figure. It is certainly an experience.

It was interesting staying here, the staff was so helpful but the building needs some upgrade. It's great for a few nights. My friends and I had a great time there. For a last minute booking this hotel saved our staying in NYC.

The room was cleaned daily. Shared bathrooms were grungy at best. Heat with the snowstorm was minimal. Location is great. There are probably better options in the same price range if you need cleanliness and upkeep. A former single room occupancy hotel with lots of residents leftover from that time. We spent almost no time in the room. So it works if you only sleep and bathe carefully there.

I cannot even believe that hotels.com would list this hotel on their site. The mattresses have plastic wrapped around them...the rooms stink and are dirty. The bathrooms are ROACH infested. I took a shower and counted at least 20 roaches crawling on the walls and the floors. I slept in my CLOTHES and wouldnt stop on the floor without shoes. There is no internet and the first room I checked into the tv and phone didnt work.

If you're on a tight budget and need something cheap i would recommend this hotel. Definitely not a five star hotel let alone a 2 star hotel but it will work for short trips. Nice neighborhood and easy access to subways food shopping and site seeing.

ts the most disgusting place i have ever stayed ..We booked for 5 nights only stayed the one night . As i walked into the front door my face dropped , that holiday excitement disappeared.The entrance was dirty ,then turned right into reception it was worse .At this point i still had hope. When we walked into the room ,i cried . I was born and raised in Africa ,where I have seen some terrible living conditions .What I saw was shocking .The sink , chair ,carpet ,bed linen and walls were dirty ... Then when i went into the bathroom ...oh my gosh ! The thought of it makes me want to cry again. We checked into Hotel Mayfair the next day, it was beautiful.and to think there was just a £100 difference. DON'T STAY THERE .

Since the express train stops at 72nd, this is a great location. The neighborhood is fantastic. However, the hotel is rather grungy. Bed is awful, the sink is gross, and the phone doesn't work. I also never got my room serviced or cleaned. However, the room has a mini fridge.

Hotel is in poor repair. In bathroom, no rubber mat in tub, no mat when leave shower, no rail to hold on to when getting into or out of shower, telephone did not work, walls in halls were moldy. I had wanted inexpensive, but didn't expect this to be so bad.

This hotel almost has the feel of a hostel. Fairly clean room but I really think that sharing a bathroom is a bit much!

I would recomend this hotel for NY Lovers that spend only sleeping time in the hotel. The place is huge and kind of confusing. Some of the floors have an uneven floor, what is kind of scaring, the elavator is really old and stinks, but besides the look and the smell there were no bugs or roaches. It is a shared bathroom, it was pretty clean but I always were sandals to shower. The room was really small, what I didn`t mind because it was just me, but the bed was really small and noisy, everytime I moved I would wake up with the noise... I was a different experience because I have ever never had to share a bathroom in a hotel, but for the price and location it was ok, it could be better. I would recomend this hotel for people that spend just enough time in the room, I was gone from 9am to 12am, but if you like to laydown and watch a movie on you hotel room I would not recomend this hotel.

No matter the location, I still think this hotel is overpriced, given that you have to use a communal bathroom. Once I knew I had to bring flip-flops, it really wasn't as bad as it could have been. Never had to wait for the shower, and though unbelievably narrow, it was serviceable. There was a second bathroom in the hall (further down) that was slightly wider. No counters in the bathroom, so bring a bag or something to put your toiletries in. Shower was actually quite hot! Room and bathroom were freezing--I closed windows in the bathroom to help the cold. Turned the radiator open in the room and nothing happened, but the heat did kick on in the middle of the night. Was surprised to have clean towels, mini soaps, and 2 rolls of toilet paper--we never lacked, as the bathroom had plenty, and so I never needed the fresh rolls they gave us. The table lamp did not work, and so we only had the harsh overhead light....but the room was clean and big enough. Not a bad place from which to go sightseeing, but just don't book this "hotel" for the ambience or accommodations. Book it only if this is the best you can afford, and realize that you get what you pay for. We did not get lost (maybe because I knew from other reviewers to pay close attention to the directions) and the hallways were not dark or unsafe. I saw no bugs (roaches or bedbugs). It could have been much worse! At least we knew what to expect!

