Great hotel, lovely room, prime location, but took out double the deposit without my authorisation. Slow to refund. Only one thin blanket.

This is a stunning hotel in every way - clean, friendly, with all the business facilities you need, plus a great gym and pool. It is also perfectly located, in easy walking distance of the station, the theatres, shops and restaurants.

I have stayed in most of the business hotels in Sheffield and the Mecure is the best by some distance. Truly exceptional service and staff attention. Good location within the City centre in a new development.

The facilities here are very good; trendy champagne bar, big swimming pool, and range of free spa facilities such as steam room and sauna. Our only issue was being put in a room with a known heating problem, despite paying for the upgraded room type. We were quickly moved to a new room, and overall our experience was positive.

Fantastic weekend at a very nice hotel. Staff were exceptionaly good.

We had a very pleasant stay at the Mercier, other than a noisy party who don't understand hotel etiquette and respect for other guests, but the hotel were very quick to respond and it was dealt with promptly. The pool was great, food lovely and staff welcoming and helpful. I'd have no hesitation in booking there again.

The hotel was in perfect proximity of the train station, restaurants, bars and other local stores. Having a shower was not pleasurable either, as the temperature fluctuated from cold to hot, and the towels were almost 'rock-hard', which felt so harsh against the skin.

I had a really enjoyable stay here. From the moment I walked in, the service was excellent and the staff were very friendly. The room was very neat and warm, the view was nice. Nothing about the room was particularly outstanding or different, it was just another standard room; hence the lower overall rating. All in all though, I would stay here again.

A good hotel in a good location. Two big downsides; extortionate fees for WiFi (surely this should be free in all areas) and the cost of the breakfast is stupidly high (over £16)

I have a specific £90 budget for a hotel room from my company, which the Mercure fitted. I was surprised to find - only upon arriving - that there is NO car park! I was offered a £23 valet service to have my car-parked elsewhere, or £6.50 for an NCP car-park nearby. Not ideal. Otherwise, nice hotel rooms (although pay-only internet) and the gym is decent, although dumb-bells only go up to 20kg. A bench bar and some plates + a boxing bag too though; and plenty of cardio machines (yuk)

Had a quick overnight stay & everything went smoothly. My only objection is having to pay extra for internet access, which i feel is now a necessity not an optional extra at a hotel in this price range.

Love most things about this hotel. Location, service, food, atmosphere and room size all excellent. However two things leave me questioning whether to stay there again. The airconditioning in the room is difficult to control and I the temp throughout the night was 26 degrees. Too hot to sleep. Also the beds are uncomfortable and along with the bedding need to be replaced.

Top class hotel with excellent amenities and first class service

This is a very comfortable hotel in a great location in the centre of Sheffield. The bar is very pleasant with a good atmosphere.

I stayed here with my partner on NYE 2012. It's a great location and we received a free upgrade to a room over the peace gardens. Unfortunately, we were only given a twin and not a double (you must specify double upon booking) but the beds were pushed together so not really an issue. The room was lovely, very spacious and had mod cons (although not all worked!) Overall, I was happy with my stay.

My partner and I booked this hotel as it rated so highly by other reviewers, but I was very disappointed with the stay. First of all the website is difficult to navigate and so information about parking was unclear. We only found out on the day that valet was £23 or there was a subsidised rate for a nearby NCP. The hotel we'd stayed in previously in Sheffield had free on-site parking. Secondly, we decided to get a 'Privilege' room so that we could get wifi included. We got the code on check-in, only to find out that only one device could use it; we had 4 between us. There was also meant to be a Nespresso machine, alas instead there was an Argos Value kettle with matching iron that was completely useless. Housekeeping was very unpredictable; the first day they threw away the barely used soap and didn't replace it and also didn't provide a bath mat. The bed was also not up to scratch, it was meant to be a King size, but in fact it was two beds pushed together so if you tried to sleep anywhere in the middle it was pretty darned uncomfortable. Although the location was great, the hotel does not deserve the 4* it has and was way below average.

I have stayed at St Pauls many times since it was first opened a few years ago and the quality of all the rated points has remained a consistant high, however I wanted to use the WiFi connection for the first time and was astonished at the heavy cost levied by the hotel especially when WiFi is free across the square at Cafe Nero where the coffee is also cheaper so perhaps St Pauls need to reconsider their WiFi pricing stratagy for leisure guests.

Cannot speak too highly about the staff. the hotel facilities, price or location. Room was large, clean and well-appointed. However: one very big problem which coloured the whole experience: The bed is AWFUL. It is like trying to sleep on concrete. Did not sleep well, and had severe back pain next day. Other niggles: (1) temperature control of the shower was non-existent. It kept varying from comfortable to freezing; (2) price of breakfast is far too high for what is an ordinary self-service buffet - lots of people at our event went elsewhere next morning.

