This is my second stay at the Jane, and I really like this hotel. It offers a unique experience of boat-cabin accommodation. Yes, the rooms are small, but they are well designed and space-maximized (for as long as you don't have too much luggage, you'll be more than fine). Washroom facilities are shared, but they are kept clean and are never busy. The staff is great -- helpful, friendly and polite. The location is a short distance from Greenwich Village (10-1 min. walk), a couple of blocks from High Line, and in close proximity (10 min. walk) from the metro. Overall, I would very much recommend the Jane NYC. Looking forward to staying there again

The location is excellent and the price is good - just know what you are getting into. The rooms are of course tiny, but well-laid-out so it wasn't a problem. What I hadn't thought of was that because the rooms are so small and your head is right next to the door, and also a few feet from your neighbors doors, you will hear everything going on in the hallway, all night long, all comings and goings and door openings and closings. Can make for a restless night if you're not a sound sleeper! On the other hand, everything very clean, bathrooms clean and surprisingly never had to wait.

Pro: - nice, leisurely neighborhood - cute decor inside hotel - nice restaurant connecting the hotel with organic manu choices Con: - My bed is trapezoid in shape. - The bed is also very short and narrow. Couldn't turn in bed. I'm 5 feet 3, my feet were hanging in the air at the edge of the bed. Granted this is a corner room next to the stair-well and they possibly have ran out of space. I'm not sure if that's the same for all the single bed rooms, worth double-checking with the hotel ahead of time. - Not hot running water in the morning when I tried to wash my face in the public bathroom. I couldn't leave this hotel fast enough, not to mention the bad hair I got from putting my head in the triangle end of the trapezoid shaped bed. Will not stay here again.

Accommodation in NY is expensive, so for the money, you don't really get a lot here. However, for NY, The Jane is a good option. I had a single cabin room and although it was too hot for my taste, it was otherwise functional and comfortable. The shared shower facilities were OK, but cleanliness relied on other occupants rather than any particularly regular attention during the day. Annoyingly, the shower/toilet areas had those very powerful hand driers which could be heard through the night if people opted to use them. I am a light sleeper, so just used ear plugs. The location is good and is a 5 minute walk to/from 14th St station on the ACE line. I found it a safe area to walk around day or night.

I just loved this hotel. Great deal if you are traveling alone. The neighborhood is awesome and so is the hotel itself. They have a great restaurant, very friendly/helpful staff and at night you can go the bar and grab some drinks. Couldn't be more convenient!

Oh if the walls could talk. This hotel has a story and a history. It felt like going back in time. The room was extremely small...smaller than I have ever seen. It felt like being in a train sleeper car or in the smallest cruise-ship cabin. Every thing was effecient and comfortable except for the mattress which could use a mattress pad. Loved the location and quiet neighborhood. Staff was fantastic.

First, let me say that I was charmed the moment I walked in the door...the decor was really interesting and, well, charming. The staff was really wonderful from start to finish...having stayed all over New York, I've yet to find such a winning combination as the Jane Hotel. Two things I would point out: First, when you get your room key the desk person will tell you to put part of the key ring in the hole next to the door in your room. Put the key fob in the hole and you'll have electricity in your room...take it out and the power goes out. This must save them big bucks and I think that is the "green"-est thing I've ever seen. Second, not to complain, but the rooms really are small. I'm just over six feet tall and could touch both sides of the room with my hands without even trying. SMALL! But, oddly cozy. Make a point of visiting the High Line park...it starts a few blocks away. Trust me, you'll love this hotel!

The design of this room was terrific, especially the coolly weird power stick. The smallness of the room did not detract from the comfort, and small amenities and a great rainfall showerhead in the shared bathrooms won me over for good.

From a single person to a couple - this has it all. Small rooms for the single traveler to to the couple - it's perfect. Wifi works, clean rooms, West Village, and a cool little 'organic' restaurant - go for it and enjoy.

Booked one night at the Jane, and was tremendously impressed with service. Hotel upgraded me from standard cabin (twin bed) to captain's room (king bed), which was AMAZING. Very chic, cool, and hip. Great decor, staff is really friendly and nice. Hotel was clean. I will definitely stay here again.