Hotel Ricerside Studios was a standard hostel-type accomodation and pretty good for the price. Ammenities were simple and the housekeeping could have been better but the location was great. Within walking distance of Central Park and the Theatre District, HRS is in a good neighbourhood and at the end of a quiet street. Great if you are on a budget but probably not what you want if you're looking for something comfortable and relaxing.

This place was an amazing deal for the price and location. I'd highly recommend it for anyone traveling to NYC on a budget.

For the price it's fine. The room was clean and the bed comfortable.

Pros: The hotel is in a great location and the neighborhood is great. Cons: The hotel is like a maze and the room is hard to find. Inside the hotel it's dark, damp, and smelly. The room is small and the bed is very uncomfortable. It has plastic wrap underneath the sheet and the cover is dirty. The worst thing is that you have to share bathroom with people on the floor, and the bathrooms are filthy. If you are looking for hostel-like place to crash, this might be good, but just be prepared for its low standards.

Me and my boyfriend stayed here for 8 nights, because we had to pay everything in advance...if we'd gotten a chance to only pay 10% and then take a look at the room, we would have NEVER stayed! First of all, the building is in terrible condition with crooked floors, it's dirty and not at all maintained. The AC was under the window, and there were holes directly to the outside. Every morning around 7 am, there was a terrible noise going on outside for 1 hour, but we don't know what it was since we couldn't see trough the dirty window! There were holes in the linen (because of cigarettes and because of being really well-used), and a constant cigarette smoke smell. This place should not be on hotels.com. Don't stay there!

The shared bathrooms look like they've never been cleaned. The sheets look nasty too. The beds are hard and are equiped with 2 thin sheets. The whole place was a dump. Its nice that its close to the Museum and to Central park but its not worth it.

I woulf only go there if I had absolutely no choice. The place is smelly, paint is chipping. The bathrooms are new but there are 2-3 bathrooms per floor which everyone shares. No internet, and the price was on the low side but nowhere low enough that you expect staying in a place that is more like a poorly maintained hostel than a hotel. I've stayed in several hotels in Africa, and they were all much better than this one in Manhattan

Old and ugly place to stay. Foot odor in the rooms. Towels and sheets clean everyday. Good location for low budgets. If you cannot afford somewhere better you'll have to resign yourself with this type of accomodation in NYC.

Hotel is in a great location. The staff is very friendly and helpful, but the place is not kept in good condition and it's not clean.

The hotel was dark, dingey, smelt unbelievably bad and was just downright awful. The only saving grace was the good location. I only stayed 2 nights and I dreaded going back to the hotel both nights. The first night I arrived back I was greeted by a mouse at the front door and a cockroache on my room door. Had I had enough money, I would have changed hotels, unfortunately I couldn't. The bedroom was dirty and the bathrooms were awful - I resorted to visiting a friend's hostel to shower there!! I cannot comment on the staff as I did not have enough interaction with them to make comment. I can honestly say I will never go back!!!

Hotel was bad a real dump dont stay there for any reason "any reason" new york was great as usual.

Pretty funky, but clean, inexpensive and the people were friendly and helpful. Don't forget your flip flops for the shower - it reminded me of a college dorm!

Other than a reasonable room rate, it was awful. Horrible, terrible, nasty, smelly, dirty, disgusting, and scary. Room didn't even have a bathroom. It was a shared bathroom down a long dark hall like a European Hostel.

+ Located a few minutes walk from Central Park and the Subway that takes you through out the City. - Condition of the overall 'hotel' is poor - my room was fine but I did not use the shared bathroom the whole three nights I was there. Would recommend as a cheap weekend getaway to explore the city but by no means expect a luxury hotel - think more like a private hostel type room.
