The Grand Hotel Amarath Amsterdam has incredible charm and character, yet they have provided the necessary updates for comfort. The entire staff is professional and happy to see to your every need. From placing last minute dinner reservations to simply providing directions, the concierge was pleasant and very helpful. I especially appreciated the valet parking! My room was quiet and comfortable, the bathroom large, up to date and CLEAN. The lobby bar is great for a late afternoon/evening cocktail. The hotel is well located to restaurants and sight seeing musts. I highly recommend this hotel.

This hotel is very nice but 5 mins+ walk to get the tram is not great. The room service food is not very good at all, very limited choice. It is also like a maze to find your room or exits but is full of character and very charming. I would for holidays and eat out but not for business trips.

I had a great 5-night stay at the Amrath. The property is very conveniently located. Not too close to walk with luggage from the Centraal Station but close enough for every day transportation needs. the room is comfortable and the bed exceptionally so. Make sure you reserve a room with a view otherwise they will give you one with huge windows but a view of a wall and other windows. The staff is competent all-around but some more friendly than others. The concierges are uniformly friendly. Housekeeping was spotty with them forgetting to empty the trash on 2 occasions and not cleaning the room until 9 hours later. The single room was a little tight. Very high ceilings but small crowded space where the desk, desk chair, closet meet. Breakfast is expensive and I tried it once but it is not worth the price. The spa and pool are nice. And if you haven't been to Amsterdam before be aware that even though you may have pre-paid your room in full, they will charge you a city tax per night at the end of your stay. Overall, a very nice comfortable and clean hotel to stay at in close proximity to the main train station. You can also walk to most areas of Amsterdam within 30 minutes. Expensive, but one of the few 5 star hotels to offer free internet in every room and free minibar which is really free.

We stayed 3 nights at the hotel 7th - 10th March for my husbands birthday. Staff at the hotel were very friendly and cases were carried to our room on arrival.We didnt eat at the hotel as we wanted to explore the area. The pool,sauna and jacuzi were lovely with plenty of fluffy white towels and nice clean shower and change area.The gymn was quite sparce but personally I wasny too bothered though others may be.Our room was not as big as I expected but well equipped and bed was lovely and comfy.Cleaned each day and plenty of toilettries provided.The mini bar was a lovely idea with a lovely selection and re stocked daily.My only little moan is that our room was quite dark and lighting was not adequate but everything else made up for this.It is a grand hotel in a great location,only a few mins from central Station and would defo return and Amsterdam is a truely lovely city and the people are so friendly and speak perfect English.

I booked hotel Amrath for my parents 55+ who came to visit me in Amsterdam. I was really looking forward to giving my parents this luxury visit. However, I would not rate Amrath as a 5 star hotel. The service during our stay was really rude, and the personnell was anything but eager to do anything extra. Also, the room was cleaned in small portions 3 times a day (first person filled the minibar, etc.) which caused a lot of problems. For example, once the cleaners left a carbage bag to my parents bed! Overall the hotel is stunning and in a very good location, but the poor service is not something you expect from a 5 star hotel. A dissappointed stay.

Our family of 4 stayed in 2 rooms for 5 days in March, 2012 at the Grand Amrath. Very pleased-grand room with 30 foot high ceiling, updated furnishings, beautiful bath. The bed was really comfortable and the shower was terrific. As noted in other reviews, the motorized drapes may spontaneously open in the middle of the night due to picking up remote signals from other rooms! Minibar is stocked every day and contents including wine, beer, soft drinks and snacks are free! Concierge and staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Only beefs- poor lighting in room, strange lack of face towels, and freezing cold bathroom floor. Also room was not ready at check in time- a problem when exhausted from overseas flight at night. Definitely would stay again.

Great hotel in the city center but in a quiet neighbourhood. Cleaning was good but still there where dust and spots here and there. Nice pool with sauna, bubblebath and an training room.

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights last week. Our room was upgraded free of charge to a junior suite which was fantastic, the free mini bar was a great bonus. The full breakfast buffet was good although expensive at 25 Euro each.They also do a continental breakfast at the bar for half the price which was very good. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and all spoke english. The pool was good and fairly quiet for an evening swim. The location is a short walk from centraal station and about 20 mins to DAM square and a lot of the tourist attractions.

