The location is close to a major railway station. The room is clean, but it is quite small.

we had a very nice room looking out on spencer st it was clean and comfortable and was close to all what we wanted to see and the rates were very resonable we had a great time and will be staying there when we travel to melb again

The bathroom was very small, sink basin very very small, couldnt brush teeth or wash face in any comfort. Room smelt foosty. Shower had NO pressure at all!

Good value for money, just right for staying over between events. Would stay again.

Quiet the gem for those on a budget, wanting a spot of luxury. Great, modern, fresh rooms with all mod cons. Don't be put off by the reception area and the welcome, (both were a bit gloomy for me). It gets better upstairs, which is where it matters.

This was a nice hotel and the location was very convenient for us. After getting off the train it was just a short walk to find where we were staying. The hotel was nice and modern, the room was a reasonable size although the bathroom was tiny. The door was opaque plastic, which slide open slightly when it was closed. Not very private when sharing with a friend!! The plus side to staying here was that although the trams ran straight passed the window it wasn't that noisey with the ear plugs in. The free tourist tram stop was just around the corner and the Immigration museum was about 10 mins walk away. I would consider this hotel again if I was to return to Melbourne. Good value for money, clean and tidy.

We had a double room on the ground floor - older style room. It lacked any hanging space or drawers to keep clothes in. The room needs an update- it was dull and you did not feel like lingering in it. Staff are extremely helpful and friendly - excellent breakfast. Would not recommend the un refurbished double rooms- I found them depressing.

I only stayed for one night, but was very happy with my short stay. I really enjoyed the nice hot water in the shower, a lot of hotels I have stayed at the water seems to go from hot to cold all the time, so that was so great. The check in and check out gentlemen at Reception were very efficient and nice., Very satisfied. Thank you. Anna

Very good location to shopping in central CBD and to transport in street and at Southern Cross station and bus link to airport. The hotel refurbished to a comfortable and clean standard.

Stayed here for the night to attend a concert with my daughter. Close to public transport and the staff were very helpful in giving directions and information about public transport. The room, whilst small, was very clean and comfortable. Probably would not stay for a week, but one or a few nights would be great.

Very happy with our stay. Close to interstate and local train/bus/tram services. A short walk to the city and all the sights of Melbourne.

it was a lovely hotel. the only complaint i have there was no chairs to sit on, just the bed. the cafe down stairs was just lovely the meals were great,and the service was just as good. the only thing was no were to sit only on the bed, which makes it uncomfortable.other than that we loved the stay, thank you.

Overall room was good and clean. Unfortunately the wireless I purchased from reception couldn't reach my room. Also was wright next to a very noisy Backpacker bar where I could hear lyrics from songs, screams and of course the bass till 2.30 am. Friendly staff though though didn't ask how my stay had been. Very close to downtown Melbourne. Stayed there a couple of night later in a more quiet room and had no complaints but room 206 is a no go.

Excellent location for Melbourne Convention Center and Crown Casino.

Pros: very friendly staff, good service, central location, lots of shops and restaurants nearby, clean, modern design. An overall pleasant stay. Cons: rooms are tiny, especially the bathroom. Bathroom sinks are so small it's impossible to use without splashing water all over the bathroom. The internet costs $5 an hour or $15 for 24 hours - not cheap and the connection was quite unstable at times.

Enjoyed our stay here! We were here for a week and found it to be a very convenient location (near trains, trams and close drive to airport). Breakfast was great, too.

This hotel was in a handy location for the bus to/from the airport and the free tram around the city and the Etihad stadium and Crowne Casino. However, the rooms are small, apparently this may be the case for Melbourne. But the bathrooms are tiny. And there is only a frosted glass sliding door between the room and bathroom. There is satellite TV but no movie channel. The air con works well. The front desk sevice is great and there is a cafe and bar on site. All in all an average place to stay.

The only disappointing issue was that one mug was chipped and therefore not very clean.

This is the WORST hotel I've ever stayed in my life!!! Before I booked this hotel, I read some reviews and they mentioned about the room size but it wasn't the size that bothered me.. it was sooooooooo dirty! The room they gave me totally smelled like urine that I couldn't even breathe so I asked the receptionist to change the room and he said it was the cleanser they used.. no it was coming from the carpet! He gave me the spray to cover up the bad odor but it didn't help and it got worse so I went downstairs again and the new receptionist finally admitted that people pee everywhere when they are drunk.. finally they gave me another room but every day I stayed in, their janitor didn't even clean the room/bathroom.. one day she left the dirtiest rag on the bad.. forgot to clean the bathroom .. one more thing.. if you are a little bigger than average joe, you are not gonna fit in their shower.. there's no light so it's dark and it's tiny and water sprays over their tiny curtain that you have no choice but to wet the carpet outside of their tiniest bathroom.. their vanity sink is about 11"x8.5" .. not even big enough to wash your hands. I'm only 5'8" but the bad was so short that my feet were just haning out when I was in bed.. everything was just unbelievably small so unless you are not a dwarf, don't stay here.. trust me.. you are gonna regret here.. it's the dirtiest hotel ever! I can still remember the urine smell AACCKKK

Great locations, minutes from everything in the CBD. small rooms, but that's about the size for most hotels in the area. Friendly service and good food/wi-fi on premises. Would recommend it highly.

