Macdonald Swan Hotel - كمبريا (مقاطعة)

Very dissappointed we previously stayed and had an excellent stay very upmarket experience, but this time found the room very poor - the outlook was awful over the car park and kitchen area, staff not aware of dishes on the menu when asked - dogs staying in nearby rooms crying and wimpering whilst owners were out, Fire doors in between area slamming all night what a great shame from the fantastic hotel it used to be - will not be staying again -sorry

Beautiful hotel in a great location. Food and service were excellent. Unfortunately the hotel is undergoing a major renovation. During the day, it was noisy, hallways stripped bare and being re-wired- workers everywhere. Couldn't get from the room to the front of the hotel ( bar, dining rooms, reception) without going outside and coming back in through another door. We should have been told before being allowed to book this hotel. Very disappointing!

Fair enough we booked late on but the room was over the air vent to the kitchen and although this turned offat 11pm we could not sit in the room.The bathroom was cold and uninviting-water was cold. Meals were good but they ran out of sausages for breakfast.Too many pets allowed .Overall wish I had stayed in my own home

My wife and I stayed at the Swan for three days of walking/hiking in the Grasmere area. We were a bit concerned by previous reviews noting that the hotel was a bit run down but we needn't have been. The hotel has undergone some refurbishment (as noted by the manager in replying to the reviews) and all is quite nice and invitingly comfortable. Our standard room was spacious, well maintained and had a magnificent, unobstructed view of Helvellyn Massif and Helm Crag (northwest facing) - one advantage of not being in the center of Grasmere (which is still just a short walk down the road, however). Our bed was superbly comfortable and the period decor fit the setting nicely. The staff were very helpful with all our inquiries and all were extremely friendly, including the house cleaning staff. We did not take any meals in the hotel, however, as we like to try different places. One restaurant in Grasmere that we recommend highly is Potted Out: delicious Mackerel pate and rabbit casserole. For some challenging but not killer hikes (we are 60 and 55 years old but fit and hike often) of 5-6 hours each including stops for lunch we recommend, 1) Fairfield, which goes out directly behind the Swan and ends back there as well, even if you descend via Rydal Fell by making a traverse back past Alcock Tarn, and 2) Sergeant Man via Silver Howe and Blea Rigg between Sickle Tarn and Easedale Tarn, with a return directly down past the latter. Incredible views from the summits of both.

The staff Richard and Andrew were really kind and helpful. The ladies on reception were also really welcoming and hospitable. The room we stayed in. No 4 is need of decor, Huge watermark on the wall. We were also faced with a jammed open door to the laundry stores adjacent to our room, bizarre. Seems to be the store for cleaning materials too. The Dinner was delicious we ate in the restaurant two nights running. We noticed that there was an element of mis selling with this venue as the images associated with this McDonald Swan in Grasmere, are related to the sister hotel, a larger more elegant place. McDonald Old England in Bowness equipped with spa facilities and a pool and lakeside views. So this was disappointing as we chose it based on those features and obviously on our attempts to use these facilities were were invited to contact the hotel in Bowness which is 12 miles away!!! Shocking!

Our 2nd visit that was as good as last time. Stepping out the front door on abeautiful sunny spring day was just a joy. Service on the whole was of a good standard although there was some delay in taking the orders for breakfast on Day 1. Food was good we ate in the Bar & whilst a limited choice it proved to adequate for our purposes. Spacious room with good facities, use of the shower was average and perhaps the tv could have been wall mounted. To be recommended.