Honestly, the place, the rooms, the staff, the service, and the amenities were just fantastic. It wasn't any one thing that made it so fantastic. It was the total package and it was because of the Amrath that my stay in Amsterdam was as good as it was.

Our third visit in a year, not that anybody noticed.Our electronic curtains opened/closed by themselves regularly waking us up all 3 days of our stay.We reported this after the first unwelcome wake up and were told they knew about the problem and were trying to fix it. No lie in for us all 3 days. Surely all rooms were not suffering this problem, maybe we should have kicked up to move! I was going to pass this on when leaving but not even asked if we enjoyed our stay. Filled in comments card, never heard from them. Returning guest lost, unnecessarily. Cheerio...

the hotel is located close the central station but it is not too loud like other hotels around that area.. I really enjoyed the free minibar

Great location and excellent service. Room was quite comfortable and quiet. Complimentary mini bar and wifi a real plus. Impressive spa, even though we didn't have time to use it. Did one breakfast, and the food was excellent. Would stay again.

This was a Beautiful well maintained hotel,with the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in as well as the nicest bathroom with modern tub and separate shower, room and bathroom were very clean Free mini bar was very generous as well as the free faxing and free internet. The only down side was it was quite hot in the room and you can regulate temperature by 3 degrees up or down which wasn't enough, they did however bring us a fan and that helped quite a bit. I also think because its Europe that is the norm, We are from the States and Love to sleep in the cold. We would definitely stay here again,It was the most Interesting hotel that we have ever stayed in.

The hotel is conveniently located very close to the Central Station and city commercial centers. Room facilities are luxurious, services are outstanding and staff is very tactful and helpful. However, the main entrance, lobby and corridors do not reflect all that.

It's an absolutely gorgeous hotel! Classy. Unique. Quality furnishings. Plush. Awesome. Problem is they have mice downstairs in the bar/restaurant area and they are very nonchalant about it. They don't seem to mind at all that the mice are scampering around the floor. They basically laughed about it. Americans don't like mice in their expensive 5***** hotels. Also several maintenance issues that only seemed to come to mind when guests complained. Said they fixed TV when they never looked at it. (We found that it was unplugged after they said they had repaired it!) Didn't care that they were unable to provide us with bar soap in our very expensive type of room. Double charged on an item.....said computer did it. Concierge staff outstanding in every way. Friendly, efficient, knowledgeable, smartly dressed, diligent.

Very helpful staff. The complimentary Wi-Fi and mini bar are a tremendous savings and convenience. Not the most luxurious but very comfortable and quiet. Good value and great location.

Great location - few minutes walk from central station, but not too close to the station. Easy access to trams and Metro. Free mini-bar was okay, but for the price should have included breakfast (if not the full buffet, at least the little breakfast in the bar). Poor lighting, quite dim when dark outdoors - even with every light on in the room. Room was very comfortable and large.

We stayed at the Hotel for four days from 15 Jul to 19 Jul. Very centrally located and within walking distance of the Central Station. It is an old building but the rooms have been refurnished and done up very elegantly and we had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay. The Hotel staff is curteous and helpful. The free use of the mini bar is a great offer. Would certainly recommend the Hotel to my friends.

The Grand is very close to Amsterdam Centraal, staff are very helpful and the hotel has the most comfortable beds EVER! Free mini bar once a day was a nice bonus. The shower did not have much pressure in it due to calcium deposits but the staff were more than happy to replace the shower head quickly, so don't hesitate to ask. Will be back here again when we save some more money. =)

My stay at the Grand Amrath was very nice. I enjoyed the room very much it was very large with a canal view and included minibar. Aswell the washroom was very modern and big. The Hotel lobby is quite small but is old and stylish. The Hotel is also located quite central and in walking distance to some attractions.