Actually stayed here because everything I was doing on this recent trip to NYC was in the West Village so I figured this would be an "easy commute." It was. The room is very akin to a sleeper on a train so be warned, but if you've read the description, you know what you're in for. The entire place was extremely clean esp. the room and the shared bathroom. I thought sharing a bathroom would be offputting, but every time I went (i drink a LOT of water so it was often!) there was never anybody else there. Granted the little rooms are small so i would think a stay longer than 2 days would be maddening but for me for a single night it was a good deal. I had trouble sleeping, but that was more about me than about the room so I honestly am not going to fault The Jane for that. My ONLY complaint is that it is VERY west, ie. on the West Side Hwy and the showers were a tad cramped: it was hard to hang up your rope, slippers, etc. in a spot where they wouldn't get some backsplash from the shower. I have no problem recommending The Jane and have already at least twice!

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here - this is exactly the type of hotel I'd like to see more of. Hostel Features: - Rooms are small, and (for lack of being like apartments) encourage dropping your bags and heading back out to explore the city - Communal restrooms, but with private stalls for all showers and toilets - Extremely inexpensive, particularly given the area Hotel Features: - Very clean. This is always the biggest problem with hostels, but the hotel (including communal bathrooms) is spotless. - Private rooms, including TV / cable - Prompt and helpful service - Extremely well-located - everything I came to see in NYC (and a few things I decided on the fly to see) was 15min or less walk away from the hotel. It's very efficient, and everything I'd want in a place to stay. I'll definitely be returning to The Jane next time I'm in Manhattan.

Great location. Very close to the Highline which was good to explore. Clean and comfortable if very small rooms. Bathrooms at the end of the hall were my only concern but worked out fine. Never waited for a shower. Housekeeping kept the bathrooms nice and clean at all times. Food in the cafe was very good. Saw other reviewers complain about noise from the bar but I never noticed it. For NYC the price could'n't be beat. For one or two people on a budget I think this is a great find.

It was fun staying at the Jane however the heating system ruined our nights . . . it was just too hot, even with the window wide open. Most staff were friendly and efficient, a few not.

The Jane is a lovely little place! The staff members are all polite, prompt, and helpful. The amenities are nice, too! There is a charming little cafe downstairs in the lobby, and room service is also available. And the rates are very reasonable, especially given the location (West Village/Chelsea). Definitely a place I'd recommend and/or return to!

Nice place especially for the money. Very small rooms but if you're in for an evening and don't mind a single bed - this is IT! Great location for the West Side and easy access to subway. If stayed numerous times - staff is great, nice restaurant on premise. I've never had an issue with the shared bathrooms (as I once thought) - I've only seen on a few occasion one other person in the spacious and clean bathrooms. RECOMMENDED.

We had a fantastic stay in a Captains Cabin here. It's right on the banks of the Hudson, which is great for running/walking with views of the Statue of Liberty in the distance. There are also plenty of restaurants/bars within easy walking distance, and subways nearby, so a great location. They do have a night club, so you need to choose your room carefully - ask for one away from the bar area and you'll be fine. We had a lovely stay, the room was absolutley lovely, and the staff courteous and responsive. After 4-5 trips to New York, this is the first hotel I would recommend, and it will be top of our list for any future trips.

Although the price is probably fair enough for New York, I would highly recommend picking another hotel if you plan on getting a good nights sleep, or if you are looking for somewhere close to a metro stop. The cabin rooms are as small as I expected, but a lot more uncomfortable and noisy. I had some sort of water pipe noise, very thin walls, constant banking of doors, hallway noise and springs sticking through mattress into my back. Didn't end up staying my intended 2nd night.

This is our favorite place to stay. The staff both at the front desk and in the cafe are great - gorgeous styling, clean,comfortable, and location can't be beat.

The Jane is clean and well-located, and the hotel would have gotten a significantly better review from me if not for the following. When you check in, the hotel puts a hold on your credit card for the total cost of the room, plus $50 a day, for incidentals. We didn't have a problem with this. When we checked out, we decided to pay the whole amount in cash, and assumed (reasonably, I think) that the hold would be lifted right away. Well, it's been FIVE days, and the hold is still there, meaning the credit card is almost maxed out. It's just been a pain, and a very unnecessary one at that. The Jane needs to correct this if it expects guests to come back.

Wonderfully located.. But... couldn't control temperature in the room . It was sooo hot I opened the window and finally put on the very loud airconditioner.... The mattress should've been replaced last year! Otherwise... very pleasant staff and it was what it was advertised as...

I spent one night there and it was fun. Everything was very clean and the staff was fun and courteous. Room was comfortable but I must say, the common bathrooms was a trip. Not bad at all, just showering in a stall next to a complete stranger was unique. I would go back if I was staying alone.

