Cozy but without restaurant and not so modern

Cosy room that was classified as a overwater villa, but rather was a beach bungalow with private beach access. The main advantage is the lovely nature and unusual design that is created by the owner. She is very friendly and helpful, even if she is not up to date about what’s available on this small island. Asked for a memory card and she didn’t know exactly where to get it. The bed in the room is lovely, and we are very picky with beds. Lovely outdoor space with our own terrace and private beach. The main disadvantage is that there is no restaurant on the hotel. That made us walk for 2-3 hours before finding lunch the first day. You have to pre book breakfast 6 pm the day before and pay for it- and they will order from some local place. Very nice breakfast though but no eggs is the main disadvantage. You need a car or scooter here, definitely. Another annoying feature is the toilet, which is in another room, so you have to go out and that is not so nice in the middle of the night - considering potential insects and land crabs. Many nice places around and decent Wi-Fi which was appreciated.

A pretty little hotel on the sea, Fenua Mata i’oa has all the potential to be a vibrant, joyful place to stay on Moorea. It really is an oasis of beauty with gardens and flowers surrounding the rooms and an ambience of tranquility. Sadly, Moorea and this hotel were not at all prepared to reopen once the restrictions on tourism to French Polynesia were lifted in May 1, 2021. Lunch and dinner were not offered, and the place was just dead with very few services or staff available and the hotel was not really refreshed when I was there. The manager tried to be helpful when I voiced concerns about no food and other issues, but I found the place to be quite depressing. Had I known that this hotel and Moorea overall were not ready for tourists despite reopening, I would not have gone there. I’m sure when Moorea finally decides to start accommodating tourists and guests, the island and this hotel will come alive again. It needs to be refreshed and cleaned up more. Also, I love animals but not every one likes cats. There are very affectionate cats at the hotel who will come into your rooms and lounge. That’s fine with me and the hotel is a sanctuary for them. But if you don’t like cat hair and the smell, this may not be the hotel for you. Anyway, it’s a beautiful place but needs some life breathed back into it. Hopefully as more tourists start to visit again, the Fenua Mata i’oa will resume some semblance of “normalcy” and joy. When I was there, it was far from both.

Gorgeous Clean Delightful

Incredibly clean. Awesome personnel. Tasteful, artistic design. Fresh floral arrangement in the room. Incredible gardens; a paradise for plant lovers. There’s no beach per se but wonderful deck with steps straight into the water. 5 minute walk to a mini market That sells cheese, bread, wine and other essentials.

Quirky but very enjoyable

Decor falls somewhere between Italian curio shop and crazy cat lady's home. Also there are at least four cats. The location right on the water is fantastic and abundant vegetation provides a little extra privacy for the rooms when you want to sit outside. Didn't like that we had to pay extra to use the kayaks and SUPs on the property where most hotels will provide free of charge.

The property was next to the shore. Water was clear and you could see tropical fishes swimming. Each guest got a welcome drink when we arrived and a shell necklace when we checked out. The entire hotel was small, but we felt like we entered into a jungle. There were good size crabs roaming on the dirt (parking) lot next to the hotel. The room decor was a little out-dated, the sheets had stain. Bathroom was nice, but there was no hot water (only luke warm). Would we recommend it? Not for the price we paid. We would recommend if it was 25% less.

Tropical paradise

We stayed for 6 nights. Hotel has only 5 guest rooms and all are close to a beautiful lagoon. It’s surrounded by lush tropical foliage and the owner has lovingly decorated with plants, flowers, satins, art, sculpture, and the result is unique. It’s Paris in the Belle Époque period set in Tahiti. It’s the ultimate antidote for travelers who are tired of chain hotels. The bed was huge, the shower large and hot, and a small private patio comes with each room. Only downside for us is there is a long walk or short drive to restaurants. On site there is food available but quite expensive. Overall, highly recommended.

Phenomenal experience. Eileen is a terrific hostess. The setting is pristine. The “on water” bungalow was amazing- we had an indoor garden between the bedroom and the bathroom. A unique experience.