I have met a lot of really nice people here in Amsterdam, unfortunately they don’t work here. I chose Grand Hotel Amrath from the reviews I read on Hotels.com. I travel a lot and rely on these reviews. This is the first time I have ever been disappointed. This hotel should be 5 stars. The price, the location, the building, but I am sad to say I am only giving it 1 star. There were a lot of little problems that just lead to an aggravating stay. When addressing these issues, the staffs reaction was not helpful and in the most part rather rude. Without boring you with details, the final straw from me was the curtains in the rooms. They are all on remote controls. Anytime another room on your frequency opens or closes their curtains, yours does too. This happened at 1:45am, 5:30am, 6:00am and three more times before I finally got up. I asked the kid at the front desk about this problem, and he said this is the first he has ever heard of that issue and will send a workman up to look at it. I questioned him about his statement of never hearing of this problem, so thought it could just be a short in the controls. I stopped back in the office before leaving for the day to make sure that they follow up, and the manager said he would personally take care of this problem and explained the radio frequency issue. That is what I suspected in the first place and was a little ticked that the kid was lying. That evening it happened again several times. I decided to just deal with it for the final night of our stay. At check-out I told them how they could fix this problem by simply removing all the remotes and just using the buttons on the wall. They said they would pass it on, but I could tell I wasn’t the first to say that. Unfortunately, I booked my return stay here on a non refundable reservation. I did mention to the girl at check out that I will be back in a week, and she said let us know about your problems with your last stay and we will take good care of you. Let’s see if th

Excellent service and comfort. Almost everything, including museum tickets and taxi service to the airport, can be charged to your room. Very convenient to Central Station and the port for cruise ships, but some distance from the museums and major shops.

Historic/art deco beautifully detailed monolith - outstanding service/amenities. My shower head was the best hotel shower head I have ever experienced. Pool-jacuzzi-sauna was the best! Enjoy roomy luxury in the heart of amsterdam.

This hotel is really lovely, and our room (after we requested an upgrade) overlooked the canal. It is within walking distance of the Dam Square area. Chinatown and the Red Light District are almost directly behind the hotel. Actually, this worked out nicely. The Red Light District is really not at all seamy and is probably the safest area to walk through at night. We enjoyed simply walking around the hotel's neighborhood. So pretty, with all the canals. The hotel rooms themselves are different and fun. Ours had a large raised bathroom surrounded by glass, with frosted glass around the toilet area. It was a little stuffy or warm in our room as I believe they do not have airconditioning. The temperature in the room is controlled by the hotel.

This was our second stay in the Amrath, as we loved it so much the first time. When we checked in, we were told that we had been upgraded as we were celebrating my husband's birthday. Staff were super friendly, the bed is so comfortable and if I were lucky enough to go back to Amsterdam, I would stay there again.

Great location, wonderful staff expecially the concierge and check in staff. the only minor complaint is the lighting or lack of in the the rooms- they could use brighter bulbs. The free mini bar was well stocked and restocked each day. The hotel is old but the room has all the modern touches.

The Grand Amrath is a very nice place. We reserved a junior suite and got upgraded to a better one. It was very nice, but a little weird. The building was once a large office building for shipping companies buit around the turn of the century. The room had lots of dark wood, dark light fixtures, and carvings. It had a definite "Addams Family" feel to it, but not in a scary way. The bathroom was exquisite, and the free mini bar made it nice to hang out in the room. We could have wine before dinner and orange juice in the morning. They also put some snacks in the room. THe location is good--right near central station. For 7 euros, you can get an all-day pass to the city train system and go anywhere.

