Hutong style hotel in the middle of a neighbourhood made up of narrow lanes, giving a taste of unmodernised China. Furnishings are basic but the character of the hotel is everything. Very charming and helpful hotel staff, who speak good English.

Let it be known that I didn't care for Beijing at all. But the Double Happiness Hotel is a charming little hotel in one of the city's hutongs. I was quite impressed with the hotel's cleanliness and attention to detail. And the hotel's service is impeccable. The free breakfast is fantastic! In short, this hotel really was a charming oasis in the city.

excellent small hotel in a hutong area. We stayed here for two nights with a small child in March, and enjoyed our stay a lot. Clean, comfortable and warm rooms. Good breakfast and very friendly staff who can speak English. Location is bit far in an alley but taxis are cheap in Beijing. Be sure to have the address in Chinese with you.

The name suits its quality of all round service provided to you. Exceptionally clean, friendly, wide selection of choice for breakfast. Close to shopping and it is in the heart of the hutong area with quaint eating places, speciallly one called Taste. You walk into an authentic Chinese atmosphere as you enter the hotel - you will have no regrets.

Great place for anyone looking for that kind of style. The traditional Chinese looking rooms, inner courtyards etc. Great service, English speaking, eager to help staffers. Only thing is it is hard to find and some taxi drivers won't even come in into tha alley. I guess a small price to pay if you're looking to stay at one of Beijing's famous hutongs.

This hotel is fantastic. The staff speak English, they go out of their way to be helpful, the rooms are spotlessly clean and I absolutely loved this hotel. It was authentic in construction but really modern inside. This hotel is an abslolute winner.

All the positive reviews are deserved. The place is even more beautiful than the online photos. All our tours were booked through the hotel, could not have asked for anything better. The alleyway where it's located is an amazing experience in itself. Make sure to visit the Small Cafe coffee house, where the owner makes an amazing cappuccino, and do not miss the tiny restaurant called Taste, the food there is pure glory.

Arrived at 2am -3 degrees, our cab driver dropped us off at the end of the Hutong (alley) and gestured to "walk walk", somewhat apprehensive with luggage in tow we walked down the Hutong to the hotel. On arrival at Double Happiness we were greeted by a friendly smile a warm room and cosy bed and thus began our stay in Beijing. The Hutong is busy busy during the day, very peaceful at night and you get the real sense of community, lots of great little resturants. The rooms are so warm and the bed so comfy - great haven after a day pounding Beijing pavement. Thanks to Susan who organised our Great Wall trip - excellent, all the staff were friendly and helpful, always interested to know what we had been doing and happy to make recommendations. Highly recommend to anyone who does not need to do 5 star and wants to sink into the Beijing culture. Thanks to all at Double Happiness.

THE hotel to stay at. Very authentic. Highly recomendable. Remember one thing though - have the adress in chinese letters!! otherwise Taxi-drivers have a hard time finding it, not all of them are good with maps - and almost no-one speeks english.

The hotel is located within local residence. Overall it is a good experience. I have spent 7 nights in this hotel during winter.

As previous reviews have said, the hardest point is getting from the airport to the hotel itself as the taxi drivers speak nor read English. We got dropped off in the wrong place and a passing Chinese gentleman who spoke English had to explain to a further taxi driver in Chinese where to take us. The taxi was very cheap from the airport however, only 50rmb (£5) for a 30 minute trip. The Hotel is 400 metres down one of the hutongs (alleys) but don't worry as there are no safety issues as the police station is on the same street! Once at he Hotel, the staff were very friendly and helpful and spoke reasonable English - their only error was later in the week when I requested tickets for an excursion to the Beijing Opera and they got me tickets to a childrens acrobatic show! One tip - exchange your English currency at the hotel not in the UK as they give a much better rate (9.0 rmb in the UK; 9.5 rmb at the hotel at the time). The hotel rooms were cosy and clean with nice bedding. The weather was very cold at the time (Jan) so the air conditioning was greatly appreciated. Not many English channels on the television but for some of the sports channels this did no always matter. For the Metro turn right outside the hotel, go to the end of the Hutong and turn left. Follow the road and you will see McDonalds, the Metro is to the left. It is very easy to use, get a map, and only 2 rmb (20p) for any journey! The signs on the metro are in both Chinese and English so easy to understand. You can use the Metro to any of the main tourist attractions (the Forbidden City, lama Temple, Tianamen square etc) apart from the Great Wall which is out of town - we booked an excursion to see the Wall through the hotel for 240 rmb (£24 approx). Lovely breakfasts and coffee at the Double Happiness Hotel but the restaurant is only small and everyone seemed to go around 9-9.30am so go beforehand if possible. When we first got to the hotel I was quite upset. It was in an alley, not conducive to walking around. Once the sun came up and I realized that I was in real life China, I was much happier. It was a five minute walk to the main street. Taxi's were easily available from the hotel desk, the subway was only about a 7 minute walk and once you got there it was an easy trip to any of the sights you would want to see. The rooms were were comfortable and quaint. Each room was set off a courtyard and was very much the old chinese architecture it promised to be. The rooms were decorated in period chinese decor. There was a small, homey restaurant bar in the hotel, with very firendly waitresses and bar tender. The reception staff could not have been nicer. If you are looking for a business hotel or a five star hotel this is not the place for you. If you want a cultural experience you could not do better.