Even though we booked on Hotels.com a double room we received a twin room that was a disabled room. When we complained they said it was the last room left. My husband lay on the middle crack of the bed and did not sleep at all. At least if there was bedding over the single bed split he said he would've slept more comfortably. The breakfast was fairly good but the chef was not there for at least half an hour when we wanted to order some items from him. I asked for coffee and it did not arrive until after we had finished our breakfast and had left the restaurant.

First class, good gym and pool, great location in the heart of Sheffield.. Staff efficient, helpful and pleasant

Very good hotel in the centre of Sheffield. An earlier reviewer commented on expensive overnight parking - this wasn't our experience. Simply park at the NCP close to The Crucible theatre, and the hotel will validate the car parking token (overnight it's £6.50). This was the first time I'd driven in Sheffield city centre for a while - best to get the train!

The only issue I would have is with the car parking. The hotel fee was extortionate at £23, however the receptionist was very helpful and told us of another car park with reduced rate - this was just a short walk but with large bags not the best start. Everything else was fantastic

First of all I must say that I found ALL the staff to be extremely helpful and courteous with the exception of what I assume was the duty manager. The hotel room was not available for stated check in time of 1pm as it had still not been cleaned. We were eventually told our room was ready at 3:40pm. We were only in Sheffield for the night and had hoped to have a rest in our room prior to going out that evening. We had even asked for early check in when we first arrived at 11am. This was not possible, however, nor were we expecting the eventual time. We were given a complimentary glass of Pimms but all was let down by the rude manner of whom I can only assume was the duty manager querying me on the bill for a club sandwich that was delivered by room service. There had obviously been some miscommunication between him and another member of staff. This was later cleared up between the two, with my help, annoyed as I was. However, this was too late, I had already been spoken to in an unbefitting manner by a member of staff from the "service" industry and this could not be taken back !

This is a great hotel. It is new, fresh, modern and has everything you need in the best location possible in Sheffield. Whilst I sadly did not have time to use it, we took a look at the gym and pool - both looked great - very impressed. We worked from the hotel lobby on the Friday. Wifi was OK and it was great to look over the winter gardens with natural light flowing in. Service has an opportunity to improve a little. There were queues at the desk and on more than one occasion that staff seemed a bit flustered. That small glitch aside, the bar area is a must and they serve English sparkling wine. Highly recommended hotel.

Typical chain hotel. Room large but decor uninspiring and bed not very comfortable.No car park but reduced rates at local multi-storey within walking distance although gets expensive if you leave and come back on the same day. Good selection at breakfast and very friendly restaurant staff. Orange juice had settled out where it had been standing for a long time and floor in this area was sticky both days and hadn't been cleaned properl.Lovely to be able to sit with a view of the Winter Garden. Easy access to the main shopping and tourist area so the hotel was worth it for location .Breakfast expensive if not included but plenty of coffee shops in the area.

Overall a very pleasant stay in the centre of Sheffield. Ideal for pubs, clubs, and restaurants. Don't forget the shops! Excellent room, superb service, fantastic facilities, brilliant breakfast. Car parking no so good, ah well, like most city centre hotels for you.... Pricey. I would still highly recommend it.

Good location, no carpark. room very good apart from no openable windows - AC only- bid stuffy at times- good spa area / pool - service overall very good - - breakfast varied selection - would stay again

Great friendly service, lovely clean room with large windows and ensuite. However, the bed was slightly hard and had a central ridge in the mattress which felt a little like two single mattresses had been put together to create a King. Apart from that, there are great and clean spa facilities. The hotel adjoins the Winter Gardens and is very close to theatres, restaurants and shops.

Nice hotel in great posotion for shopping and resturants. No car park which was a pity but this did not spoli our stay.Good value and would return.

This is a fantastic hotel in the perfect location.Step out of the door into the centre of everything.Spotlessly clean and modern.The pool area however is in the basement and feels enclosed and somewhat bland and forgotten.It is in need of brightening up........Top tip.......Request a room which is not on the first floor !!!!.Certain rooms are above the kitchens and it gets noisy through the night with the extractor and kitchen noises.

Right in the heart of Sheffield city the only real issue is parking. The nearest NCP changes £24 for a day although thehotel scan your token and that drops to £6.50

Great location in the city centre for my overnight stay. Room excellent with all amentiites you would expect from this standard of hotel . On your door step are bars & restaurants within a few minutes walk and train station within 10 min walk. will definetly stay again .

Great location, friendly staff. Expensive parking and breakfast but excellent overall.

Overall, it's a good hotel with a very nice pool. The house keeping staff are very friendly and nice. However, the front desk ignored my request at night and when I asked again the next day, the receptionist simply said she didn't know who was taking my call the previous night. I have to say they were not so friendly at all, and showed their arrogancy in some way. I stayed in at least10 different hotels in Sheffield and never felt so bad and ignored.