Beautiful room, fabulous high ceilings with windows that actually open for fresh air. Great views of a canal, and walking distance to everything. It's a good 15 minute walk to the Palace and Flower Market, half an hour to Anne Frank House. We didn't mind the walking. Rooms are clean, quiet, lots of drawers and cupboards for clothes. Free mini bar--who has a free mini bar these days!?!? Nice little perk. The bed was incredibly comfortable with really awesome night lights, and the best hotel pillows I've ever come across! We did not dine in any of the restaurants here, other than the main hotel bar. We had a quick lunch there, it was delicious with big portions. We also went to the hotel bar for a nightcap, and it's the first Spanish Coffee I've had in about 10 years where the drink was actually hot, and you get a little 'cookie' with it complimentary. Love the little extras. The front entrance/lobby is a bit austere, and I was thinking as I was waiting to check in, that the room may not be what I had in mind, but turned out better than expected. The check-in process is a little weird, in that they take only two guests at a time in their 'check-in room'. There's not a long desk with 4 or 5 front desk clerks, it's a room with just 2 reservation clerks and their 2 computers. But, they are friendly and attentive and check- in goes smoothly although you may have to wait a bit if a number of guests arrive at the same time. Keep this in mind if you're in a hurry to check out. Do not let this deter you though, as the end result-- the room-- is worth it. Close to Train Station yet a very quiet location. I read in other reviews to make sure to avoid the basement rooms. I did request no basement when booking and room 307 was a gem. I generally always have something to complain about, but I was very satisfied with this hotel :).

Interesting building - used to be the head office of a shipping company; the whole building inside is rather dark which is a shame, the room that we had (standard deluxe) was OK and clean but not enough wardrobe space if staying for more than just a few days, shower not powerful enough, air-con not working properly, water draining from sink when the plug was in, not really possible to see the tv from the bed and the remote control a bit moody. The service in the downstairs bar was not that good on one evening. On the positive side though, the room was warm and clean and a reasonable size, the bed was comfortable and there was a free mini-bar. Valet parking is good and necessary but cost €50 a day. The hotel is in a great position In summary, too many things not quite right for a 5* status but a good 4* hotel

Hotel staff very courteous and professional. Services are exceptionally good. As this is a premium hotel, it may be a bit more expensive. However, the quality of the services and the excellence of room amenities more than make up for the additional cost. I reoommend theis hotel without question.

The food and the service in the restaurant were terrible. I would not recommend this hotel at all... it is a very old and smells like old...

Fantastic hotel, close to everything. Recommend by-passing breakfast in dining room & opt for the bar-breakfast. In-room bar included in room price & includes a chocolate bar!! Yummy.

My best girlfriend and I are really picky so please keep this in mind while reading my review! The hotel is really nice; our room had really high ceilings and the room was large by European standards. The room and hotel was clean and able to go above and beyond for any requests, etc. We felt very safe in the hotel and the city as a whole. The hotel was within walking distance from the Central Train-station and was very convenient. The only thing I would have liked is if the hotel was more centrally located in Amsterdam; meaning closer to the center of the city. But we were able to ride bikes and get around very easily. The Turkish Bath at the bottom of the hotel was GREAT! I had not heard anything about it from reviews, etc. But what a great surprise. Pool, jacuzzi, wet and dry sauna. Very relaxing! I'd stay here again for sure!

This hotel is a 9.5/10. Only reason why I have a .5 mark off is due to a slight unpleasant odour (body odour) in the room. It was present when I arrived. Not too much of an issue though as I have encountered this in other hotels in Europe as well.

Great location, great service....clean and quite. Food was first class. If I go back to Amsterdam I would stay here again

We arrived early on a Saturday morning and expected to have to wait until check-in time before we can go to our room - not so. . . they had a room available within 30 minutes AND we got upgraded to a wonderful room. Everything was great - the bed, the room, the bathroom, the sheets and pillows were all very comfortable, what a great place to stay. The free minibar was also great - Honestly, I wouldn't change a thing with this hotel - close to the central station and easy to get to wherever you want to be in Amsterdam. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful - we only had breakfast at the restaurant, but it was quite good - a little on the expensive side, but you can eat 'till your hearts content. OH, and bring a bathing suit!! The indoor pool is beautiful - the spa also looks nice, but I didn't try it.

Great hotel with a tremendous and interesting history. Room s are neat and clean. Location is great next to Central Station and some great restaurants within walking distance. While not totally free, the minibar is exceptional. Internet was kinda funky (lots of numbers and characters) but free. A good value.

I love the location, the rooms, the old charm etc. They ruined the experience by trying to get additional funds from me after the stay (city tax). I have had this experience before, and both Expedia and Hotels.com have acknowledged that you should not pay additional fees after your stay.