Loved the ambience... the warm, homey feel of the decor... the complimentary bottle of champagne on Christmas Eve The young staff were friendly and helpful, and spoke English extremely well. We stayed twice...4 nights when we arrived in China, and 2 nights on our way out. It was great coming back at the end of our trip. They even upgraded us to a beautiful and larger room. It was a wonderful stay and I recommend it highly.

i had been staying in this hotel for 3 nights. it is a very nice place to stay. staffs are very friendly and helpful. hotel room is clean and breakfast is nice. the loaction is quite convenient.

We chose this hotel because we wanted to sample the atmosphere of the Hutongs and old Beijing rather than a modern multi-storey chain hotel. The Double Happiness Hotel was everything it promised to be: cosy, friendly, superbly located to sample that authentic Hutong atmosphere, quick walk to subway, helpful staff, clean and comfortable. Yes, the rooms are small and it may seem a little quirky, but that only adds to the atmosphere! We felt very comfortable here as a base to explore Beijing and I'd certainly recommend it.

My mother and I stayed for 5 nights in October and were utterly charmed by the hotel and staff. We were originally given an upstairs room that was small and a little dingy but most importantly, it was hard for my mother to climb the stairs. They switched us first thing in the a.m. to a lovely ground floor corner room on one of the courtyards. It was quiet, clean, and had excellent wifi access. Very nice bathroom. The breakfast is large and has many options. We ate the Chinese selections each a.m. and they were generally very good. Location was great for us because it was a regular neighborhood, not touristy at all. Great food stalls/restaurants in the alley, on the main street, and an excellent vegetarian place (Still Thoughts) a couple of blocks away. A couple of blocks to the subway but not far or hard to find at all. Most of all, the staff are so delightful. My mother lived in Beijing during the 1960s and wanted to track down her old apartment, office, etc... hard to do in a city that has changed so much! But the staff were endlessly eager to help and so kind. They really made our stay so special.

This captivating old hotel in a Beijing Hutong (alley) offers a unique way of experiencing old China -- but with all modern luxuries. The young staff of English-speaking employees repeatedly went the extra mile in helping us resolve travel, restaurant, and shopping quandaries. This is not the Hilton, but that's what makes it such a wonderful place to stay.

Great hotel located in the heart of Beijing near Dongsi Station. Staff were great, friendly and very helpful! Buffet breakfast offered good chinese and western style options. Staying in the heart of Beijing hutongs was a great experience! Sometimes a little difficult to find but otherwise, a great hotel experience - I couldn't recommend this hotel more!

Has all the chinese elements to make it a nostalgic place to stay. Location is a little hard to find but great for those who really want to experience living in a 'hutong'. Rooms are small! Try going for a suite if you have the budget. Staff are extremely friendly and rental of the bicycle makes up for the location, if you're into city cycling. Wonderful way to discover Beijing. Would go back, but definitely book a bigger room.

Arrived at the hotel and even though we were early we only had to wait 5 minutes for our room to be ready...with a complimentary drink... Reception staff were great and very friendly, and a fantastic resource for tips on where to eat and what to see and do. The rooms were beautiful, the courtyard stunning and a great place to catch up with fellow residents. We were only there a couple of days but I would recommend it to anyone and would go back again. As we left the hotel it felt like leaving family with the whole reception and bellboy staff there to wave us off.

We had the best ending for our Asian trip by staying at the Double Happiness Hotel in a Hutong! Everyone was so gracious! Our rooms were plenty large. They had upgraded us to a Family room and it was wonderful. We had a free internet in our room, in fact, all rooms had this. The courtyard was at our door and we enjoyed having family time there and planning our days. You had to almost make the Taxis take you to the door, but since, I was old and limping, I had no problems with this. The highlight of my Asian trip was getting up on the Great Wall. It is something that will always stay with me. We used Grayline tours for our pick up at the airport and the day tour to the wall. Jessica was wonderful. We think everyone should have this experience of staying in a hutong! We highly recommend Double Happiness. They seemed happy to let us out at 4 AM to meet the van to take us to the airport. Lovely people!

