Tiny room, hotel impossible to find (no such address--go to Rio Hotel & enter tiny alley to your right). Staff nice, helpful, breakfast pretty minimal ( fruit cocktail? Really?) next time we will stay off island in Lido--many others had similar exp w their hotels.

Rooms were clean, breakfast was very average. Good location.

This hotel was very conveniently located to the Duomo and had secure (but not free) parking right next door. It was not easy to find from the autostrade primarily due to all the one way streets. We stayed in a quad room which was comfortable and clean. We ran out of hot water showering at 9AM, but got up earlier the next day and had no problem. Included breakfast was nice although I thought optional charge for a hardboiled egg was a bit much. Everything you want to see in Florence is an easy walk and very close to all sorts of restaurants. Staff was very helpful, but i just can't give all top marks to a hotel which still charges for internet. There's tons of free conectivity at nearby coffee shops so why charge? That said, we'd stay here again without hesitation.

The rooms and Hotel were fine. Descent value for the money. The Breakfast was a little weak with bread and croissants that were not fresh. Overall, it was an OK experience. Beautiful bar/restaurant on the terrace with a great view. I would probably stay there again.

Great location, nice room and a good breakfast. Staff was very helpful.

the shower was EXTREMELY SMALL and the door was broken and it is 10 euro for wifi for 24 hours. very expensive internet considering it's a 4 star hotel

Not quite what I'd expect from a 4 star hotel. The room (no 2) was small - no fridge or tea/coffee facilities and the double bed was two singles pushed together. However, the worst thing was the noise from outside at around 2am plus late/early arrives by other guests trundling wheeled cases along the tiled corridor outside which was next to main lobby. That said, I enjoyed the stay.

The room was more than sufficient, but the service should be brought into the 21st century. They did everything they could to discourage the use of a credit card. The internet cost was 10 Euros per day and they wouldn't accept a credit card for it and to make matters worse the strength of the signal was sketchy. When I checked out I had a bar bill that initially they were not going to accept a card for because it was just under 20 Euro. When I told them I did not have enough cash to cover the charge they accepted the card. Not a friendly staff.

We spent one night here and would return again with pleasure. Lovely, if small, room with large door opening onto tiny terrace with a special view of the Duomo. Very much enjoyed the roof-top bar, again with that spectacular view. Have a Negroni! Well-made. Parking immediately next to the hotel. Bed was comfortable, shower was fine, room was clean and inviting. Staff was very helpful with one small exception. A few days before check in, we asked the clerk to make a reservation to visit the Uffizi first thing so we could avoid the lines. Seemed like that slipped past whoever was supposed to handle that. So we skipped the Uffizi and strolled around Boboli Gardens, Ponte Vecchio, etc. etc. Where can't you find beautiful things in Firenze? We would stay here again without any hesitation.

I loved hotel california and would definitely stay there again. The only complaint I have is that the bed is hard as a rock which made sleeping difficult. I was prepared for this though because I had read other reviews that said the same thing. If they invested in new beds, this hotel would be perfect. The location is awesome. The street is not too busy unlike some other hotels I walked by that are right in the Duomo. There are great restaurants right near the hotel, just a minute walk away. If you dont want to go out to dinner, the hotel restaurant is great. The food and service was great and the view was amazing. If you dont want to pay too much and dont mind a hard bed, this hotel is absolutely perfect.

Expected more for a 4star hotel. Rooms were clean, but looked rather old. Service could be better. Had to go down 4 floors to get a wifi code. Breakfast selection okay. Parking lot right below and right in center of Florence is a plus

Hotel is very close to everything, but getting there by car is a challenge because of the narrow streets and walking zones you have to drive through. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast buffet was very good. We got a room with private balcony which was very nice.

Good hotel. Nice & clean room, comfortable, great location. BUT avoid rooms on the very noisy street side. The breakfast buffet is OK.

Buying an imposing reception desk does not make you a 4 star hotel. The mattress in my room (#4) must be 40 years old. It actually sinks down 5 inches or so in the middle. The neighborhood is extremely noisy well into the wee hours of the morning. Was looking to get dinner at 11pm. The hotel clerk shrugged his shoulders when asked whether something around the Duomo was open. Fortunately this was not my first time to Firenze. Just a stay over after hiking in Cinque Terre - but a good night's sleep would have been nice.

