An oasis in the middle of Old Delhi

This is a wonderful hotel with an interesting history. We would never have stumbled upon it by chance however as it is deeply buried within the maze of alleyways within Shahjahanabad. Make sure you have a good local driver to take you the hotel. They will have to drop you a few minutes walk away and phone the hotel for you for the porter to come and collect your luggage. It certainly is an experience! Being in the centre of the old city you can easily walk around the maze of shopping alleys, visiting the spice markets, temples including JAMA Masjid and Red Fort.

Cultural oasis in Old Delhi

This hotel is one of “the” places to stay if you are looking for a traditional, old world experience. The surrounding neighborhood may come as a shock to those unaccustomed—it is in the heart of Old Delhi, near Red Fort. A porter walks your bags from the taxi drop off via a narrow alley to the hotel entrance, (3-4 min). The hotel itself is beautifully restored, with historic architecture, ornate detailing, and an airy, well lit restaurant and rooftop. They even have regularly scheduled performances, although we did not experience these. For culturally curious folk, it is a wonderful oasis in the heart of Old Delhi. The hotel itself is great, though those skittish about Old Delhi conditions/culture may feel more comfortable in New Delhi.

The reason i have said the stay was disappointing is because they need to decide whether they are a 5* hotel or popular restaurant. We stayed for 3 nights at the end of a 2 week holiday but on 2 of those nights there were large groups in the restaurant that did not leave until nearly midnight. Because of the layout of the Haveli the noise was dreadful and it was impossible to sleep. So, despite the elegance of the place and great service we ended up regretting spending so much to stay. We spurlged for the suite and it’s right over the kitchen. It sounds like your in the kitchen. So your up till 11:30 and awake at 6:30 whether you like it or not. Pillow like old cotton balls. WiFi barely works. Was really looking forward to staying here now I just want to leave.