We wondered where we were headed as we negotiated the dusty hutong streets but were amazed as we entered this little oasis. The staff looked beautiful, spoke good English and were helpful. the first room we were shown smelt smokey so our hostess insisted we change. The rooms are packed with Chinese antiques but there is still space to have a computer in each unit and a minfridge concealed under the canopy bed. The courtyards are beautiful and a good place to share experiences with other guests. There were also rooftop decks. Breakfast was a mix of asian and western. We didn't try the bar or evening meals as there was plenty to choose from in the surrounding streets. We took their recommended tour to the Great Wall and while that was breathtaking, the tour itself ( guide and meal) were substandard. The highlight of the stay for me was using the hotel's 'no gear' bicycles to cover the ground in this sprawling city. We will definitely be recommending this hotel to our friends.

My family (2 adults + 2 teenagers) spent nearly a week at the Double Happiness in May 2011 and really enjoyed it. The hotung area, alleyway and hotel were so different to anything we've ever stayed in before and helped make our holiday in Beijing very special. The hotel is in a great location, only 10 minutes to the subway which is world class and very cheap. It is about 30 minutes walking distance to the Forbidden City and other main sights. The bedrooms have traditional furniture and open onto small courtyards - it's so peaceful and quiet to relax there after a hard day slogging up the Great Wall or the Forbidden City. The staff were real characters, they provided great service with a smile and sense of humour - they were very helpful advising us on local restaurants, ATMs, transport and writing addresses down in Manderin for cab drivers. The breakfast is fairly decent with a wide range of Western and Asian food. We had a fantastic holiday in Beijing and staying in Dong Chong and at the Double Happiness helped make it special.

We really enjoyed our stay at Double Happiness. Being in the hutong was fun, and very close to the subway. The beds were extremely comfy. Breakfasts were excellent. The atmosphere was very friendly with a lovely little courtyard. The rooms were lovely - red and gold satin, beautiful wood work. Recommend this place highly.

very nice traditional courtyard house made into a hotel, rooms are cozy and world class facilities. best part is the service. staff is warm and friendly and help you in every way they can. breakfast was good assortment of western and chinese platter. Only negative point i can say is in house restaurant has very limited choices.

This is a fabulous little hotel, albeit perhaps not well known. It is certainly a lovely surprise along an ordinary hutong lane. I had everything I needed and a friendly English speaking staff in a hotel with the ambience of old China. Beyond the hotel, in the tourist areas, watch out for scams by rickshaw drivers and invitations to tea service of any kind which will cost amounts beyond belief. Otherwise I felt quite safe and welcome. Organise airport transfers in advance.

The hotel is located in a narrow hutong (alleyway) in dongcheng district. It is about 1/4 mile from subway so it was convenient for us to go to nearby sites, Silk Market, Temple of Heaven, Tianamen Square and Forbidden City. There aren't too many restaurants nearby we can get to many by subway for only 2RMB. Rooms are beautifully decorated with Chinese art. We highly recommend hotel to anyone who wants nice accommodations away from the main street and crowded downtown hotels.

If you want to experience the real Beijing this hotel is the place to be - it is not a generic hotel which could be in any city of the world. This is the real experience of staying in a hutong over three hundred years old with all the small luxuries e.g. chocolates on pillows each afternoon, a new shower cap each day. The attention to detail is impressive as is the friendliness, charm and efficiency of the repection staff. A delightful, small hotel with more character than the multi-storied western style hotes located in the very sterile heart of the city. A beautiful experience from the moment we arrived to the moment we left the hotel in its quaint . narrow street.

This hotel is very quaint with a traditional chinese atmosphere to it and has beautiful courtyards. The breakfast buffet was fabulous. We were very comfortable and the staff were extremely welcoming, helpful and very very kind. The location of the hotel within the alleys of Beijing was just lovely and we enjoyed much walking in the area. The subway station was very close which made visiting other parts of the city easy. I would return to the Double Happiness Hotel if I were to go back to Beijing.

Located in one of Beijing's old alleys conveniently close to the centre, the Double Happiness hotel has stunningly beautiful courtyard rooms with all the facilities you could want. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. And excellent value.

I chose this hotel because I wanted to experience of being in China and it did not disappoint. Both the hotel and the alley it was in had amazing local character. Many small shops and excellent local restaurants. The room was small (virtually no room to hang clothes) and beautifully decorated. Breakfast was good. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The only problem was that I never could get hot water in the shower, so in that sense I'm glad I was there only two days.

I was looking for a hotel that would provide more of a cultural experience that the standard western hotel. I spent 4 nights here the end of November 2009. The desk staff all spoke English and were very helpful. The room was small, but beautifully decorated including a huge fan on the wall and bamboo covered walls. There was a large flat screen TV. I received all my wake-up calls (this hasn't always happened in the US). The mattress was very firm, but quite comfortable. A huge breakfast buffet was included, with lots of Chinese dishes, as well as some pastries, fruit, and a few western dishes. The mattress was very firm, but quite comfortable. There is also a lounge/bar. This hotel is an easy walk to the subway, which goes to many of the tourist sights. I loved my room at the Double Happiness Hotel.

