Second time I have stayed at the Churchill Hotel, this hotel is rated as 3 star, I would rate it closer to 4 star. Room comfortable and clean, staff very helpful, seems to be a popular hotel with weddings which is always a good sign, two weddings had taken place in the three days I was there but heard little to no noise in my room. Hotel has it's own free parking area which can be a problem with some hotels within the city walls. Very good location, around 5 mins walk to city wall & The Minster. The only very minor issue I have is the bar does not open until 5pm, I enjoy a beer or coffee in the afternoon, although there are other bars in the area. All in all I would recommend the hotel and intend to visit again.

Within walking distance to all sights. On site parking. Will be happy to go back.

This is the second time we have stayed at The Churchill in December.Once again everything really nice and all staff very helpful.We hope to be back next year.York is so nice at this time of year.You can park at the hotel after you have checked out which is a big help.

Extremely pleasent hotel, fantastic location, welcoming & pleasent staff, though room & bed very small. Don't think all are of same size, we coped for the 2 night stay but would probably have been more of an issue had we been there for longer - not much storage either. Maybe they consider'd we were only there for 2 nights when allocating rooms. However, still a lovely hotel & would reccommend.

Excellent location, very friendly staff, well worth staying there

We checked in to the hotel at 8pm and it was a smooth process. We had some food in their restuarant which the food was very good. Even though we had to wait about an hour for the first(main) course to arrive because they had a function on that evening in the other room. Our classic room was ok a little bit on the small side with the tv on the wall at the entry it's almost impossible to see the tv in bed. The mattress was absolutely rubbish, when you lie down it folds across the middle which appears to be broken and you can feel the sprungs pushing up. Shower head needs delimescalling. The breakfast was very good again. We feel the food was very good but the room do not match to the stardard of the room at all. Will go again for the food but definately NOT the room. I only had 3 hours sleep on the horrible mattress. Informed the receiptionist and only had a apology.

Beautiful location and convenient to all the sites. Everything in York is within walking distance. The room was very clean and comfortable as well. Enjoyed our visit.

We booked this Hotel because it met our needs for our visit to York at quite short notice for the time of year. It exceeded all our expectations,we cant believe how lucky we were. Cheers

The hotel is lovely, beautiful lobby. The room we stayed in was for two adults & two children. It was a nice size but the child was sleeping in a cot which was not very comfortable at all. The bathroom was huge, whomever designed it should of made the bathroom smaller so that the could put a full size sofa bed in the room. The lighting in the room is very dim and there's no internet except in the lobby where they have two desktop computers but only one of them worked and you needed a password from the receptionist to use it. Receptionist usually not at the desk. Overall it was clean and comfortable. It's about a ten minute walk to the center, the neighborhood seemed quite & safe but I don't know how comfortable I would be if I had to walk alone late at night. York is absolutely beautiful and charming and can easily be done in two nights. There's not much to see really but you'll get lost in it's charming streets. Stores close early and then there's not much to do except dinner and pubbing. Don't bother with the ghost tours they're horrible, a true tourist trap.

We stayed here for two nights. The hotel itself is very pretty, very contemporary. I have a back condition and can't lift my luggage. There are steps up to the front door and to the elevator so be prepared to lift your own luggage cause the hotel doesn't provide assistance. The room is a decent size; clean and the shower is very modern. The bed on the otherhand sinks right down to the springs. Unexpected, since everything else is up to date. The first day we came back from our outing and our room door was open. The cleaning person didn't shut it behind her. I also didn't expect something like this. Fortunately, we were in a corner room so not alot of foot traffic and nothing was taken. But it doesn't make it right. I complained to the front desk they just apologized but they couldn't really do anything since nothing happened. Also, the hotel is a decent distance away from the center of York but it is walkable.

I got a good deal for an overnight stay in this hotel for my birthday. Nice location great for sightseeing and the fact that it was in gardens off the main road meant traffic noise was of no issue. Room was tasteful, clean and comfortable-only quibble was that the shower was too hot and I couldn't seem to adjust the temperature despite my best efforts. Breakfast was pentiful and arrived at the room right on time. The blonde haired receptionist was a star who brought us coffee in the drawing room while we waited for our cab. All in all, a pleasant short stay.

Unfortunately I would not rate the Churchill very highly. The hotel was clean, well decorated and the staff were helpful, polite and considerate but everything was minimal. The double room was very small and, with our bags etc moving around was a bit tight. Also there was space for only one small chair so you either sat on the bed or the one chair. In short, not comfortable but probably appropriate for a 3* rating. Also I thought breakfast was unnecessarily minimal. The full English breakfast had a comprehensive list of ingredients but when it says mushrooms you expect more than one and the sausage was one small sausage, + one small half tomato etc. Either cook looked into the dining room and thought we should diet or the management were cost cutting in a most silly way.

Great friendly service. Tiny room but clean and well appointed, but uncomfortable small bed, and very noisy at night, from outside the room. Other doors very noisy when closed! Also as the hotel had a outside smoking area (nice touch), thought I'll buy a cigar, from the hotels small humidor. The staff had little knowledge about the cigars, also the prices where 2-3 times more expensive than central London. If you like a cigar, bring your own! Also the 'cigar bunker' has no cigar ash trays! Overall ok hotel, probably worth only staying if you have a superior room!

