This is a funky place. The driveway in makes you feel like you made a wrong turn, but the actual buildings are nice, well groomed, and well maintained. As for not driving past the driveway, look for the tiny, tiny old church across the street. There's a little beach literally _right there_, with a small sand area, a very protected swim area for the kids, restrooms, foot shower, picnic tables, etc. Surfer somehow get through the rocks on one side and make it out to waves. Owners/operators are extremely good and detailed with instructions. CVS and misc. restaurants are about a mile in one direction. Touristy stuff is about four miles in the other direction. One odd thing, for me. The bed is like three feet off the ground. If you're under five feet tall, you will honestly have trouble getting into the bed. A step stool would be nice. This is a great sunset beach.

Very comfortable and quiet. Loved the location far from the hectic Ali’s drive and close to Kahalu’u beach.

Rude, owner or manager who stays on property

No complaints….but owner I think lives upstairs and one morning rolls his garage door open @ 6:30 am which is under the Orchid Room and it makes loud noises. So it scared the hell out of us, which we were sleeping. And he has no personality, we said good morning a couple of times he didn’t respond. On our last day, he’s walking back from his beach walk and didn’t even say THANK you or an Aloha! Rude man!

Big Island Retreat is a lovely smaller property right across from the beach and is walking distance to several restaurants. We stayed in the Pineapple Room, and it was such a nice place to go back to after exploring the island. We bumped into Karen, the property manager, who was friendly and offered us sight-seeing tips. We appreciated the beach towels and communal beach umbrellas that were provided. There were also Netflix accounts logged into the TV, which was a nice surprise. Every morning around 6 AM we woke up to a symphony of birds chirping and other nature sounds. My husband and I are early risers and thought it was a fun experience, so we didn’t mind. Others may want to consider ear plugs.

Lovely room with a comfortable bed and a view of the sunset over the ocean. Balcony was great for viewing the sunset. No AC, but not needed either. Fan and open windows was very pleasant. Loved hearing the waves as I fell asleep. Very close to great snorkeling (just across the street). Also, they have boogie boards, umbrellas and beach chairs to use for the day (1st come basis) which is a super bonus. We highly recommend the Oceanview room.

The fridge was leaking when I arrived. It was hot and located directly next to the parking lot. The bathroom was adjacent. But no towels in the room. Had to use paper towels to mop up the spill. And no Kleenex in the room. All of this for beaucoup bucks. At least the sunset was worth it.

The property was very difficult to find after dark. Only one small sign from the main road, then you had to follow a dirt road past a few other homes, with no indication you were in the right spot. We actually turned around because we weren't sure it was the right spot. After finding no other roads, we followed the road around a corner, then another corner, then finally got a brief view of the property to let us know we were on the right path. Key was left in the room as instructed. We never actually saw any employees of the property. I Was very disappointed to discover no vanity in the bathroom, only toilet and shower. Washing hands in kitchen after using restroom is awkward, not to mention unsanitary if someone is handling food in the same moment. The light above the sink was not bright enough for primping. The first 2 mornings there were issues with the hot water, and we had to take cold showers...the 3rd morning water was warm, but not hot. After they had the solar repairman out, water issues seemed to be fixed. Rooms are cute and eclectic, the small kitchen is helpful. We had a total of 4 rooms booked for our group, and 2 rooms had hot water issues, and no vanity in the bathroom, and one party actually had to go outside their room and across the hall for a bathroom! While the bedroom and site photos are accurate, I feel the bathroom situations should have been disclosed. Rooms were cool and quiet, with sounds of the beach.