A well located hotel,although the street it is on isn't that appealing to those not looking to see the real China. Very clean and well presented. Beds were comfortable but quite hard (Usual in this country evidently!). Breakfast buffet provided a real taste of China but also had toast etc! Staff were very helpful and wrote down the names of places in the chinese characters for us to show taxi drivers to enable us to get around. I'd stay again.

This hotel was amazing, it lived up to all my expectations and more! The atmosphere of the hotel in general and also the room were calm and serene, and very chinese. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, and spoke excellent english. The breakfast was a vast and varied mixture of western and chinese buffet. The courtyards were quiet and secluded. I was sad to leave and will definitely use this hotel next time I am in Beijing, and hope that will be soon!

The double happiness hotel is a beautiful courtyard hotel offering respite from the hustle and bustle of Beijing. My only complaint was that it was very difficult to find. It would be helpful if the site offered more detailed directions. My advice is to go to the webpage of the hotel and copy thier directions and phone number. Lost taxi drivers are quick to make calls when their limited English fails.

北京での初めての滞在でした。 ホテルは、地下鉄5号線の東四駅から、徒歩10分ぐらいと少し遠いのですが、大通りから路地に入り街の人々が暮らす下町の雰囲気の中を通り抜けるので、遠さを感じません。路地の途中には、交番もあり、安心です。 部屋は、中国風の中庭に面していて、内装の設え、洗面所のボウル（中国風の磁器）など、どっぷり中華な雰囲気に浸ることができます。部屋には無料で利用できるパソコンもありました。建物は古いので、新しいホテルのような気密性や防音などは期待できませんが、滞在中特に気になるようなことはありませんでした。 フロントのスタッフは若い女性ですが、みんな英語を話しますし、にこやか、おだやか、親切で、好感が持てました。 また、ホテルにレンタサイクル（使用料は無料、デポジットが必要）があり、北京の街を自転車で散策できます。 長城へのツアー３種類、夜のショーへのツアーも３種類、ホテルから手配してくれます。私は長城のツアー（有名な八達嶺ではなく、未修復の頂上を歩ける金山嶺というところ）に参加しました。 世界中どこへ行っても、ホテルは似たような感じですが、敢えて違う雰囲気を味わいたい人、どっぷり中国がいい人、胡同や四合院に住んでいるような雰囲気を味わいたい人に、おすすめのホテルです。

很特別的四合院.我住兩天.第一天給我的房間我很不滿意.跟我在網路上訂的有很大的出入.房間很普通位置又很偏遠.想在院子中納涼都還要走下樓梯.繞幾個彎.很小很小的房間.還不如不要加價定普通的房間即可.經過抗議.才知道當天客滿.隔天將我們換了家庭房.大很多的房間.出了門就是院子.方便在院子中休息聊聊天.唯一不滿意的是床上很多沙子.要自己拍乾淨.強烈懷疑沒換床單. 服務態度是很好的.這在中國是少見的! 我想這裡的賣點除了四合院的建築及中國裝飾.服務人員的優良態度是我推薦的!!!

ホテル周辺にお店がありいつでも買い物できるが、値段は高め。賑やかで夜遅くでも帰りやすい・・・ケド地下鉄から遠いので不便。歩いて15-20分。 日本語が話せる人は1人で、他の方は英語も微妙に通じない。 室内は最低限の綺麗さ☆暖房はよく効いている 床暖房！喫煙者は外での喫煙になるのが寒くて面倒でつらかった。 隣の出入りの音が結構聞こえたし、従業員の出入りもちょっとうるさかった

Hotellet svarte absolutt til forventningene. Det var et sjarmerende hotell med autentisk kinesisk interiør. Personalet var vennlige, behjelpelige og snakket godt engelsk! Jeg hadde ingenting å si på renhold eller service. Det var ikke spesiellt dyrt, og internett og frokost var inkludert. Frokosten var god og variert. Hotellet lå i umiddelbar nærhet av t-banen, og det var lett å ta seg derfra til de fleste severdigheter. Banken lå på vei til banen. Om man er ute etter luksus,er nok kanskje ikke dette hotellet et førstevalg. Men dersom en vil ha en smak av gamle Kina, grei komfort og ikke vil betale alt for mye, er dette courtyardhotellet midt i blinken. Jeg var i hvertfall storfornøyd.

酒店基本設備尚算o.k., 例如: 上網, 衛生間用品, 茶水等, 房間仿古造型都數配合四合院風格, 但未夠精緻及家俬擺設比較舊, 而且庭院環境空間不足夠, 未能令人置身於老北京四合院的感覺. 不過, 酒店員工服務質數很好, 主動, 熱諴, 笑容滿臉, 這是我最欣賞的地方.