Good Hotel, not great. Very convenient to most tourist sights in Florence. Walking distance to most sights. Breakfast was just so-so. Nice roof-top bar! Parking garage adjacent.

First, this is not 4* as you would experience in US. Location is good, close to train/bus terminal, close to most churches and academia. Room are tiny, but recently upgraded. We had a small balcony, but no view, just rooftop of the surrounding buildings. Small tv, looks like computer monitor. No hot breakfast. One morning we came to have breakfast right after the group of students. It was 8am, but almost no food left, stuff was very slow to bring more food. Have to wait 30 minutes for coffee cups and yogurt. Be very carefull - internet is not FREE. When we checked-in we got the card with wifi code, I asked twice if it was free and receive positive answer. However, when we checked out they charged us $10 per night. They rejected to accept credit cards for city tax and internet charge. I believe it was an owner at front desk. He was quite rude, saying he is not going to pay $3 fee on $10 cc charge. Totally untrue. When I complained that there is no sign about wifi charge. He reply that he is not going to put sign for every bread and cheese and everything else...Extremly rude guy. Not 4* service. Do not recommend if you prefer quility service.

We found this place by sheer luck - we were in Italy for a week and wanted to see Florence, Siene and Rome. I went on-line and, without knowing Florence, I found this place - I picked it in part because of the name. It was a great find - very inexpensive and the location was awesome! The hotel itself was beautiful and the staff were great - very friendly and helpful. Can't wait to go back!!!

hotel is clean,location is good ,close to every where,laundry mart nearby,nice shopping on the same block, but the beds are hard, breakfast is too simple,no hot items.Overall is good.

The room size is reasonable but the hotel do not look like it deserve a 4 star...breakfast is definitely lousy

Not a particularly interesting hotel. Located on the second floor and very difficult to find by car. They advertise parking but it is not on the site - do not recommend booking a hotel in the historic part of Florence if you are driving - many one way streets and pedestrian only streets that the GPS seemed to be unaware of. In the end we hired a taxi to take one of us to the hotel and the other followed by car. Staff was responsive but not particularly welcoming.

The hotel is close to the heart of Florence. The room was decent,but walls were surprisingly scuffed and the shower was the tiniest I have ever encountered. Luckily, I am very thin. I do not think that this is a 4 star hotel, and would rate it 3.5 for the overall rating if that were an option.

We booked very last minute and this was one of the few hotels with availability left. It is a block away from the Duomo on a small side street, however it is the more residential side of the Duomo. Hotels on the other side are more in the heart of the rest of the pedestrian/tourist area. The room was very small for 4 people, but recently renovated and reasonably clean. The bathroom was modern looking with a shower and sink. The A/C did not work properly and the temperature in the room was in the 80s and humid. The staff was not helpful in trying to resolve this. Internet access was charged in 30minute increments at exorbitant rates. Our in-laws stayed at a hotel on the other side of the Duomo for a similar price, but booked with more advance notice. It was worlds better.

This hotel is very well-located within easy walking distance to all the major attraction in Florence. The hotel is clean, the rooms are small but comfortable, and the decor is classic Italian. The people who work at the hotel are very helpful and speak good English, which is a lifesaver for me! I highly recommend staying at the Hotel California.

This hotel is located in a great location between the duomo and the museum that house the statue of David. The room we had was spacious, and included a fresco on the ceiling. The hotel entrance is off a passageway and reception is on the 1st floor. The reception hall is magnificent and so is the roof top bar which has views of the churches dome. You can purchase a bottle of wine for 8-12 euro and watch the sun go down. Breakfasts were typical for the country, with no cooked items but they would cook eggs to your liking for a fee. We really enjoyed this hotel, and the staff were very helpful on a number of occasions such as helping us add money to our italian pay as you go phone sim card. I would highly recommend this hotel.

I'm not sure yet how the star rating works here in Italy. However, I do know that I have stayed in nicer hotels with less stars. We choose Hotel California because of the low rate, high rating, and location. The location was the only plus in the end. Our rate was almost doubled with the addition of 2 children. Also, the bathtub was falling apart and had tape on it. The mini fridge was more like a lunch box (did not keep things cold). Don't get to excited about the included breakfast (if you opted for it)...not that great. You'd be better off hitting a cafe on your way out. Oh, and P.S. the hotel starts on the second floor and you have to pay for an additional parking cost (per day). All in all, the hotel was not "horrible"; just way below expectation for a 4 STAR rating.

