We stayed in the 4 bed dorm room with attached bathroom and toilet, which is really nice to have. The room however, gets quite cramp when there’re 4 bags in it, and there isn’t enough table space for things. Nevertheless, we like the tidy grounds and quality food at the restaurant.

We were at a round island swim event. Rooms clean & comfortable, staff friendly. The food and coffee was pretty good. We hired a private boat & had a great snorkelling trip. I’d stay again.

Oasis in the sea

The Perhentian islands are an oasis in the sea about a 30 to 45 minute high speed boat ride from Besut off the north east coast of Malaysia. Well worth the effort to get there because it is truly a little paradise. Beautiful sand and seawater that is as blue and green and fresh and salty as you would expect of heaven. It’s not for everyone, those with a wanderlust and experienced travellers will definitely be rewarded. The Barat Resort itself is basic but very functional and well managed.

The Barat @ Perhentian

The dorm room had thin walls, so you can hear the rooms beside you. The shower was just about acceptable. We left our luggage in the locker, however this was not locked and controlled hence anyone can enter at will. However a convenient stay for accessing coral view beach, a very good snorkelling site.

Best location, best service

I've been to other hotels in the Island and definitely the Barat is the best one: - Best location in the Island. Walking distance to several beaches and restaurants. Kayak and taxi boats always available next to the hotel - Small but clean room with AC and fan - Great service, the front desk girls are really nice and always trying to help - Free beach towels - The food in the restaurant is really good. Great breakfast options! (You can use credit card)

The BBQ is okay. The rooms are not clean. The septic tank is right in front of the aircon, it smell very bad in the room so. Unbearable. Ants everywhere even in the fridge. The floor looks soft and rotten somewhere..

superb except for dying seas...

I cannot fault the attitude of the staff nor the service levels at Barat. My concern is how much coral has died and sea life has disappeared in recent years. What to do?

We had the dorm room for 4 persons. We were extremely happy with the condition of the room. It was extremely clean. Towels, comfortable linen and water were provided and replaced/cleaned every day. Aircon works well. We had private toilets but were located outside the room. The cleanliness of the toilets could be improved. The staff were very helpful and quick to solve the issues we had with the safe. However, for the price we paid, we are satisfied with our stay overall. The atmosphere of the resort is pretty quiet at night. If you are looking for some nightlife (fireshow, cheaper food etc), I suggest staying on Long Beach. Otherwise, it is 10RM per way for a water taxi to long beach, and the price doubles at night. Food around Barat were more expensive than the small island. There are no nice sandy beaches within walking distance from Barat, which was quite disappointing.

Rooms and bathroom were good. No beach to swim. All the hotels/resorts on the Perhentian Islands are constantly burning their waste, including fresh cut grass and leaves. Wherever you go, you're in the smoke. Someone needs to teach them about composting and nature preservation. There is plastic waste everywhere.