Location and cost were the motivating factors in choosing the Jane Hotel. Staff was helpful and questions were answered . The lodging is what it is and if you plan to stay there you need to be of a mindset for a very small , utilitarian room. This is not a home away from home but a clean room to sleep. Funky but clean. If shared bathroom is clean and showers and toilets are clean and private. But you do go there and may have to say hello to someone coming and going

I have stayed here several times now and continue to look forward to the cozy little room and nice restaurant. This place is high on style. The shared bathrooms are clean and have a neat design, and the included bathrobe and slippers make it very user friendly. The rooms are very small, but have excellent storage options. The neighborhood is fantastic.

The Jane is one of the more unusual hotel experiences I've ever had. You probably found the Jane the same way I did: it is a bargain. Imagine a vintage hotel that's well kept with a restaurant and bar that people line up for. But the rooms are cabins without a bathroom. If you can get over not having a private bathroom, having locking public showers and toilets in private rooms down the hall, the Jane is a great choice--especially for a single person.

The Pod Hotel used to be my go-to hotel for short trips to NYC; however, it has gotten very popular with youths (read: noisy), and pricey per sq ft. For others who have found this to be true, The Jane Hotel might be a good alternative, if you're willing to sacrifice the in-suite sink and still a few more sq ft. A bit more out-of-the-way, in the West Village, The Jane Hotel offers a touch of style and friendly service with a bit more peace and quiet. As others have mentioned, it's a location with a history, and the management has preserved some heart-warming nostalgic touches: the staff is immaculately dressed in "hospitality formal" (the doorman provided a grand welcome); the room keys are magnetized, while resembling old keys; robes and disposable slippers are provided. Water and toiletries are also provided. What they seem to understand is that a little touch here and there goes a long way. Supporting The Jane Hotel in a comfortable stay is the adjacent restaurant, Cafe Gitane; the hotel's close proximity to the High Line (a stroll through this new park is highly recommended); some rooms' gorgeous view of the Hudson; and of course, the West Village's boutiques and quality eateries. Of course, some aspects left much to be desired: If you're traveling by MTA and carrying heavy luggage, it is a bit of a hike from the nearest subway station; my quilted coverlet had a large discoloration (oil stain?) about half the size of my palm; my room was close enough to the bathroom that I could hear the loud Xlerator hand dryers (as loud as a vacuum cleaner); the television was loud, and watching it made me nervous of the noise I was causing (adjusting from volume level 1 to 2 = silent to louder than normal conversation); and the sink counters and floors were uncomfortably wet in the morning. A note to all the ladies: the co-ed bathrooms at the end of the hall provide complete privacy in the individual shower and toilet chambers, but you're still sharing a general sink area w

I'm a former NYC native and Village resident. I've been staying in other hotels in the same price range for some time when I visit or work in the city, and although I don't expect luxury I do expect a comfortable bed and enough room to put a small suitcase. The room is like a closet and was very uncomfortable. I love the West Village location but could not stay in a room like that again.

The hall had the most disgusting & weird smell that I cannot even describe. Shared bathroom MIGHT have been ok, if it was not coed!! Just strange to be brushing teeth and look up and a dude in his underwear is standing there!! My room was a stuffy sauna!! Very loud doors slamming at all hours. As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for: no washcloth, tissues......won't be going back : (

Awesome all around! Not your average hotel room - Compact - Clean - Charming and sweet! Right on the river. Great, quiet residential neighborhood with great shops and restaurtants an easy walk away.

I had a bad experience at the Jane. I stayed in the single cabin with shared bathroom. I was on the 5th floor and heard the music pumping from the club all night. I could not sleep at all. I called for ear plugs, they had none. I turned on the AC to combat the noise and frooze. The blankets are paper thin. I slept in my ski jacket. The next morning, functioning on NO sleep whatsoever and needing to go to meetings was miserable. I went to speak to the manager 3 times and he was in the next room "on the phone" and not available. The room was 50 sq ft, the itsy bitsy bed was as hard as nails & there was a shared bathroom. For about 75 more I could have stayed in a real hotel room. They advertise this as "trendy" since sailors used to stay there but I am not a sailor. Would not stay there again, sorry.

The Jane Hotel is absolutely fabulous, from its charming decor to its friendly staff, this hotel is a unique experience in a unique city. From backpackers to lipstick-and-curling-iron travellers like myself, anyone would feel comfortable and welcome at the Jane....