I always stay at this hotel when I am travelling alone to Melbourne, but that's because I'm not fussed about swish hotels. This is a decent hotel in a convenient location, at a good price. On this visit I stayed in the ground floor rooms, which are much less attractive than the upstairs rooms. The downstairs rooms are larger, but a bit 'motel'. The upstairs rooms are tiny, but cheerfully/tastefully decorated. I have never tried the bar or cafe at this hotel, as the convenient locations lends itself to easily visiting the CBD bars and cafes. Getting to everywhere from this hotel is very easy - it has a strategic location close to all of the tramlines through the city, and Southern Cross train station is only a short one-city-block walk away.

The hotel is in a great location for south wharf, DFO, Harbour Town, south bank, Crown Casino and was nearby to a city circle tram stop which was convenient. While the room was tiny (a "petite double") it had a nice boutique feel. I found only small things became annoying- the bathroom sink was tiny, the bathroom door was only opaque glass, the pillows were hard, the lifts were extremely slow, there was insufficient room for hanging towels (if you wanted them to dry overnight), hot water in the shower took at least 5 mins and the air conditioning didn't seem to be working properly (and there is no fresh air because the windows don't open). However, the staff were very friendly and helpful in making tour bookings. I would definitely pay the extra $$ to have a bigger room next time though!

Nice hotel, it is not a 4 stars hotel but the price was good, it is in the center and has a very nice and helpful people working in it. worth recommending!

Close to the Southern cross station which is the main station buses stop at from the airport, then a short walk. Free city tram to go into the city, stops just from the corner. clean, chic. no complaints.

I booked this Hotel for an overnight stay only. My room was small, but beautifully presented, quiet, clean and comfortable; minutes walk from Sthn.Cross Station, trams/trains/buses, and comfortable walking distance to shopping, dining and ETHIAD. Reception staff were excellent - polite, welcoming and well presented. In recommending this Hotel to others, my only negative is that the bathroom wash basin (in my room at least) was just not practical - too small, located under a legde which meant you had to bend down quite low to actually get your face over it, lets just say that water did end up on the floor! One other point which some may consider inconvenient was that the only options for sitting were on the bed, on a beautiful, good sized ottoman, (or on the floor) - there wasn't a proper chair of sorts in the room. That said, these for me were just small bumps in the road, which wouldn't deter me from staying here again, I would just make sure I mentioned the bathroom issues if recommending to someone else so they could know what to expect, and decide for themselves. There is complimentary use of a close-by gym for the fitness conscious, I would have taken up this offer had I booked a longer stay, knowing how pricey casual gym visits can be, this would be more than enough to make me forget the downfalls of the tiny bathroom basin. If you don't have too elaborate a toilette routine, and you would like accomodation that is reasonably priced and close to pretty much everything, this Hotel is worth a try!

It wasn't the best room - ground floor, small room, large bathroom which was a bit grimy - looked a bit like a locker room shower, loud from people coming in and out. But it was safe and the staff were extremely lovely.

Rooms are way to small. You could not even get kettle under sink to fill it up, also if you the toilet light on at night you could see the person who is doing there stuff. Beds are way to small as they would have to be to fit into room, if you are average highed your feet will hang out of the bed. I will never stay there again spoiled a great weekend in Melbourne

The hotel was clean, the staff were very nice, but the room was minuture. I had the same size room in New York- you can't compare the cities!

The staff of the Pensione Hotel Melbourne were extremely helpful in getting our room available for occupation eraly. Were going to the races in Flemington Park and nned to change into our 'racing' clothes. We only stayed one night in the hotel but will be returning later in November.

Ok so, I needed a hotel that was close to Southern Cross Station - as I had an early morning flight and needed the easiest access to the station as possible. For this, my purpose was served. The hotel was generally clean, with a very cheap rate and you essentially get what you pay for - however based on other 3-4 star hotels, this one does not even compare. The rooms are really depressing which is interesting considering the lobby has a somewhat "premium" and the rooms have the same quality of backpackers lodgings The rating should be adjusted to 2 stars (and that's being generous)

great location but room was unbelievably small. Just holds 2 single beds and a bathroom where privacy is limited, wash basin small that brushing teeth makes a mess on the floor. definetely not value for money.

Convenience to public transport and friendly and accommodating staff are the best features of this boutique hotel. Right across the road from Southern Cross Railway Station, trams out the front and around the corner to all parts of Melbourne, walking distance to major attractions of Melbourne and shopping. Rooms compact and clean, bathrooms a bit squishy in standard rooms but a really nice hotel, quiet at night and nicely refurbished. We stay here a lot when going to shows and concerts in Melbourne.

There's not much to say about this place. It's cheap and clean. I was in Melbourne for a single meeting and booked at the last minute. I was on the ground floor, which was a novelty. Compact room. Scrupulously clean. I stayed in another hotel on the same street with a higher star rating and prices, and was severely attacked by bedbugs. Now, I strip the bed and check everywhere. This place was extremely well cleaned. Staff were very friendly - I spoke to them once at check-in and once at checkout. Easy. also, convenient for Sky Bus terminal.

Hubby and I chose Pensione for a city break to Melbourne. It is five minutes' walk from Southern Cross Station where we caught the SkyBus to and from the airport: very easy. Excellent location for walking all over the CBD as well as south of the river. Tram stop right out front. Quiet location. Our room was small, but we expected that, and it was very cute, newly renovated, clean and elegantly simple. Perfect if you don't need to hang out in your hotel room for hours and hours. Good customer service; we kept our bags there all day on our final day and it wasn't a problem. They also upgraded us to a newer room. Our only gripe is a strange one: they replaced our towels more often than necessary even though they aim to save water. I'd certainly recommend Pensione to others.