Beautiful hotel from the outside, updated modern furnishings on the inside. The room was nice--but not perfect. The tap in the bathroom was very loose and seemed about to fall off. The small tv screen was mounted on the wall in the far corner of the room from the bed. No big deal, but it might bother others a bit more. Free parking is nice. Free internet in the room (via an ethernet cable) was nice, but the cable the hotel supplied was only about 12" long which was a bit awkward. The best thing about the hotel is the close proximity to York center. It is about a 5 min walk to the Minster and other attractions. It is a beautiful building, clean and quiet. An exellent value.

Lovely hotel, lots of lovely features. Must recommend the early bird menu in the Piano bar restaurant. Only £16 per head for three courses and I couldn't fault it! Great location for exploring the city centre! Would definately go back!

We enjoyed York and our 2 night stay at this hotel despite arriving in December in subzero conditions that are probably going to be remembered as "the great UK freeze of 2010". Everything in the country was operating erratically but not so the Churchill hotel which was running just fine. Our bed was comfortable, nice bathroom, and the heat in our Marrakesh room was quite adequate. This is definitely an eclectic hotel with a few idiosyncracies but if you want to get away from bland and predictable chain hotel service and have a different experience with a bit of character, the Churchill delivers. The staff were very friendly and Dave on the front desk was incredibly informative in helping us decide what was sensible to see and do in the rather extreme winter conditions in York. He was an ex-staff member of the York Museum (well worth a visit) and an official guide to York so we could not have had better advice. The location of the hotel is excellent less than a mile from the railway station and about half that distance from the Minster and main attractions in the city centre. York has dozens of attractive pubs and restaurants (tip - try Betty's) so we did not have the opportunity to use the hotel's dining facilities apart from the buffet breakfast which was good.

I have stayed in this hotel twice: once for a "girlie weekend" and once with my husband and son. It's smart, clean and contemporary, with a great location which is a five to ten minute walk to the city centre. However it is in a very quiet location so you can enjoy a good night's sleep! During our second visit there was a wedding reception there and we didn't hear it at all from our room. There is also parking at the hotel which is worth having as the public car parks in York are very expensive and crowded. We didn't have breakfast at the hotel on either of our visits as it's rather expensive, and it's so easy to walk to the cafes in York. We did however have the "early bird menu" dinner at the hotel restaurant one evening, which was very good and good value if you don't order the cheese board!

I had a short break with my daughter in York. We stayed for two nights at the fabulous Churchill hotel. Its position could not be better - just a two minute walk to the centre and free car parking, which is a real bonus in York. Our room was beautiful; stylish and spotlessly clean. We will certainly be returning - I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough.

great location,very helpful staff would thoroughly recommend

This was a very nice little hotel. The price is quite affordable and it is very close to all the sights that York has to offer, you basically walk down the street and you have arrived at the Peter Gate. The breakfast there is very good, though not included with the room price. It's very cheap anyway (around 5 pounds) The rooms are extremely clean and well decorated, with comfortable sheets and mattresses. The hotel is in a very quiet neighborhood as well. The room contained exactly the number of beds listed in the reservation. We were a party of 4 so space was tight, but had the room been used for 2 people like it was intended it would have been quite roomy.

We had a lovely stay. The staff were very friendly and made time to chat to our children(our daughter was able to feed the fish, which she was delighted about!) Our room was a good size for our family's needs. The room was fresh and clean, the bathroom was spacious and the beds were comfortable. The breakfasts were lovely and service was good. Plenty of choice and, as vegetarians, we had plenty of choice both for cooked or uncooked breakfasts.

The Churchill is only a five minutes walk to York Minster and the other major sites of York. The rooms are beautiful, comfortable, and clean. Would highly recommend!

On arrival we were welcomed by friendly staff and we got upgraded to a luxury suite from a standard double room for no extra cost. The room was modern and clean with a very spacious en-suite. The only downside was that the bar, although new and brilliantly decorated, is rather on the small side and can get busy in the evening. It is superbly located and i would highly reccommend The Churchill Hotel.

Myself and my partner just spent 2 days in York staying over at The Churchill Hotel and can highly recommend it. The hotel is in a great location for a city break in York just being a 5 minutes walk from the Castle Walls which go all around the city center. We stayed in the Superior Room and whilst it was not the largest or cheapest I have ever stopped in you won't find anything that much cheaper so close to everything and with parking included. Only downside was that were working on the roof to the entrance and was a bit of smell of tar coming in the room, but as we were out all day it didn't affect us and we couldn't smell it at night. Highly Recommended

Good location. Easy taxi ride from the train station and just a short walk to historic sites, shopping and restaurants. The staff was friendly and helpful. We were only there for one night, but would have been comfortable with a longer stay. Our room was clean and had a modern bathroom.

Men, rommet jeg fikk var i minste laget. Fikk ikke plass til kofferten min på gulvet, måtte bruke skrivebordet. Rommet mitt var vendt ut mot parkeringen, og da var det selvfølgelig litt støy fra bilene. Betjeningen i resepsjonen var veldig hyggelige og behjelpelige.