The Jane Hotel was everything I wanted from a New York City hotel. The location was perfect, two blocks away from the fantastic highline park and a short walk to Chelsea Market. Subway stations are only a few blocks away, but there is plenty to see within walking distance anyway. The hotel itself is on a quiet street away from passing traffic so there was no issue with noise. The room is small, yet so well designed you will hardly notice. Despite its size it was very comfortable, the limited space is used with great efficiency. The overall design looks like it jumped straight out of a Wes Anderson film. The shared bathrooms were vey clean and plenty. Never had to queue once to use them. I originally planned to stay two nights but ended up extending my say to four nights. The hotel staff are very friendly and professional, they have good knowledge of the city and will happily share it with you. I will recommend this hotel to anyone who asks. The Jane Hotel is testament to the fact that affordability doesn't have to mean compromising on quality.

Cutest hotel I've ever stated in in NYC and my room was so cosy and clean. I will stay there the next time u visit as I was so happy with the hotel and service. Fab!

I actually enjoyed the Jane. For the price you get a reasonable location in the West Village, and a rather unique atmosphere. The rooms are really, really, small. Did I mention the rooms are small? Any way, the only issue I had was that the mattress was pretty much non-existent. It felt more like linen covering plywood, but at the price and location, I really can't complain. The staff were nice, the facilities were very clean, and catching a taxi was hassle free.

Finally, an inexpensive NY hotel. Sure, you have to walk down the hall to the bathroom, and the rooms are the size of a small closet...but its affordable. Its near Greenwich Village, which is a bit of a walk from the theater district, but its my understanding that their are a couple of taxi's in NY. Its clean, and the staff is helpful. Can't beat it, just don't expect to be able to actually turn around in your room.

This is a place that you have to be sure is you. The super small cabin rooms and shared bath is not for everyone. But if you like the concept, it is a great location, good price, and fun spot for a recreational visit to Manhattan. Definitely not for business travel (although the free wi-fi worked well). Can be a bit noisy--but really a minor quibble. Great staff.

The Jane Hotel is a very affordable option to try if you want to stay somewhere in the West Village for a lower price with wonderful hospitality from everyone on staff, with a great location very close to the 14th st/8 ave ACE subway line, very safe and quiet neighborhood that offers great food choices with many delis, diners and restaurants. I loved that there were so many food options within the very close vicinity. This hotel also offers comfortable rooms, yes the rooms are that small but it makes you feel as if you are bunking on a ship. The beds are comfortable, the pillows are amazingly soft and the flat screen t.v. with dvd player plus the alarm clock with the ipod dock is a wonderful touch for this hotel. The shared bathroom thing is not for everybody and sometimes it can get rather hairy and can make you very impatient but i never had a problem grabbing a shower, and the shower shoes and bathrobe were a splendid added touch to this hotel. The showers were clean, the toilets were clean and I was in the bathroom while the housekeeper was cleaning the toilets and from what I saw, there is a very high standard of cleanliness from the staff at the Jane. Free bottled water in each room is another bonus. The bedbug thing concerned me as its NYC and I have heard that the Jane has had issues with this in the past, but as far as room 524 goes, not a single bug. Everything in the room was clean. I loved the fact that they had plenty of storage space with the drawers and hooks on the wall. I only stayed for one night though so I had hardly any luggage. If you stay longer, you may find the lack of hangers or closet space disappointing. The one and only complaint, and its a very minor one, is that the elevator isn't very fast. It's way faster to take the stairs if you are without a lot of luggage, and again, if you have more than I did, you may find that rather inconvenient. We had a wonderful stay and the hotel was close to subway, great restaurants, High Line Park. Neighborhood was very safe. Hotel was clean and comfortable... not a bed bug in sight on the 2nd floor. Note, there is a club/bar on the first floor and our room was directly over the bar... a bit noisy until 3 a.m., but after we told the front desk, they were able to get the music lowered. Would definitely stay there again!!

The Jane has the advantage of a great location in a beautiful neighborhood in the West village that is quiet and safe. Next to Hudson St Greenwich St and West 4th st that are abundant with great little restaurants, cafes, and stores. Also just a few blocks away from the 8th ave/14th st ACE stop. The service was great, all the employees were polite and respectful with a smile on their face at all times. The room was much smaller than expected, even after I went through all the available pics online. My only recommendation is the addition of some hangers - bring your own! Also, a room sink and some tissues would be awesome as the bathrooms use air dryers. Nevertheless, the room was clean, comfortable under the circumstances and provided a bottle of water every day. The bathrooms were reasonably clean and I pretty much never had a problem using the bathroom/shower throughout my stay.