The hotel could not have been MORE conveniently located. The Duomo was a block away!! We had a quadruple for two parents and two middle school boys. That meant four single beds in a row w/ very little walking space. We should have bitten the bullet and booked two rooms at the larger expense. Breakfast was good, but not great. It was on a somewhat busy sidestreet with a very nice restaurant.

The staff was inefficient. We were asked to let our keys in the front desk every time we left the hotel (I still don't understand why)and were assured that always would be a staff present do give us the keys back which didn't really happened. The hotel is in a very busy and noise neighborhood and since we stayed in a front room and the wood shutters did not close we could not had a good night sleep. The bathroom curtains were filthy with mildew.I had go ask the front desk to change them, instead they tried to clean with very little success. And towels were not made of terry cloth instead was this thin waffle pattern cotton.

We stayed at HC for one night during a promo-priced period. We suspect this used to be a three star hotel and has renovated to be ungraded to a four star hotel. Some of the renovation work was still going on during our stay. At the price we stayed, it was a monster deal. The deal aside, the hotel was very clean - from the lobby to our room- and the staff was professional. The architectural aspect of the hotel could be best described as classy. The best part of the stay may be it's close proximity to the Duomo and everything else. It's right where all of the actions are at in Firenze.

The staff was professional and extremely prepared for questions. They were informative. The rooms were comfortable and is extremely close to all the local tourist attractions.

Located 2 blocks from the Duomo and so close to the Accedemia museum. When we first got there, the concierge took a little time in getting us situated, but after that, it was smooth sailing. We had a jacuzzi tub which was SO nice.

Those two situations brought the review down to 4 stars for us, along with the pretty pathetic attempt at breakfast. A not-very-wonderful coffee machine and cold meat, cheese and cereal were complemented by milk, orange juice, breads, and vague service by staff. The bartenders at the 'panoramic' bar were OUTSTANDING. The rest of the staff was friendly and nice, helpful in answering questions about trains and restaurants. The location can't be beat: a block from the Accademia and about two blocks from the Duomo on a fairly quiet street (except for the mechanical sanding outside our windows). The other downside were two separate school tour groups that came through over our 4-day stay. Positives: There is a laundromat around the corner, the marble staircase is great, the interior is a riot to wander around, there are 3 separate terraces for guests, the rooms are clean and very comfortable. Ask for a room in the back, though.

Hotel California is very close to major attractions. Everything is within walking distance. Even the train station. We stayed in the newer part of the hotel. Room was great. Bathroom a little small. Breakfast choices were minimal and satisfying. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. They even found me a place for a massage. Check out the 3rd floor terrace at night. Stunning view of the Duomo.

Very helpful and polite staff, spoke english. Clean rooms, and compared to every other hotel we stayed in, HUGE bathroom. For American hotels it was a little above average size, it had a whirlpool/jacuzzi tub that could fit two small people or one average person comfortably. Our room had a balcony with a view of the Duomo which was nice to see at night. There was a hotel bar with a panoramic view on the third floor, so they told us, but we never got around to going up there. They recommended a place for dinner, Yellow Bar if I'm not mistaken; EXCELLENT freshly made pastas and the Calzone was also excellent. The beds were something of an issue but nothing we werent used to by then from the cheaper hotels. The beds were two twins pushed together, and during the night they would slowly drift apart as we toss and turn. If you are a still sleeper, no problem, if not, expect a gap between the beds in the morning. GREAT location, just a few blocks, maybe 10 minute walk from train station, 5 minutes from the Duomo and Academia. Just fantastic, I'd return again.

I did not feel completely safe on this street at night but it was a good location.

It was a perfect location and the hotel was just right for our family of 4. Had a small tight room, four narrow beds for the 4 of us, but the hotel was spotlessly clean. Bathrooms were well appointed and spotless. The shower enclosure was not water tight which took some getting used to. The service was spotty. While Lino was awesome, and most helpful the lady (Danielle) was a bit short. Not so nice. Overall, highly recommend this hotel for - location - cleanliness - value for money

We LOVED this hotel. You couldn't ask for a better location. Right next to the Duomo. We would definitely go back. very clean too.

Very close to all the sights. Breakfast was a little dissapointing, there was a long wait for the coffee machine. Close to the Doumo and all other sites, and lots of restaurants nearby. It was very hot, July and August are not the best months for visiting.
